According to the Pollution Control Department, concentrations of less than 10 mg\/kg are considered broadly safe for aquatic life; levels higher than 33 mg\/kg are deemed dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Arsenic levels in sediment taken from various points along the Kok, Sai and Ruak rivers, key tributaries of the Mekong, all ranged from below the 33 mg\/kg safe limit up to 57 mg\/kg, the Pollution Control Department said via its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PCD.go.th\/posts\/pfbid02cmetpMcKsu2NB7EGD3qzqoN5HaRzqTofrduowfuuRxk94SWKCs4FyEZsycwgzaRWl\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">official Facebook page<\/a>, noting the contamination appears to be spreading through the river system.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_318985\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thailand\u2019s Pollution Control Department posted results of the sediment tests to their official Facebook page on April 10, 2026. A rush of mining seeking to extract gold, critical minerals and rare earth elements has left a swath of destruction in northeastern Myanmar, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stimson.org\/2025\/mining-in-mainland-southeast-asia-river-basins-dashboard\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">U.S.-based think tank the Stimson Center<\/a> using satellite imagery analysis to identify 833 unregulated mines across the Mekong River Basin. Of these, 86 are thought to be rare earth mines, due to the distinctive blue tarpaulin leaching ponds. More than half of these 86 mines opened between 2024 and 2026.<\/p>\n<p>More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrcmekong.org\/mekong-river-basin\/#:~:text=An%20estimated%2080%25%20of%20the,communities%20living%20in%20the%20basin.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">50 million people<\/a> across the Lower Mekong River Basin rely on the river for water, fish and livelihoods, but the Mekong has also long been a biodiversity hotspot, hosting some 20,000 species of plants, along with a wide array of aquatic life such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/15944\/5324699\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">critically endangered Mekong giant catfish<\/a> (<em>Pangasianodon gigas<\/em>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/15419\/123790805\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">endangered Irrawaddy dolphin<\/a> (<em>Orcaella brevirostris<\/em>). The Mekong subspecies of Irrawaddy dolphin is deemed critically endangered, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mekongeye.com\/2025\/04\/07\/save-river-dolphins\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">fewer than 100 individuals<\/a> thought to remain. The river <a href=\"https:\/\/trackingchange.ca\/river-basins\/mekong\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">also supports<\/a> an estimated 1,200 bird, 800 reptile and amphibian, and 430 mammal species.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the Mekong and its beneficiaries have been strained by the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/05\/banks-backing-mekong-hydropower-failing-on-due-diligence-report-reveals\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">proliferation of hydropower dams<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/aug\/11\/mekong-river-megafish-shrunk-by-half-study-overfishing-dams-climate-crisis\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">unsustainable fishing<\/a>, rampant deforestation, changing land-use and contamination from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308521X26001411\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">agricultural chemicals<\/a>. Banner image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Exporting the problem downstream<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Rare earth elements are crucial to military, aerospace and automobile industries globally, as well as fueling the green energy transition. But they\u2019re typically extracted using an especially ecologically destructive form of mining. The process involves injecting a liquid solution of toxic chemicals into mountaintops, liquefying the contents, draining them out, and separating the rare earth elements from the liquefied ore in leaching ponds.<\/p>\n<p>The level of environmental damage caused by this form of mining, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0304386X25000714\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">in situ mining<\/a>, saw China, the world\u2019s leading producer and processor of rare earths, place heavy restrictions on its domestic mines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/26\/business\/global\/26rare.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">back in 2009<\/a>, while quietly moving mining operations into other jurisdictions, like Myanmar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2012\/aug\/07\/china-rare-earth-village-pollution\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Mongolia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/adf-magazine.com\/2026\/02\/chinese-mines-openly-break-malawian-laws\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Malawi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While various armed factions in Myanmar are mining critical and rare earth minerals as a means of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00472336.2025.2494109#d1e355\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">financing the ongoing fighting<\/a>, much of the rare earth mining operations in the Mekong River Basin are focused in the Kengtung, Tachileik and Monghsat districts of Shan state on the country\u2019s eastern border with Thailand. These parts of the basin are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThomasVLinge\/status\/2050571949613433199?s=20\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">primarily territories held<\/a> by the United Wa State Army (UWSA) and the allied National Democratic Alliance Army, both of which enjoy close ties to China and agreements with Myanmar\u2019s military guaranteeing a level of autonomy in exchange for neutrality in the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Mining across Shan state is also suspected to the source of contamination that was detected by Thailand\u2019s Pollution Control Department in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/04\/asias-longest-free-flowing-river-contaminated-by-arsenic-linked-to-myanmar-mines\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">the Salween River<\/a>, where tests performed in March 2026 saw an <a href=\"https:\/\/transbordernews.in.th\/home\/?p=45889\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">increase in arsenic levels<\/a> compared to January 2026 and November 2025 results.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_307944\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307944\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/20030220\/51_RER_Myanmar_2025-2025.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Satellite imagery analysis from the Stimson Center shows how rare earth mining operations shifted from Kachin state to Shan state in recent years, intensifying transboundary pollution. Image by Emilie Languedoc \/ Mongabay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thai authorities have since issued alerts to various riverine communities, including those living along the Mekong in Chiang Rai, warning them against consuming too much fish from the rivers. Some communities were urged to avoid the water altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Regan Kwan, lead researcher at the Stimson Center, helped devise the think tank\u2019s online platform monitoring mining across mainland Southeast Asia. In an email, he told Mongabay that the most recent detections of arsenic contamination in the Mekong could be related to seasonal changes, with heavy rainfall increasing the likelihood of leaching ponds at mining sites overflowing and accelerating the flow of rivers, carrying contamination farther downstream. Image courtesy of Ecological Alert and Recovery\u2013Thailand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Limits to authority and testing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A representative of the Mekong River Commission, which seeks to regulate activity on the transboundary river network, told Mongabay by email that arsenic contamination appears to be locally concentrated in Chiang Rai and that there\u2019s \u201cno indication of immediate basin-wide impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mekong River Commission is working to facilitate cooperation and data exchanges between governments, but doesn\u2019t carry out independent field testing, its representative said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the information currently available, there is no confirmed evidence establishing a direct link between the observed conditions in the Mekong River and mining activities in any specific country or area,\u201d the representative said. \u201cHowever, monitoring results indicate that inputs through the Kok\u2013Sai\u2013Ruak river network may be one pathway requiring further assessment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They added that the transboundary nature of the Mekong requires monitoring of the entire basin and that this monitoring is ongoing throughout the commission\u2019s member states: Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Delgado.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mongabay contacted the Thai Pollution Control Department, the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Lao National Mekong Committee for comment on the issue. None had responded by the time this story was published. Cambodia\u2019s Ministry of Environment also didn\u2019t respond, but Heng Kong, director of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akp.gov.kh\/post\/detail\/366378\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Cambodian Agricultural Sciences Academy<\/a>, told Mongabay that \u201cWe do not have budget to [test for] these heavy metals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mongabay also sent questions about the import of minerals from Myanmar to China\u2019s foreign ministry, but it hasn\u2019t responded.<\/p>\n<p>Information has remained sparse across the region, with few details offered on the consequences of exposure to heavy metals polluting river systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike many chemicals, metals do not degrade,\u201d said Brian Eyler, director of the Stimson Center\u2019s Southeast Asia program. \u201cThey persist, accumulate, and continue to cause harm long after mining stops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd to be sure,\u201d he added, \u201cthe mining has not stopped in the Mekong region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Banner image:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><em>Fishers in the Mekong River near Chiang Khong, Thailand.
