{"id":105431,"date":"2026-04-12T19:28:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T22:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/nhl-playoff-standings-the-clinching-scenarios-for-sunday\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T19:28:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T22:28:28","slug":"nhl-playoff-standings-the-clinching-scenarios-for-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/nhl-playoff-standings-the-clinching-scenarios-for-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"NHL playoff standings: The clinching scenarios for Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Heading into Saturday, there was much anticipation that multiple teams would clinch playoff spots (and others would be mathematically eliminated) &#8212; to put it mildly, that anticipation was met.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"3edd2776-99a9-c0bb-6a73-863b428e25ef\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/ott\/ottawa-senators\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"585503ab-1462-2afe-7a70-aafea4f6b1b6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/bos\/boston-bruins\">Boston Bruins<\/a> clinched the Eastern wild cards after the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"beb0cb35-4d9f-a5e8-9e7b-d5ca97e51d93\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nj\/new-jersey-devils\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> defeated the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"285ae6e1-8408-88cf-50ad-1a1e7be66658\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/det\/detroit-red-wings\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> in regulation, thus eliminating the Red Wings as well.<\/p>\n<p>Out West, the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"dd8e7d92-918d-4ec1-4e50-c328fc09467a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/vgk\/vegas-golden-knights\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> clinched their spot &#8212; and took over first place in the Pacific Division &#8212; with an overtime win over the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"65489e39-7ab7-70da-94bc-adcc6f0aa1c6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/col\/colorado-avalanche\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a>, while the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c78600f3-cea1-f6e0-11cf-dfeefe1897ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/edm\/edmonton-oilers\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> earned a playoff ticket despite losing to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"47ce4014-1c1f-c67f-bfe6-ec95d5f57a87\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/la\/los-angeles-kings\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. In the process, the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"9d2d39d0-ed26-32e1-dcdf-d48e2cef3c90\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/stl\/st-louis-blues\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ca912ee8-d2a3-3e84-831e-1a0ca38e7c3f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/sea\/seattle-kraken\">Seattle Kraken<\/a> were knocked out.<\/p>\n<p>There is one spot left in the East (the No. 3 seed in the Metro), and two spots open in the West &#8212; with the added possibility of quite a bit of seeding movement in the Pacific. The Caps stay alive in the playoff race with a win of any kind, or an overtime\/shootout loss; a regulation loss eliminates them. A loss doesn&#8217;t eliminate them, but time is running out to catch the Flyers in third. Due to tiebreakers, Boston fell behind Ottawa with its loss on Saturday; if the two teams finish tied in points, the Sens will be the higher of the two wild cards. Why does that matter? Like Montreal, Anaheim is also still alive for a division title; but also like the Canadiens, the Ducks will lose the RW tiebreaker to either team ahead of them, so they need all the points they can get.
