\n President Donald Trump has governed throughout his second term like a man who wields unconstrained power. It tends to prompt frustrations for him later when the approach runs headlong into reality.\n <\/p>\n

\n His gaffe this week, when he said he didn\u2019t consider Americans\u2019 finances<\/a> while trying to resolve the Iran war, epitomizes the problem.\n <\/p>\n

\n When asked Tuesday how much Americans\u2019 economic concerns were motivating his push for a peace deal, Trump responded: \u201cNot even a little bit.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe only thing that matters when I\u2019m talking about Iran [is] they can\u2019t have a nuclear weapon,\u201d Trump said<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation. I don\u2019t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That\u2019s all.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump is no stranger to dismissive comments about the economic plight<\/a> of everyday Americans. But this suggested he just didn\u2019t care \u2014 as if it wasn\u2019t even on his radar.\n <\/p>\n

\n That risks sounding particularly tone-deaf given how bad the president\u2019s economic numbers are<\/a> and how much Americans already perceive him to be neglecting the issue<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n Predictably, Republicans quickly tried to explain away Trump\u2019s comments.\n <\/p>\n

\n While retiring Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina told CNN that Trump\u2019s comments were \u201cconcerning,\u201d others have sought to downplay them.\n <\/p>\n

\n Sen. John Cornyn of Texas told CNN that it was \u201cjust a sort of a throwaway line.\u201d Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming declined to comment to a MeidasTouch reporter, \u201cmostly because I think he actually does care<\/a>.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Others like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas fell back on the idea that the \u201ccontext\u201d of Trump\u2019s comment might not be so bad. Nehls also encouraged people to \u201crelax.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n And then there was Vice President JD Vance. He claimed Wednesday that Trump\u2019s comments had been misrepresented. But he also sounded a much more conciliatory, feel-your-pain note on the economy than Trump did.\n <\/p>\n

\n He said twice that the administration cares about Americans\u2019 finances. He swore three times that it was focused on the issue. He also acknowledged \u201cwe have a lot of work to do\u201d on delivering prosperity and acknowledged \u201cthe inflation number last month was not great.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n <\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n It was the kind of nuanced response that plenty in Trump\u2019s political operation probably wish the president himself had delivered.\n <\/p>\n

\n But, of course, this is Trump.\n <\/p>\n

\n There is a plausible explanation for his dismissiveness toward the financial impacts of the war: that he\u2019d simply like to pretend they don\u2019t exist.\n <\/p>\n

\n The financial effects are, after all, the main constraint on him holding out for a peace deal with Iran that meets all his demands. Higher gas prices especially are the primary cost of the war that Americans are feeling, especially given the US military strategy has kept casualties low on its side.\n <\/p>\n

\n And crucially, those domestic repercussions are something that his foe, the Iranian government, doesn\u2019t have to worry about as much. While the war and the US blockade on the Strait of Hormuz are unquestionably causing more damage to Iran\u2019s economy than the United States\u2019, the authoritarian government in Tehran simply isn\u2019t as responsive to complaints of its citizens.\n <\/p>\n

\n That, like many aspects of this conflict, creates a kind of asymmetric warfare where the opposition has a much larger built-in pain tolerance \u2014 and more leverage because of it.\n <\/p>\n

\n There\u2019s even a valid argument that this is the kind of thing Trump should<\/em> be telegraphing to Iran. By saying that he\u2019s not considering Americans\u2019 economic pain, he\u2019s signaling that he\u2019s not overly anxious to cut a deal to end the war. In short, that he\u2019ll hold out for his demands.\n <\/p>\n

\n (Of course, there are already myriad other data points to suggest Trump is actually quite anxious<\/a> for a deal to bring the war to an end.)\n <\/p>\n

\n But by speaking dismissively about Americans\u2019 finances, Trump could actually be hurting<\/em> his leverage.\n <\/p>\n

\n The war is already unpopular, and Trump\u2019s approval rating on the economy keeps dropping. To the extent his dismissiveness exacerbates both, it could increase the pressure on the US president to get out of the war. Not to mention, if the war drags on past the midterms and Democrats gain control of the House, Trump will have to deal with a less cooperative Congress.\n <\/p>\n

\n And there is reason to believe his comments could hurt Republicans come November. Polls, after all, show Americans writ large simply don\u2019t see the point of the war and don\u2019t view it as worth the economic costs<\/a>. Another shows three-quarters of them think Trump hasn\u2019t paid enough attention to Americans\u2019 cost of living.\n <\/p>\n

\n And no issue looms larger over this election \u2014 and most elections \u2014 like the economy.\n <\/p>\n

\n There was an easy way for Trump to prevent this, though: Build the case for the war ahead of time. Lay out discreet and consistent goals and make sure the American people were bought-in and ready to sacrifice personally for the greater good.\n <\/p>\n

\n But Trump didn\u2019t even try<\/em> to make that case.\n <\/p>\n

\n He instead launched the war suddenly and then spent weeks backfilling the justifications<\/a> for what he had just done.\n <\/p>\n

\n It was almost like he didn\u2019t even think he had to explain himself to the American people and do the legwork to build support \u2014 as if that were an unnecessary nuisance.\n <\/p>\n

\n That sensibility existed on Day One of his second term and the day the Iran war began, and it persists to this day.\n <\/p>\n

\n And it\u2019s still doing him and the Republican Party no favors.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
