Massachusetts drivers are reviving a piece of the state\u2019s visual past, and doing it with surprising enthusiasm.<\/p>\n

The RMV\u2019s \u201cMA250\u201d license plates<\/u><\/a>, introduced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution<\/u><\/a>, have sparked a wave of interest across the state. What began as a limited commemorative design has turned into a sought-after symbol, with drivers lining up to swap out their current plates for the red, white and blue look.<\/p>\n

Over 71,000 people have been issued the plate on a passenger vehicle in Massachusetts and the RMV\u2019s plate lottery<\/u><\/a> saw over 44,000 people enter it.<\/p>\n

While the plates will remain available for the time being, applications for the low-number lottery for the plates will close Friday, April 17 at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n

But already last week, Gov. Maura Healey posted a video<\/a> proclaiming it to be \u201cthe most popular specialty plate in state history.\u201d<\/p>\n

RMV Registrar Colleen Ogilvie<\/u><\/a> says that the appeal comes from people wanting to express personality with their car, as well as an urge to show national pride.<\/p>\n

The symbolism of the design \u2014 the number \u201c1776\u201d circled by stars \u2014 could help explain why the plate feels familiar. The circle of stars recalls Revolutionary-era imagery associated with early American flags, according to Ted Kaye, secretary of the North American Vexillological Association<\/u><\/a> and compiler of guidebook \u201cGood Flag, Bad Flag<\/u><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flags and license plates have a basic connection because they are both \u201cconstrained rectangles that represent place to its own people and to others,\u201d according to Kaye. At times, flags make their ways onto license plates, such as with the New Mexico license plate<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n

According to Kaye\u2019s book, a good flag has the basic principles of simplicity, meaningful symbolism and two to three basic colors that contrast. A license plate may have a different purpose from a flag, but there is some overlap in design principles, according to Kaye.<\/p>\n

Richard Dragon, a Massachusetts native and current Rhode Island resident, is a longtime member of the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association<\/u><\/a>. He has been collecting license plates since he was a kid, a hobby the 62-year-old has kept with him his entire life. Dragon\u2019s love for this particular collectibles-based hobby comes from the rich history behind the plates and the registration systems.<\/p>\n

The anniversary plate surprised him because of how \u201cdramatically different it is than anything else,\u201d he said (albeit with some exceptions \u2014 Dragon cited the state\u2019s 1967 plate<\/u><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Dragon believes that the contrast of the state name is particularly good on the plate, with its dark blue color, saying that as an effective license plate, it is \u201ccertainly very legible.\u201d He believes the interest for the plate is mostly aesthetic.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s first specialty plate<\/u><\/a> was issued about 31 years ago and called the Environmental Trust, or what individuals may remember it as the \u201cright whale plate,\u201d with over 19,000 issued. The design was created in 1994 to raise awareness of investing in charitable organizations, violence, trust and protecting the ocean, according to Ogilvie. There was a second version<\/u><\/a> of the plate released last year.<\/p>\n

Even though the \u201cright whale plate\u201d is described as \u201cwildly popular\u201d by Ogilvie, after it came the Cape and Islands plate<\/u><\/a> in 1996 with over 32,000 issued. The RMV has also seen an increase in plates about the Celtics, the Red Sox, and the Bruins when those teams are doing well, or \u201cwhat is happening in the world\u201d but nothing compares to the interest in the state\u2019s 250 plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that what has been very interesting to me is [the plate] is on all different types of cars,\u201d said Ogilvie. \u201cWhether it is a pickup truck, a passenger car, a sports car \u2014 all different socio-economic statuses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaye believes that it may act as a form of signaling \u201cof what they support or what they\u2019re interested in,\u201d which is similar to flag use.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at this license plate and I see people in Massachusetts saying, \u2018I\u2019m proud to be from a state that was part of the American Revolution,\u2019\u201d says Kaye. \u201c\u2018We\u2019re one of the first 13.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
