4:03 \n Health authorities across several countries are racing to trace and contain an outbreak of hantavirus after the World Health Organization said that five confirmed infections had been identified among people connected to the cruise ship MV Hondius.\n <\/p>\n \n The virus is typically associated with rodents, but it may have passed from human to human aboard the vessel, according to WHO. Since April 11, three people from the ship have died, while a handful of others are sick.\n <\/p>\n \n The outbreak was first reported to WHO on May 2 and remains a low risk<\/a> to the general public, the organization says. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified its hantavirus response as level 3, the agency\u2019s lowest level of emergency, according to a person involved in the situation.\n <\/p>\n \n Spanish authorities will conduct a full epidemiological investigation and disinfect the ship after it docks in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where WHO believes the port has the right conditions for passengers to safely disembark.\n <\/p>\n \n Here are the details by the numbers so far.\n <\/p>\n \n CNN\u2019s Brenda Goodman and Lauren Kent contributed to this report.<\/em>\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n As of Friday there are 147 people \u2013 87 passengers<\/strong> and 60 crew members \u2013<\/strong> aboard the MV Hondius, according to Oceanwide Exploration.

\n Those on board represent 24 nationalities,<\/strong> including 17 Americans<\/strong>.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n Authorities have said they\u2019re completing additional contact tracing of 82 passengers and six crew members <\/strong>from an April 25 Airlink<\/a> flight to Johannesburg from Saint Helena that a Dutch woman who had been on the ship took before she died.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n KLM said<\/a> authorities in the Netherlands have also reached out to an undisclosed number of passengers<\/strong> on a second flight that the Dutch woman briefly boarded in Johannesburg. She left the 11:15 p.m. flight, KL592, before it took off because she was too sick to fly. A flight attendant who had experienced symptoms tested negative, WHO told CNN.

\n British health authorities said Friday that two UK nationals <\/strong>have confirmed hantavirus cases, and there is an additional suspected case of a British national who disembarked the ship on the island of Tristan da Cunha.

\n Swiss authorities are carrying out additional contact tracing<\/strong> for people who came into contact with a passenger who left the MV Hondius in late April<\/a> and is being treated at a Swiss hospital, according to Switzerland\u2019s health ministry. The patient\u2019s wife, who was also on the trip, has not reported symptoms and is isolating as a precaution, the Swiss health ministry said.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n In the United States, five states<\/strong> \u2014 Arizona, California, Georgia, Texas and Virginia \u2014 say they\u2019re monitoring seven people who had already disembarked from the ship. Officials said none is exhibiting signs of the illness. New Jersey said it\u2019s also monitoring two people who were exposed, and Utah reported that at least one passenger was from that state.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n Governments are also tracking at least 30 passengers<\/strong> who disembarked at the remote South Atlantic island of Saint Helena in late April and others who went through other ports, leaving for a variety of countries, all before the outbreak was fully understood.

\n As of Friday, there were six confirmed <\/strong>cases, and two others are considered suspected cases, according to WHO<\/a>.

\n On April 6, a 70-year-old<\/strong> Dutch man suddenly fell ill on the ship with a fever, headache, abdominal pain and diarrhea, according to the South African Health Department. He went into respiratory distress April 11<\/strong> and died onboard the ship that day. His body was removed to Saint Helena on April 24. <\/strong>No microbiological tests were performed to determine his illness, so he is considered a probable case.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n On April 24, <\/strong>the man\u2019s 69-year-old wife <\/strong>went ashore at Saint Helena with <\/strong>stomach problems. She then flew<\/a> to Johannesburg, and her condition deteriorated on board, WHO said. She collapsed while trying to fly home to the Netherlands and died at a nearby hospital on April 26.<\/strong> On May 4, <\/strong>scientists used molecular tests to confirm that she had hantavirus.

\n The third person to die<\/strong>, a German woman, came down with a fever and malaise on April 28.<\/strong> She developed pneumonia and died May 2<\/strong> on board the ship. Testing of a postmortem sample in the Netherlands confirmed that she had the Andes strain of hantavirus.

Initial lab tests for hantavirus were negative, but on May 2,<\/strong> a molecular test confirmed an Andes hantavirus infection.<\/strong>

\n A ship doctor <\/strong>developed symptoms April 30, and he tested positive for Andes virus on May 6. He was evacuated to the Netherlands that day and is in stable condition in isolation.

\n WHO believes<\/a> that the Dutch couple and <\/strong>possibly others<\/strong><\/a> were infected before they joined the cruise April 1<\/strong>, possibly while doing some activities in Argentina, where hantavirus is endemic<\/a>, said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO\u2019s director for epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention.

\n After sequencing the virus from some of those infected, WHO confirmed<\/a> that the cases were the result of a strain<\/strong> called the Andes hantavirus.

\n The Andes strain<\/a> is considered the only <\/strong>type of hantavirus known to have some limited human-to-human transmission.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n Hantavirus typically incubates for one to six weeks after exposure.<\/strong>

\n WHO has classified hantaviruses in general as an emerging priority<\/a> because of how serious the infections can be.

\n Human\u2011to\u2011human transmission due to Andes virus is rare<\/strong> but has been reported in community settings involving close and prolonged contact, like among married couples and people who shared cabins, according to WHO. \u201cThis is not a virus that spreads like flu or like Covid. It\u2019s quite different,\u201d Van Kerkhove said.

\n Dr. Gustavo Palacios, a microbiologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York who studied the virus in Argentina, estimated that there have been about 3,000 cases <\/strong>of the Andes strain of the virus in history.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n Palacios believes the window for transmission<\/a> of the Andes virus is short, maybe about a day<\/strong>, but it can spread easily after someone is in only brief proximity to the person who is sick.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n Peak infectiousness is believed to be on the day<\/strong> a fever begins.
\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n
\n According to Palacios\u2019 study of a 2018-19 outbreak<\/a> in Argentina, the Andes virus reproductive number was estimated at an average of 2.12, meaning each infected person passed the virus to about 2.12 other people<\/strong> before there were public health interventions. The overall outbreak average was 1.19. After interventions like isolation and quarantine, it was 0.96. It\u2019s unclear what the reproductive number of the cruise ship cluster might be.
