Following the signing of Robert Lewandowski, Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s Chicago Fire have reportedly sold Major League Soccer (MLS) top scorer Hugo Cuypers to CF Monterrey.

The Belgian’s move comes as a surprise to many associated with the Fire after the striker was tipped to partner Robert Lewandowski in a star-studded attack.

Cuypers enjoyed a stellar goal-scoring season with Chicago and entered the World Cup break as the leading scorer in the MLS with 13 goals in 11 games, according to MLSSoccer.

Implications for Chicago Fire

According to Men in Red 97, sources revealed that the striker has been sold in the wake of Lewandowski’s switch.

The transfer opens up a new Designated Player (DP) spot on the roster, as Cuypers was one of three to hold that role, as well as a new international slot.

The 29-year-old’s exit paves the way for the club to continue its reported pursuit of Lewandowski’s former Bayern Munich teammate, Leon Goretzka, who remains linked with a move to Chicago.

The move also poses a risk as it leaves Chicago Fire without any depth in attack. Lewandowski will be their main scoring threat for the remainder of the season, but the only backups include 23-year-old Jason Shokalook and 20-year-old Dean Boltz, who has not played this season.
