{"id":113342,"date":"2026-04-23T15:12:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/justice-department-watchdog-to-investigate-handling-of-epstein-files\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:12:09","slug":"justice-department-watchdog-to-investigate-handling-of-epstein-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/justice-department-watchdog-to-investigate-handling-of-epstein-files\/","title":{"rendered":"Justice Department watchdog to investigate handling of Epstein files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobpt3bt000x2dp5c9gv3jlc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Justice Department\u2019s internal watchdog is launching an investigation into the DOJ\u2019s production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/epstein-files\">files and documents related to Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> as controversy continues over the handling of the case of the convicted sex offender.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqkv8800043b6qs48tzzud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Inspector General will focus on \u201cthe DOJ\u2019s identification, collection, and production of responsive material,\u201d it said in a statement Thursday, as well as \u201cprocesses for redacting and withholding material\u201d and how the Justice Department addressed issues following the release of Epstein documents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqkv8800053b6qbug90j7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The vast files collected throughout investigations related to Epstein were ordered to be released by Congress in a law that passed late last year. Some members of Congress have ridiculed the Justice Department for over-redactions and tracking their searches as they went through unredacted versions of the material.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobrzc29000h3b6qm4a5wi13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMen need to be perp-walked in handcuffs to the jail, and until we see that here in this country \u2026 we don\u2019t have a system of justice that\u2019s working,\u201d Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, who co-sponored the Epstein document law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cd0rek7v7npo\" target=\"_blank\">told the BBC<\/a> in March.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqkv8800063b6q5c2tw80z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November after repeated failures from the Justice Department to deliver on past promises that they would be releasing information on Epstein \u2013 even material it did not have, like the long-fabled list of contacts and co-conspirators that now-former Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed was on her desk ready to be released early last year. No such list has been produced and the Justice Department has not charged anyone beyond Epstein and his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqkv8800073b6qhgx8cug7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bondi was fired by President Donald Trump early this year in part because of her continued bungling of the Epstein investigation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqzjco00013b6qb38rc1rj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, in his new role leading the department after Bondi\u2019s ousting, argued during a press conference this month that the new DOJ under Trump\u2019s second term \u201chas been a lot more transparent\u201d than past administrations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqzjzz00033b6qsh67inih@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Blanche has also tried to hurry the Epstein scandal to the dustbin of history.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqzjzz00043b6qyd4vgc2y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think that to the extent that the Epstein files was a part of the past year of this Justice Department, it should not be a part of anything going forward,\u201d Blanche said in an interview with Fox News earlier this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqzjzz00053b6qjtlz5zkp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m not sure you totally get what people feel about that,\u201d Fox News host Jesse Watters said later over Blanche\u2019s answers to questions related to Epstein.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobqkv8800083b6qrhotjy03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The DOJ\u2019s Inspector General previously found that, after an investigation, Epstein killed himself in a jail cell in 2019. Maxwell, his longtime business partner,  is serving a 20-year sentence for her role in conspiring with Epstein to procure minors for him to sexually abuse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobr0cvk000a3b6qn9i48o7y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blanche also met with Maxwell last year in Florida. She was given limited immunity so that she could discuss her criminal case, but did not promise any other benefits in exchange for her testimony, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/22\/politics\/interview-transcript-ghislaine-maxwell-doj\">transcript released by the Justice Department<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobr109l000c3b6q5c0uc26v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, Maxwell was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/01\/politics\/ghislaine-maxwell-federal-prison-texas\">transferred<\/a> to a minimum-security prison camp shortly after the interview was completed.
