(WTVD) &#8212; <\/span>A new push is underway in the Triangle to stop people from losing thousands of dollars to scams involving cryptocurrency ATMs.  These <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE\" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/post\/bitcoin-scam-warning-atm-scams-taking-millions-consumers-us\/17970967\/\" target=\"_self\">kiosks<\/a> can be found across the Triangle in gas stations, grocery stores, and other businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">According to the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE\" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/AnnualReport\/Reports\/2025_IC3Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FBI<\/a>, scams involving cryptocurrency ATMs cost Americans nearly $389 million in 2025, with older adults being hit the hardest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">To help spread awareness, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE\" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/helpline\/?cmp=PDS5JO236R78Q&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=12138172264&amp;gbraid=0AAAAABqr32N3j2kTszWhTynSDeqtX5h_3&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwn4vQBhBsEiwAq3hhNyV-8PZdkezuRIHKo1m48sYFZ9g9W76q3t8FyrvBkf-bbKoCcHzd0BoCVeAQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">AARP Fraud Watch volunteers<\/a> teamed up with law enforcement and visited several Triangle businesses with crypto ATM machines, encouraging owners to place warning signs on the kiosks, alerting customers about scams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">&#8220;We like to find business owners like you who want to be part of the solution,&#8221; said Steve Hahn with AARP.  At one gas station, cashier Hari Kharel said customers frequently come in confused about how the machines work. &#8220;They question how to use the machine, like how to put the money,&#8221; Kharel said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oLzSq QrHMO fnRUo pvsTF EhJPu vPlOC zNYgW OsTsW RMeqy daRVX ISNQ sKyCY eRftA acPPc MENS nFwaT MCnQE mEeeY SmBjI xegrY rPLsU iulOd NIuqO zzscu lzDCc aHUBM IEgzD OjMNy eQqcx SVqKB GQmdz jaoD VWDdR ONJdw vrZxD OnRTz gbbfF roDbV GPGwb oMlSS gfNzt oJhud eXZcf zhVlX\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage GpQCA lZur asrEW\" data-testid=\"prism-inline-image\">\n<figure class=\"kzIjN GNmeK pYrtp dSqFO\" data-testid=\"prism-figure\"><figcaption\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">When it comes to victims of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE\" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/post\/bitcoin-scam-warning-atm-scams-taking-millions-consumers-us\/17970967\/\">cryptocurrency ATM scams in 2025<\/a>, according to the FBI, 76% of losses connected to victims aged 60 and older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">Dolores Miller became one of those victims after receiving a phone call from someone pretending to be law enforcement. The scammer claimed there was a warrant out for her arrest and even texted her what she now knows was a fake warrant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">&#8220;He said that I should take the cash for the bond money and put it into the Bitcoin machine,&#8221; Miller said.  Panicked, she followed the caller&#8217;s instructions and went to a cryptocurrency ATM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">&#8220;I took the money to the ATM, I mean, to the Bitcoin machine, and I was like, feeding the money in there all these hundreds and when I would get upset, and I&#8217;d start crying, he would play good cop, and he&#8217;d say, &#8216;it&#8217;s going to be all right, I&#8217;m here with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">She eventually realized it was all a scam, but not before losing nearly $10,000.  &#8220;I felt the feeling in your body, your soul, your mind that you have just been totally manipulated,&#8221; Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">Investigator Bryan Williscroft with the Fuquay-Varina Police Department said these scams are becoming increasingly common and extremely difficult to investigate once the money is converted into cryptocurrency. &#8220;Technology is used to mask who they are, where they are, and it&#8217;s just it&#8217;s a catch-up game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">Unfortunately, with <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE\" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/troubleshooter\/\">these types of scams<\/a>, once the money is converted, there&#8217;s really little we could do,&#8221; Williscroft said.  That&#8217;s one reason investigators and AARP Fraud Watch volunteers spent the day visiting businesses with cryptocurrency ATMs and educating owners about warning signs and scams. &#8220;Know how to recognize it, because everybody says it&#8217;ll never happen to me and then it does,&#8221; Williscroft said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">While many states have laws regulating cryptocurrency ATMs, North Carolina currently does not. Advocates are now pushing for changes aimed at increasing protections and awareness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">Authorities say these scams often begin with threatening phone calls from someone pretending to be law enforcement or claiming there are fraud charges connected to the victim.
