{"id":126320,"date":"2026-05-10T19:05:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T22:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/michael-mcdowell-reveals-who-successor-in-no-71-car-could-be\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T19:05:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T22:05:34","slug":"michael-mcdowell-reveals-who-successor-in-no-71-car-could-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/michael-mcdowell-reveals-who-successor-in-no-71-car-could-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael McDowell Reveals Who Successor in No. 71 Car Could Be"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>NASCAR\u2019s silly season is just a few months away and, while Michael McDowell isn\u2019t one of the biggest names being talked about, the veteran driver does believe he knows who his successor will be.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters at Watkins Glen, McDowell called Tristan McKee \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Frontstretch\/status\/2053116373862072458?s=20\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">the real deal<\/a>\u201d and believes he will be the one who takes over behind the wheel of the No. 71 car for Spire Motorsports when McDowell retires.<\/p>\n<p>Coming into the year, McKee was ranked 14th among the top NASCAR prospects in 2025 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nascar\/ranking-top-20-nascar-prospects\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">Fox Sports<\/a>\u2018 Bob Pockrass. He became the second-youngest ARCA winner in 2025 at Watkins Glen, just two years after he became the youngest driver ever to win in the CARS Tour Pro Late Model division.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, McKee doesn\u2019t turn 16 until August. The Virginia native has already raced in the ARCA Menards Series and the ARCA Menards Series East, but while he\u2019s a rising star in NASCAR, he still needs to prove himself at the Truck Series and O\u2019Reilly Auto Parts Series levels.<\/p>\n<p>Realistically, McKee is at least three years away from having a shot at a full-time ride in the Cup Series and even that timeline would be a stretch. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-examining-michael-mcdowell-s-future-in-nascar\">Examining Michael McDowell\u2019s Future in NASCAR<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large mobile-image-full-width\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Scott Kinser-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McDowell, who turns 42 in December, clearly has no intention of retiring anytime soon. The longtime Cup Series driver intends to remain behind the wheel of the No. 71 for several more seasons, but even that seems unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the issue for McDowell is the underwhelming results. His last win came at the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard back in 2023. More troublesome for Spire Motorsports, his results are getting worse every year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, McDowell had seven top-10 finishes with six pole positions and 256 laps led, finishing the season with a 14.58 average starting position and a 21.31 average finishing position. A year later, McDowell led just 96 laps with six top-10s and two poles, and his average starting position fell to 15.69.<\/p>\n<p>Things have only gotten worse in 2026. Through 11 races, McDowell ranks 23rd in points (189), 18th in average starting position (19.0) and 24th in average finishing position (21.5).<\/p>\n<p>Spire has made it clear in recent years that it wants to be one of the top teams in the Cup Series. Carson Hocevar, who earned his first Cup Series win at Talladega, is emerging as a superstar, and Daniel Suarez is enjoying a rebound year in his first season with Spire.<\/p>\n<p>McDowell is unquestionably the worst-performing driver at Spire Motorsports right now.
