San Diego Today

Ty France, a former All-Star and Gold Glove winner, has signed a minor-league contract to return to the San Diego Padres for the 2026 season. France’s career has been marked by trades and free agency moves, but his homecoming to the team that drafted him in 2015 holds special significance as he looks to solidify his role on the roster.

Why it matters

France’s return to the Padres represents more than just a roster move – it’s a story of resilience, adaptability, and the enduring pull of where a player’s career began. In an era where loyalty to a single team is increasingly rare, France’s journey reflects the modern MLB player’s experience, raising deeper questions about the business side of the sport.

The details

After being drafted by the Padres in 2015, France has since been traded to the Mariners, Reds, Twins, and Blue Jays, while also making a World Series appearance. Despite his success, including an All-Star nod in 2022 and a Gold Glove in 2025, France has found himself constantly on the move. The Padres’ decision to sign him to a minor-league deal with a $1.35 million salary for 2026 is a low-risk, high-reward move that fills a need for the team, especially with Sung-Mun Song starting the season on the injured list.
