Even to read\u00aders only casu\u00adal\u00adly acquaint\u00aded with movies, more than one title pops out from his fil\u00admog\u00adra\u00adphy:\u00a0<em>The Appren\u00adtice\u00adship of Dud\u00addy Kravitz<\/em>, <em>Fun with Dick and Jane<\/em>, <em>North Dal\u00adlas Forty<\/em>,<em> Week\u00adend at Bernie<\/em><em>\u2019s<\/em>. The focus on gen\u00adres, and their vari\u00adety, sug\u00adgests not an auteur but a jour\u00adney\u00adman, the kind of effi\u00adcient, ver\u00adsa\u00adtile prob\u00adlem-solver that used to keep Hol\u00adly\u00adwood afloat. But occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly, the work of a jour\u00adney\u00adman can achieve its own kind of tran\u00adscen\u00addence: that moment came with <em>First Blood<\/em>, in Kotch\u00adef\u00adf\u2019s case, which launched the <em>Ram\u00adbo\u00a0<\/em>series in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Those who remem\u00adber Sylvester Stal\u00adlone\u2019s John Ram\u00adbo as a head\u00adband\u00aded one-man army bent on re-fight\u00ading and win\u00adning the Viet\u00adnam War, one bout of ultra-vio\u00adlence at a time, will be sur\u00adprised by the rel\u00ada\u00adtive meek\u00adness of his first onscreen incar\u00adna\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<em>First Blood<\/em>\u2019s sto\u00adry is sum\u00adma\u00adrized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AbFKplwHY2c\">the <em>Cin\u00ade\u00admaS\u00adtix<\/em> video above<\/a>, Ram\u00adbo drifts into a small Wash\u00ading\u00adton town after a search for his Viet\u00adnam com\u00adrades comes to a fruit\u00adless end. Hos\u00adtile\u00adly eject\u00aded by the local sher\u00adiff, he nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless walks right back into city lim\u00adits. Arrest\u00aded and booked at the police sta\u00adtion, he turns on the cops in a PTSD-trig\u00adgered rage. When he makes his escape into the for\u00adest, the law pur\u00adsues him, leav\u00ading him no choice \u2014 at least in his own mind \u2014 but to declare war on the police, the town, and per\u00adhaps the whole of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p>This is a promis\u00ading enough nar\u00adra\u00adtive for a post-Viet\u00adnam genre pic\u00adture, as a vari\u00adety of pro\u00adduc\u00aders must have thought while David Mor\u00adrel\u00adl\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal nov\u00adel was cir\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00ading through Hol\u00adly\u00adwood. But only the star pow\u00ader of Stal\u00adlone, with the first cou\u00adple of\u00a0<em>Rocky<\/em> pic\u00adtures under his belt, could get it made. And indeed,\u00a0he almost got it un-made: dis\u00admayed by its\u00a0ini\u00adtial three-and-a-half hour cut, he decid\u00aded to buy the rights and destroy the neg\u00ada\u00adtive. The solu\u00adtion that end\u00aded up sav\u00ading the movie was\u00adn\u2019t much less dras\u00adtic, pro\u00adduc\u00ading a\u00a093-minute cut that excised most of Ram\u00adbo\u2019s dia\u00adlogue.
