This year has been a wild ride for the chip sector; there’s no denying it.\u00a0In February, Amazon<\/strong>, Alphabet<\/strong>, Meta<\/strong>, and others all predicted enormous capital expenditures for 2026 to build out their artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) infrastructure.That caused an investor panic that wiped out $1 trillion in short order in AI stocks, followed by a rough March amid the ongoing chaos caused by the Iran war.<\/p>\n

Amid all this volatility, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF<\/strong> (NASDAQ: SMH)<\/span> — despite dipping 13% between the end of January and the end of March — is up 30% over the past month, and 40% year to date. It seems as though no amount of uncertainty is derailing this train.<\/p>\n

The VanEck Semiconductor ETF’s holdings are essentially the chip industry’s<\/a> “greatest hits” grouped into a single ticker. The bulk of them (about 78%) are based in the United States, while the remaining 22% is dominated by the Netherlands and Taiwan. Its top 10 stock holdings and their allocation in the ETF’s portfolio are:<\/p>\n

    Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing<\/strong>: 10.5%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Intel<\/strong>: 7%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Advanced Micro Devices<\/strong>: 6.17%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Texas Instruments<\/strong>: 5%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Micron Technology<\/strong>: 4.9%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    All these stocks profit in some way from the AI capex plans of the Magnificent Seven and many other companies.<\/p>\n

    Nvidia is the most dominant AI hardware company in the world, and its graphics processing units (GPUs) are used by just about every AI software company.<\/p>\n

    Taiwan Semiconductor is the largest chip manufacturer globally, responsible for 72% of the total pure foundry market.<\/p>\n

    Broadcom is Google’s partner in developing the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), one of the biggest competitors to Nvidia’s GPU.<\/p>\n

    Micron is one of only three companies that dominate the global memory chip market. It produces the HBM4 memory chip for Nvidia’s Vera Rubin GPU, and it stands to profit handsomely from the global memory shortage we’re in right now.<\/p>\n
