A 15.7% rise in gasoline prices accounted for nearly half of last month\u2019s increase.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnynrgu1000z3j6rl2ta9nvd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe quickening can be attributed to energy inflation, or the oil shock associated with the war in Iran; but wholesale inflation was on a bit of a tear before the conflict in Iran began, rising month over month since November,\u201d Elizabeth Renter, senior economist at NerdWallet, wrote in commentary issued Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnynsoe300133j6rjagfizk2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She added: \u201cInflation wasn\u2019t fully under control before the war began, and it\u2019s certainly not contained now.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnyma5ii000g3j6rwo0x29rm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, despite wholesale inflation hitting a three-year high, the March PPI report fared better than economists had expected. They estimated that the war-driven energy shock would cause prices to jump 1.1% from February, driving the annual rate to 4.6%, according to FactSet consensus estimates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnym7ol8000e3j6r9myfw2oe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, Tuesday\u2019s report showed that falling food prices and flat services prices helped to blunt some of the blow from the rapidly rising oil prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnymv9os000o3j6rxis46w64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another likely factor in the tamer-than-expected numbers was the report\u2019s timing: The BLS asked businesses to provide pricing data as of Tuesday of the week containing the 13th. In this case, that would be March 10, which was just two weeks after the US-Israeli strikes in Iran began.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnymlqem000m3j6r9cyjkdef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When excluding the volatile categories of food and energy, core PPI rose just 0.1% for the month, holding the annual rate steady at 3.8%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnyljxsr00013j6r25f3xxxv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The weekslong war in the Middle East has amplified the significance of inflation gauges like PPI, which could indicate how deeply spiking energy costs are rippling through the economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnylmuba00073j6rt7dl3u79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The PPI report comes just days after the Consumer Price Index <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/10\/business\/live-news\/us-cpi-march-inflation-iran\">showed Americans are already paying significantly more<\/a> for a range of goods. The latest CPI report, which captures prices throughout the month and not for any specific data, showed prices rose 0.9% on a monthly basis and 3.3% annually.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnyljxsr00023j6r3qgqf2ch@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            PPI serves as a potential bellwether for what consumers could experience in the months to come. Some of the PPI data also feeds into the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, which is what the Federal Reserve uses for its 2% target rate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnyngonl000v3j6rebr2rnot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            PPI categories that feed into the Fed\u2019s preferred gauge showed firmer increases in March, RSM US economist Tuan Nguyen said, noting a 4.1% increase in airfare prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnynggut000t3j6rks77ai8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat suggests PCE inflation \u2013 particularly the core measure \u2013 could accelerate more than the PPI data alone would indicate,\u201d he wrote in note to investors Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnynk4qt000x3j6r8jxnmi9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nguyen, in an email to CNN, said his firm now expects PCE inflation to rise 0.7% on a monthly basis, bringing the annual rate to 3.5% (versus a 0.4% and 2.8% increase reported for February).
