Al Sharpton<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI served for four years, being a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H0NpBMl3VBw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harris said<\/a>. \u201cI spent countless hours in my West Wing office, footsteps away from the Oval Office. I spent countless hours in the Oval Office, in the Situation Room. I know what the job is. And I know what it requires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I have no doubt in my mind that she knows what the job entails. What I doubt is that she has the backing to actually secure the presidency for the Democrats. In all of this fanfare over her potential run, my question is, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why is she willing to humiliate herself and the Democratic Party for a second time? Why does she think she has a better shot this time? What has she done to better the lives of people who voted for her in the months since she lost the presidential election?<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"75916845007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I was a Harris supporter in 2024. I covered her race extensively and voted for her that November. But even I think her chances of attaining the presidency are slim \u2013 and the nation has far too much to lose to bet on her. It\u2019s up to her to decide whether to run again \u2013 but as a Democratic voter, I\u2019m wary of seeing her at the top of the 2028 ticket after her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2024\/results\/president?election-data-id=2024-PG&amp;election-painting-mode=projection-with-lead&amp;filter-key-races=false&amp;filter-flipped=false&amp;filter-remaining=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devastating loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At least Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2016\/results\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won the popular vote in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Democrats won&#8217;t win elections <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2026\/04\/13\/tiktok-elections-newsom-mamdani-aoc-affordability\/89522863007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">from the For You page | Opinion<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Kamala Harris is doing well in polls. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An April poll from <a href=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/2028_Presidential_Preferences_poll_results_8WxHg6O.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net\/documents\/2028_Presidential_Preferences_poll_results_8WxHg6O.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouGov showed Harris ahead of the competition<\/a> with 24% support, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/echeloninsights.com\/hubfs\/_Media%20for%20Insights%20Blog\/April%202026%20Voter%20Omnibus%20Topline%20-%20External.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Echelon Insights<\/a> poll from a similar time period showed her at the top with 22% support.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Yet prediction markets are saying otherwise. As of April 30, both <a href=\"https:\/\/kalshi.com\/markets\/kxpresnomd\/democratic-primary-winner\/kxpresnomd-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kalshi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/polymarket.com\/event\/democratic-presidential-nominee-2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Polymarket<\/a> put the former vice president\u2019s odds of being the Democratic nominee at just over 9%. That does not mean she\u2019s popular with the overall population. For most people, Harris\u2019 name carries baggage from the 2024 presidential campaign, as well as her failure to do anything of note following her attempt to reach the Oval Office. There is no corner of the country he hasn&#8217;t affected, from mass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/12\/18\/nx-s1-5626822\/trump-federal-workers-firing-civil-servants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">firings of federal workers<\/a> and tariffs that have <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetlab.yale.edu\/research\/tracking-economic-effects-tariffs#:~:text=Pass%2Dthrough%20to%20consumer%20prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raised the cost of living<\/a> for American families to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/6-ways-trumps-executive-orders-are-targeting-transgender-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attacks on trans people<\/a>. Instead of standing up for the people who voted for her, Harris has been absent from the conversation that Democrats should be easily winning.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s clear to me Harris shouldn&#8217;t run. Here is why.<\/h2>\n<p>My problems with Harris go beyond the tired trope that a woman, especially a woman of color, cannot be president. It may not have happened yet, but to say that this is the only thing keeping her from the presidency is naive. Harris, while qualified, simply doesn\u2019t have the popularity it would take to win against whichever Republican becomes the 2028 nominee.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"85457413007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Harris is not a candidate who can ignite enthusiasm among the most progressive Democrats, and she burned bridges with the establishment wing of the party when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/09\/28\/kamala-harris-book-107-days-democrats\/86347949007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published her memoir in 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/><partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>On the presidential campaign trail, Harris failed to establish a clear message on affordability, continuously touted the lethality of the U.S. military and gave non-answers on the situation in Gaza and transgender issues. She aimed for the middle by following the playbook that former President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/joe-biden\/\" data-autotag=\"bce3c45f-197d-4845-8248-87d4f3a737c8\">Joe Biden<\/a> had laid out for her, and ended up pleasing no one in the process. Her role in his administration, as well as the way she came to be the nominee in 2024, still casts a long shadow over her legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Though Harris would not be running against Trump in 2028, she would be running against someone \u2013 be it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/jd-vance-2028-presidential-election-chances-poll-11825871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vice President JD Vance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/24\/white-house-insiders-see-rubio-on-the-rise-as-a-potential-2028-pick-00891256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a> or some other Republican waiting in the wings \u2013 who is hand-selected by the president. The Republicans will select someone molded in Trump\u2019s image to see if they can pull off another eight years of complete political dominance.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Democrats like her, Harris would be a weak candidate against any of the Republicans mentioned. She does not have the messaging down, and the country can\u2019t afford another vibes-based election.
