With his exhilarating melodies, groovy rhythms, distinctive voice, innovative live shows and spirited dance moves, David Byrne has been a cultural force for decades. On April 16, he and his spectacular band offered the audience at Stanford University\u2019s Frost Amphitheater<\/a> an evening of audio-visual entertainment, co-presented by Stanford Live and Goldenvoice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Byrne<\/a> rose to prominence as the leader of the art-rock band Talking Heads in the 1970s and \u201980s, and that group\u2019s \u201cStop Making Sense\u201d set the high-water mark for stagecraft and concert films. <\/p>\n

Over the course of his long and interesting career, the polymath and bicycling advocate has continued to work on all kinds of projects, including founding the nonprofit online magazine \u201cReasons to be Cheerful<\/a>,\u201d which offers \u201cstories of hope, rooted in evidence.\u201d That effort is connected to his 2018 album \u201cAmerican Utopia,\u201d which went on to become a Broadway show and Spike Lee film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Recently, he\u2019s popped up in collaborations with the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and released his latest album \u201cWho Is The Sky?<\/a>\u201d in September 2025 (his trip up to Stanford came between performances at Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival the preceding and following Saturdays).\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Byrne has been to Stanford before<\/a> (he\u2019s even designed artistic bike racks<\/a> for the campus), he noted it was, to his recollection, his first time playing at the amphitheater.\u00a0<\/p>\n
