It\u2019s been almost 24 hours since Carlos Ulberg won the UFC light heavyweight title on a busted right knee and the new champ still hasn\u2019t been to hospital.<\/p>\n

But what he has done?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lost the belt, bro,\u201d Ulberg concedes, smiling this particular Monday morning via a Zoom call from his Miami, Florida hotel room.<\/p>\n

But as for how lost is lost?<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, I don\u2019t know exactly where it is,\u201d the Aucklander continues.<\/p>\n

\u201cInitially after winning, the plan was to not have a drink. But you know how these things go, right?<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, someone gives you a champagne to celebrate. Then one thing leads to another and you\u2019re doing shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s \u2018OK, I\u2019ll have another, and another, and another \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a big group of boys over here in Miami and, when the fight was done, we all went out to the afterparty at a nightclub.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen after that, it was back to one of the boys\u2019 apartments and we all hung out there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to be carrying the belt around so I think it\u2019s still there at the apartment somewhere. One of the boys probably has it in bed with him \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Kicking back now in his Miami hotel room, 35-year-old Ulberg is walking Fox Sports Australia <\/i>through the incredible celebrations that have followed his shock title win over Jiri Prochazka at UFC 327.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite suffering a serious knee injury in the first round, which saw him fall to the mat several times, the gutsy New Zealander still went and earned the most incredible of finishes\u2014catching Prochazka with a check left hook late in the first round.<\/p>\n

Immediately as his rival dropped to the canvas, \u2018Black Jag\u2019 then went and confirmed the win via vicious ground and pound.<\/p>\n

Despite suggestions Ulberg has most likely suffered a ruptured ACL, and could be sidelined for up to a year, the Aucklander says he has not even been medically checked, revealing: \u201cI haven\u2019t actually been to the hospital yet\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNah, first things first \u2013 go to the afterparty,\u201d he grins. \u201cWe went out, hung out with all the boys. Got together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen it was back to one of the other guys\u2019 apartments because my room is fairly small \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve only really just come in and laid on the bed now,\u201d the new champ continues, still grinning. \u201cI actually snuck out of the apartment a couple of hours ago, just to have some time on my own. Have a couple of hours to myself and really let this sink in.\u201d<\/p>\n

So as for how your knee is feeling?<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019ve been hobbling around everywhere,\u201d he grins. \u201cSo my knee isn\u2019t really wanting to forgive me right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all been a crazy, crazy whirlwind and I\u2019m just going with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a bit like when I was kickboxing, and broke my hand during King of the Ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was in the second fight on a night where I fought three times.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen after fighting, I\u2019d actually booked a holiday that weekend so still went away.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was only after getting back that I went and saw a doctor who said \u2018you need surgery\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already knew and said \u2018OK, let\u2019s get it done\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think that\u2019s what we\u2019re facing now \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking immediately after the fight, Ulberg said his knee \u201cblew out\u201d. American sports doctor Brian Sutterer also suggested via his YouTube channel that Ulberg has almost certainly suffered an ACL tear requiring surgery and sidelining him for the rest of 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nothing else that is going to cause the tibia to shift forward internally like that and then pop backwards other than an ACL tear,\u201d the MD said after reviewing the footage in slow motion.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cThis is almost certainly going to be a surgical injury. I\u2019d be surprised if we see him fighting in nine to 12 months, which is really a shame when you\u2019ve just acquired a new title.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked just under 24 hours on for his own diagnosis, Ulberg shrugs: \u201cMy knee is really swollen so I\u2019ll stay in the US for scans and then, if I need to go under the knife, I will.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019ll fly to Las Vegas in the next few days and see the doctors there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I can do physio at the UFC Performance Institute and get looked after by the guys there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet the knee sorted in Las Vegas and hang around for a few weeks<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously I\u2019m also keen to get back home to the family. I\u2019m a family guy and I can\u2019t wait to see them.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as for the finish?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way we did it, the way we got that finish, it couldn\u2019t have happened any better,\u201d Ulberg insists.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s what needed to happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor people to really respect what was happening, they needed to see that adversity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019d just got a finish and made it look easy, people might still be going \u2018ah, dunno\u2019 or saying this and that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut because we had to fight through adversity \u2013 and it was quite obvious \u2013 it really made getting the win, getting the title and becoming champion even sweeter.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as for knowing you needed the knockout once your knee buckled?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a thought about that,\u201d the champ concedes. \u201cThinking that if we do go to the corner after the first round, this fight will get called off.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also knew if we were going into the later rounds, it was only going to get so much worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut really, my thinking was more about going \u2018OK, adjust on the fly\u2019, work out what I need to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I had to change the strategy and put some more sting on the shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, over five rounds you don\u2019t want to be doing that and exerting all your energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I knew that as I was throwing kicks and falling over, stepping back and falling, I had to throw some shots and get something that lands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also knew that once something did land, I\u2019d have to go for the kill.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what we needed to do and we did that.<\/p>\n
