By the time Preston Mattingly was a teenager, his famous father had retired from baseball but still hung around the game. The Mattingly name is synonymous with certain things in this sport; as Don visited New York Yankees spring training in the early 2000s as a guest instructor and Preston accompanied him, the kid overheard a nickname he made his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would call him \u2018Cap,’\u201d Preston said. \u201cI don\u2019t think he loved that one.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was sometime around then that Preston basically stopped calling him \u201cDad.\u201d He was Don<\/em> because, of course, he was. He\u2019s Don Mattingly. \u201cSo I\u2019ve tried to keep that up as much as I can here,\u201d said Preston, the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. He always says Don<\/em> with a wry smile.<\/p>\n

But there was a moment this spring in Phillies camp when either president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski or manager Rob Thomson asked Preston to find Don, then the team\u2019s bench coach. Preston poked his head into the coaches\u2019 room.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey Dad \u2014,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, Don, can you come in here for a minute?\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Don is the interim manager of the Phillies. His son is the GM in title only. Dombrowski is the boss, overseeing all aspects of the big-league club, and Don reports to him.<\/p>\n

It is an unusual situation for the Mattinglys. Even a little awkward. But Preston and Don have come to appreciate how they arrived at this moment. They are believed to be the first father-son manager-GM combination in MLB history.<\/p>\n

They would rather talk about something else. Neither could have envisioned these circumstances. Preston, 38, had charted his own path \u2014 first in advance scouting and game planning with the San Diego Padres, then as the Phillies\u2019 farm director, with a rapid ascent to GM. And Don was convinced, following a heart-wrenching Game 7 loss<\/a> as the Toronto Blue Jays\u2019 bench coach to the Los Angeles Dodgers in last year\u2019s World Series, that his life in baseball had finally ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was it, right?\u201d said Don, who turned 65 in April. \u201cAnd then Dave calls, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh my God.\u2019 I felt like at that point, you just crashed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dombrowski told him the Phillies needed his help as bench coach. But when the Phillies made a managerial change last month, Mattingly was not Dombrowski\u2019s first choice to replace Thomson. He wanted Alex Cora, whom the Boston Red Sox had just fired. Cora turned down an aggressive overture from Dombrowski<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So, when the Phillies came to a resolution on April 27, Dombrowski turned first to Preston.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my decision,\u201d he told him. \u201cI know this is a unique situation. I don\u2019t want to put you in a tough spot. So this is my decision, and it\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don was doing his laundry when Dombrowski called.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been in this game long enough,\u201d Don said, \u201cand you get feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was convinced: Dombrowski was calling to tell him Cora was the new manager. \u201cIt was a little bit of a surprise,\u201d Don said. The shock hadn\u2019t evaporated by the time Preston called.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you ready for this?\u201d he asked his dad.<\/p>\n

Soon after Don\u2019s first win, Preston followed Dombrowski into the manager\u2019s office just as they did postgame when Thomson managed. Dombrowski runs the roster. He will solicit input from those around him, but in essence, Preston\u00a0functions like an assistant general manager. He is Dombrowski\u2019s shadow.<\/p>\n

In the office, they\u2019ll talk about the game that just ended. Maybe work through a roster move.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re making baseball decisions based on what they think is best for the club,\u201d Don said. \u201cBut there are moments when I can tell Press doesn\u2019t agree with something. Maybe everyone else can\u2019t. But I can tell when Press has got something to say about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It stems from decades of baseball talk between father and son. When Don became the Miami Marlins manager in 2016, Preston was just beginning his own front-office career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a pretty opinionated person,\u201d Preston said. \u201cWe disagree on a lot of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

When they were working for different clubs, Don would call Preston or vice versa, and the conversation would always shift to how Preston thought his father\u2019s roster could improve.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, this guy\u2019s on the wire,\u201d Preston would say. \u201cYou guys have to get him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got it, Press, I know,\u201d Don would respond. \u201cBut I\u2019m not the GM.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don will acknowledge it now; there were times when Preston floated a player\u2019s name and he\u2019d see it too. He might have gone to Mike Hill, then the Marlins\u2019 GM, with a suggestion or two inspired by Preston.<\/p>\n

Preston looks like a younger Don, without the mustache. They talk alike. They have the same mannerisms. They do not always view the game the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s probably a little bit more old school than me,\u201d Preston said. \u201cObviously, he came up in a different era. And he probably sees the best in players more than I do, which is a good thing for a manager.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Phillies\u2019 clubhouse and dugout, there hasn\u2019t been much talk about father and son. The team has won 11 of 15 games since making the managerial change. And everyone knows Dombrowski runs the Phillies. So it isn\u2019t an issue. It might be different if their last name wasn\u2019t Mattingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pretty simple,\u201d Don said. \u201cPretty straightforward. Not a lot of fluff. So, I\u2019m not that complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

For years, those roster conversations were what tied the Mattinglys together. Preston estimated that, in the last four years, he had spent maybe 10 days with Don. It\u2019s life in baseball, and it has always been complicated.<\/p>\n

There is a certain sadness associated with Don\u2019s career. A chronic back injury and family problems forced him to walk away in 1995 at age 34, having played in only five career postseason games \u2014 all of which came in that final season. He played between two glory eras of Yankees baseball; they made it to the World Series the year before Mattingly debuted and won it all the year after he retired. He managed the Dodgers and Marlins for 12 seasons but won a postseason series only twice. He\u2019s fallen short of election to the Hall of Fame on numerous tries.<\/p>\n

Preston\u2019s mother and Don divorced in 2007; he has since remarried and has an 11-year-old son named Louie with his second wife, Lori. Don has endured public anguish<\/a>, as it relates to his family. But this last act, something that\u00a0would have \u201creally been uncomfortable 20 years ago,\u201d is not weird, he said, because of how front-office dynamics have changed in baseball. He can work with his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like it,\u201d Don said. \u201cBecause I\u2019m comfortable. I think he\u2019s comfortable. I think the club\u2019s comfortable. I like working with him. Because you think about it, we\u2019ve been in different places fighting for a dream, right? And now we\u2019re together fighting for our dream. It\u2019s a lot better. And I get to see the granddaughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nora is 19 months old; she calls him \u201cPapa Don.\u201d She\u2019s walking now. Whenever the Phillies have a day off at home, Don goes over to Preston\u2019s house to babysit. Thinking of it, his eyes light up.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe relates,\u201d Don said. \u201cIt\u2019s \u2026 it\u2019s pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been special,\u201d Preston said. \u201cI know he really wanted to be a part of this team, but I don\u2019t know what percentage of it was, \u2018Hey, I get to see Preston a lot more and be around my granddaughter too.\u2019 You can tell he enjoys it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first few days were different for Preston. He always had a certain anxiety, even from afar, when watching teams his father managed. And there\u2019s no escaping the Mattingly name, which would follow Preston no matter what he did in baseball. He received text messages from peers across the league when his dad was promoted; they acknowledged what he felt. It was all a little awkward.<\/p>\n

Friends encouraged him to think about it in another way.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day,\u201d Preston said, \u201cyou\u2019re going to look back years from now and say, \u2018Hey man, you know how cool it was you got to work with your dad in high-profile jobs?\u2019 And you\u2019re going to remember that for the rest of your life. So I\u2019ve tried to kind of take that perspective of it. \u2018Hey, let\u2019s enjoy this while it\u2019s here.’\u201d<\/p>\n

A few days before Don was installed as interim manager, Preston called his father. The Phillies were in Atlanta; Preston was not with the team. A 10-game losing streak had tested everyone\u2019s resolve. So Preston just wanted to check in.\u00a0They spoke for a few minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had different things in my life, and you feel like they are just moments of clarity, almost,\u201d Don said. \u201cThings were going rough. I don\u2019t know. It was going bad. And I\u2019ve always been pretty good in those situations \u2014 like, I understand the length of the season. I\u2019m not going to get excited. I know we have a good club. There\u2019s a lot of baseball left. And, so, I don\u2019t know what caused it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It<\/em> was something Don had said that stuck with Preston. It caught Preston by surprise. He is not spiritual, and he was not certain what his father even meant. This whole thing has become a happy accident. Maybe it leads to something so unexpected. Maybe not.<\/p>\n

But his father couldn\u2019t help but think aloud.<\/p>\n

\u201cPress, maybe this is why I\u2019m supposed to be in Philadelphia,\u201d Don told his son. \u201cI feel like there is a bigger reason why I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
