Sources indicated mid-May as a potential timeline for an announcement.<\/p>\n<p>While there are still steps to take in terms of approvals via various NCAA committees, a source indicated &#8220;those are just formalities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li\/>\n<li><a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/feature\/story\/_\/id\/30423107\/ncaa-women-bracketology-2027-women-college-basketball-projections\" class=\"img-link\"><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/48609697\/mens-ncaa-basketball-2026-27-way-too-early-top-25-rankings-transfer-portal\" class=\"img-link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=\/photo\/2025\/1030\/r1568474_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&amp;w=130&amp;h=130&amp;scale=crop&amp;location=center\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;They have what they need to move forward,&#8221; a source said.<\/p>\n<p>NCAA officials met with the media partners for the men&#8217;s tournament last week, sources told ESPN. The expansion has been driven by power conferences, which have grown throughout the course of the current deal.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanics of the expansion in the men&#8217;s tournament will include eight additional at-large bids. What&#8217;s known now as the First Four &#8212; eight teams playing four games in Dayton, Ohio &#8212; will expand to 12 games played by 24 teams at two different sites, one of which is expected to remain in Dayton.<\/p>\n<p>The location of the new site has yet to be determined, but it is expected to be located west of the Eastern Time Zone to help logistics.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion would lead to an additional eight men&#8217;s games, meaning the Tuesday and Wednesday of the NCAA tournament will feature 24 of the 76 men&#8217;s teams. That number now includes eight teams who would have qualified for the traditional bracket that will square off against the eight at-large additions.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional 64-team men&#8217;s team bracket will still begin on Thursday and look much the same.
