Not for comfort, but because it was where his wife had caught him cheating with his mistress.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large alignnone\"><figcaption>Unusual divorce settlement asks are a regular occurrence, according to attorneys. <span class=\"credit\">nicoletaionescu \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These requests are not outliers; they are quite common. And divorce lawyers say the more insignificant and strange the ask, usually, the more emotional and contentious the split.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most common fights I see are over stupid, inexpensive items,\u201d divorce attorney Paul Talbert told The Post. \u201cSpouses will get into these knock-down, drag-out arguments over old mugs, pots and pans, cheap dining room tables, and couches worth next to nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>While divorce remains a defining force in American life, more than 1.8 million people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/16\/8-facts-about-divorce-in-the-united-states\/\">split in 2023<\/a> alone \u2014 attorneys say that many settlements become something else entirely. <\/p>\n<p>A final battle for control, resentment, manipulation or revenge.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large alignnone\"><figcaption>Trivial items like toasters or old wooden spoons are not out of the question when emotions are high. <span class=\"credit\">NC Photo \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hanging framed in the conference room of his New York office, a sign reminds divorce lawyer James Sexton\u2019s clients, \u201cIt\u2019s not about the pasta,\u201d a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VnkHk9Wvp6E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the most iconic lines<\/a> in the Bravo-verse. In his practice, Sexton says that\u2019s what divorce settlements boil down to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very often not about pasta,\u201d Sexton told The Post. \u201cIt\u2019s about the thing under the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trivial treasures<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A yellowed sixth-grade yearbook that had been collecting dust in a filing cabinet became the focal point of heated letter exchanges after it \u201cdisappeared,\u201d Sarah Jacobs, a New Jersey-based divorce attorney, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs even recalled a client\u2019s dispute over a \u201cbeloved wooden spoon,\u201d allegedly a family heirloom \u2014 that no one used.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large alignnone\"><figcaption>Attorneys say pots, pans and even old yearbooks have been up for debate in heated divorces. <span class=\"credit\">Daniel J\u00c3\u00e2\u00a2dzura \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For some, the justification is practical \u2014 why buy something again? But, in reality, attorneys say, the disputes rarely involve money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one point, we were debating the value of a half-full bottle of dish soap that was left under the kitchen sink,\u201d divorce attorney Nicole Sodoma told The Post of a memorable case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI often find it\u2019s not about the object \u2014 it\u2019s about what it represents, or the outsized importance it takes on when your sense of fairness is being challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large alignnone\"><figcaption>What is known as the \u201cchump factor\u201d becomes a last-ditch effort to keep fighting with an estranged spouse. <span class=\"credit\">Aaron \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lifestyle<\/strong> clashes<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes the requests are about preserving a lifestyle that the marriage enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys describe clients fighting to retain access to private jet memberships, airline points, or even country club bonds \u2014 perks tied to a lifestyle that, by definition, is ending.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>In some cases, the fight becomes about shared spaces instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had people include provisions that their ex can\u2019t go to a certain restaurant ever again,\u201d Sexton said. \u201cIt\u2019s a place they used to go together \u2014 and the thinking is, \u2018I don\u2019t want to see you there if I still go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pets<\/strong> as pawns<\/h2>\n<p>In many divorces, pets <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/20\/media\/pets-should-be-regarded-as-family-members-in-divorce-cases-pennsylvania-bill-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">become the central point<\/a> of emotional warfare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI once had a multi-millionaire guy worth about $400 million in my conference room, look me in the eye, and he said, \u2018The dog is the ball,\u2019\u201d said Sexton.<\/p>\n<p>Other attorneys have seen similar dynamics play out. In one case, a couple spent more time testifying over the ownership of a small box turtle they found while camping than they did dividing the assets of their horses, which were worth over $1 million.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large alignnone\"><figcaption>Pets are such an emotional touchpoint that  there has been a rise in \u201cpetnups.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Pixel-Shot \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Brian Mayer, a family law attorney in California, told The Post of a settlement in which both parties would rather have custody of the golden retriever than their children.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>That emotional weight has led to a rise in so-called \u201cpetnups\u201d \u2014 agreements that determine animal custody arrangements before conflict escalates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPets are no longer considered mere property,\u201d said Debra Hamilton, a mediator and principal at Hamilton Law and Mediation PLLC. \u201cThey are family members, companions and emotional anchors.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Control freakouts<\/h2>\n<p>Lawyers agree that most of these asks, albeit extreme, usually boil down to control. Or the last opportunity to inflict pain on a former partner, with requests ranging from banning an ex from certain social spaces to dictating future relationships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen people try to impose restrictions on new dating partners, even requiring approval after a certain period of proving monogamous dating with that new partner,\u201d said Sodoma.<\/p>\n<p>Sexton has seen similarly extreme provisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re never allowed to discuss me with your cousin, or you have to take down every photo of us from social media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>It\u2019s never about the thing they\u2019re actually fighting over, especially a kitchen appliance, attorneys say. <span class=\"credit\">Harry \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At times, the goal isn\u2019t resolution \u2014 it\u2019s disruption.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Duane Cocker, a family attorney in Washington, told The Post of a couple who fought over a $40 shelf from Walmart. It became the final sticking point in the divorce \u2014 not because of its value, but because, as he put it, one spouse \u201cwasn\u2019t done fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other wanted it for a different reason: to burn it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why does it happen?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For people going through a split, sometimes the intention is simply to throw a grenade and watch what happens, and sometimes it\u2019s simply about delaying the inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>The behavior is actually not that surprising, some experts say.
