Most actors arrive in Hollywood with nothing but a headshot<\/a> and a tolerance for instant noodles. Eva Longoria arrived with one rule: her dreams<\/a> would not come at the expense of her bank account.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

Before she became a multimillionaire TV star, sipping ros\u00e9 on Wisteria Lane as Desperate Housewives\u2019 Gabrielle Solis, Longoria refused to rough it up like other actors, waiting on tables between auditions and crashing on a roommate\u2019s couch. Instead, she was building a headhunting empire from her soap opera dressing room.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first day I landed in LA, I got a job,\u201d Longoria exclusively tells Fortune<\/em>. \u201cI was like, I\u2019m not going to be a struggling actor<\/em>. I\u2019m going to figure this out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Figure it out, she did. The 51-year-old star\u2014who now has a net worth north of $80 million,<\/a> a production company, a directing career, a stake in women\u2019s soccer team Angel City FC, a $6 million investment in the John Wick<\/em> franchise<\/a>, and a new mentoring partnership with Lenovo to support small business owners\u2014landed a role at a temp agency as a headhunter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And even once she\u2019d scored her first real acting role on The Young and the Restless<\/em>, she kept going. She was still negotiating salaries, screening candidates, and closing placement deals in between takes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my dressing room, I was doing the headhunting,\u201d Longoria recalls. \u201cI was negotiating 401(k)s and salaries and interviewing and reading resumes and placing people. And then they would be like, \u2018Eva, ready on set.\u2019\u201d She\u2019d hang up mid-call, go act, come back, and pick up exactly where she left off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite regular screen time, acting paid less than headhunting, so she didn\u2019t quit\u2014she kept up that double life for years, even denying it was her when clients eventually recognised her soap character on screen. She only walked away from corporate life in her third year on the show, after a pay bump finally made acting financially viable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I could always go back to corporate America if acting didn\u2019t work out,\u201d she says. Shortly after, she landed Desperate Housewives<\/em>\u2014and the rest is television history.<\/p>\n

Eva Longoria\u2019s former boss begged her to stay in corporate America<\/h2>\n

Longoria has never had to look far for her work ethic. The youngest in a female-dominated household\u2014\u201cnine aunts, three sisters, no brothers\u201d\u2014she grew up surrounded by financially independent women.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a teenager in Texas, Longoria started working at Wendy\u2019s for $3.35 an hour and hustled her way up from \u201cfried girl to hamburger girl to the drive-through, to head cashier to assistant manager\u201d from the ages of 14 to 18\u2014juggling her part-time job with high school.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m going to do this, I\u2019m going to do it well,\u201d she remembers thinking. \u201cI would work overtime. I work weekends. I was like, \u2018pick me, pick me. I\u2019ll do it.\u2019 I love the idea of earning money.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same energy followed her to Los Angeles. When she joined the temp agency, the CEO gave her a choice: steady base salary or unlimited commission. \u201cI didn\u2019t know either of those words,\u201d she recalls. \u201cHe goes, \u2018Well, base salary means you only make this much, but commission means you can make as much as you want.\u2019 And I said, \u2018That one. I want that one.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Within one month, she says she was making three times the base salary.<\/p>\n

In fact, Longoria got so good at her job that her boss tried to renegotiate her commission structure because it \u201cwasn\u2019t built for the volume\u201d she was producing\u2014and when she eventually told him she was leaving for acting, he even tried to talk her out of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe never understood why I didn\u2019t stay in corporate America,\u201d she says. \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t my calling, but I was really great at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody was surprised because I built this small business within his business, and he kept saying, \u2018Why would you want to be an actress? You\u2019re so good at business, it\u2019s a one in a million chance you\u2019re going to be successful at acting\u2019. And I said, I know\u2014and I\u2019m the one in a million.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Eva Longoria\u2019s advice to Gen Z: \u2018Figure it out\u2019<\/h2>\n

Her mother, for what it\u2019s worth, wasn\u2019t worried when Longoria said she was pursuing a career in acting. Her response was characteristically pragmatic: \u201cYou have your degree, so if you need a job, you can get a job\u2026 my mom always said that you better figure that out.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she says it\u2019s that mantra that separates the one-in-a-million<\/a> who make it in a creative industry from the thousands who don\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Longoria, for example, didn\u2019t wait for an agent to discover her\u2014she went directly to them. \u201cI looked up who the gatekeepers are, who hold the keys to these opportunities, and then figured out when they were speaking at an event. And I would go to the event, give them my headshot, or introduce myself.\u201d That, she says, is how she landed her breakout role on The Young and the Restless.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Longoria is refreshingly clear-eyed about the fact that Hollywood, unlike business, doesn\u2019t reward effort with predictable returns. \u201cYou could do exactly what I did and not have the same outcome,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But she also thinks a particular kind of resourcefulness is non-negotiable\u2014and increasingly rare. \u201cA lot of people prevent progress because of perfection,\u201d she says. \u201c\u2018I don\u2019t exactly know how to do that, so I\u2019m not going to do that\u2019\u2014that thought process, to me, is crazy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
