\n An all-day prayer event on the National Mall on Sunday \u2014 backed by the White House through a mix of taxpayer funds and private donations \u2014 is\u202fthe most recent flashpoint in the Trump administration blurring separation of church and state.\n <\/p>\n

\n The event, dubbed \u201cRededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving,\u201d is part of a series of celebrations commemorating America\u2019s 250th birthday, and is expected to feature remarks from government officials including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson and video messages from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The event will bring together faith leaders, public officials and musicians to reflect and worship ahead of the anniversary of the nation\u2019s founding.\n <\/p>\n

\n Sunday\u2019s event is the latest in a series of faith initiatives and policy moves championed by the White House<\/a> that have bolstered an emphasis on Christianity in the government\u2019s operations,\u202fculture\u202fand policy.\n <\/p>\n

\n Freedom 250, a nonprofit subsidiary of the National Park Foundation, which functions as the National Park Service\u2019s\u202ffundraising\u202farm, organized the event.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cRededicate250 will be a powerful moment to reflect on where we have been, recommit ourselves to the ideals that define us, and look toward the future with renewed hope and purpose,\u201d said Freedom 250 senior adviser Danielle Alvarez.\n <\/p>\n

\n While organizers are inviting Americans of every background to attend the event, the\u202flong list<\/a>\u202fof faith leaders attending\u202fare\u202flargely evangelical Christians \u2014 except\u202ffor\u202fone Orthodox\u202frabbi and two conservative Catholic bishops. Brittany Baldwin, White House senior policy adviser and executive of the White House Task Force America 250, described a focus on \u201cour heritage as a\u202fJudeo-Christian\u201d nation in a since-deleted planning webinar that was posted ahead of Sunday\u2019s event.\n <\/p>\n

\n Experts CNN spoke with were split on\u202fwhether the event is constitutional.\n <\/p>\n

\n Andrew Koppelman, a professor at Northwestern University\u2019s Pritzker School of Law whose areas of focus include constitutional law, said while\u202fhe believes\u202fthe event itself is\u202fprobably\u202fconstitutionally\u202fprotected,\u202fit\u2019s\u202f\u201ccontrary to the fundamental purposes of the Constitution.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis kind of divisive embrace of a particular\u202freligion and trying to associate the incumbent administration with that religion is bad for religion, bad for government and bad for America,\u201d\u202fKoppelman said.\n <\/p>\n

\n But\u202fDouglas Laycock, who specializes in religion and law at the University of Texas School of Law, said he believes this event is \u201cflagrantly unconstitutional.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt is unconstitutional because it is explicit government promotion of religion, and not just religion in general, but of a fairly specific version of one particular\u202freligion,\u201d Laycock said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Meanwhile, Michael Mooreland, professor of law and religion at Villanova\u2019s Charles Widger School of Law,\u202fargued there can be an intersection of religious faith and the public square, noting the prayers at open sessions of Congress and at the presidential inauguration.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think that it\u2019s kind of overemphasizing that idea of separation to think that an event like this raises any constitutional problems,\u201d Mooreland said, adding that it\u2019s \u201ctoo strong a separationist view of what the First Amendment requires.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n White House\u202fspokeswoman\u202fTaylor Rogers told CNN in a statement that Rededicate 250 will be a \u201cbeautiful and unifying moment\u201d to reflect on America\u2019s history that has been shaped by \u201cgreat men and women of faith.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cRededicate 250 will be a fantastic event in our nation\u2019s capital to celebrate freedom of religion for all people of faith \u2014 a cornerstone of the sacred principles enshrined in our Constitution by the founding fathers. Americans will come together on the National Mall to rededicate this country as \u2018one nation under God,\u2019\u201d Rogers said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Critics say the Trump administration is trying to reinforce Christian nationalism \u2014 the belief that the US was founded as a Christian nation and should be governed by Christian principles.\n <\/p>\n

\n Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of\u202fthe\u202fReligious Action Center of Reform Judaism,\u202fargued\u202fthe term\u202fJudeo-Christian, which Baldwin used to describe the event, and which members of the Trump administration have repeatedly used to describe the nation\u2019s values,\u202fdoes not serve Christianity, Judaism or other religions in America.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cJudeo-Christian is often used as a mash up to co-op\u202fJudaism and subsume it within a triumphal view of Christianity and feeds right into a White Christian nationalist narrative,\u201d Pesner said at a media briefing ahead of Sunday\u2019s event.\n <\/p>\n

\n CNN reached out to the White House on criticisms about White Christian nationalism.\n <\/p>\n

\n Various Trump administration officials\u202fhave\u202frepeatedly tied the nation\u2019s founding to Christianity.\u202fDuring a National Prayer Breakfast event<\/a> this spring, Hegseth declared \u201cAmerica was founded as a Christian nation.\u201d In one video\u202fpromoting Sunday\u2019s\u202fevent,\u202fthe defense secretary\u202fsaid<\/a>, \u201cOur founders knew two simple truths: Our rights\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fcome from government, they come from God, and a nation is only as strong as its faith.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n But some historians disagree. Gregg Frazer, a professor of history and political studies The Master\u2019s University, a Christian college in California, wrote in an online paper\u202fthat<\/a> while there were Christians among the Founding Fathers, \u201cthey did not intend to create a Christian nation.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey were religious men who wanted religion \u2014 but not necessarily Christianity \u2014 to have significant influence in the public square,\u201d Frazer wrote.\n <\/p>\n

\n The US Constitution\u2019s First Amendment says that \u201cCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Other critics of the event, including Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, have characterized \u201cRededicate 250\u201d as a \u201cgovernment run-church service\u201d on the National Mall that many Christians\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fagree with.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s meant to establish this administration\u2019s narrow view of Christianity as the American religion,\u201d Laser said at a media briefing. \u201cI can imagine that our founders\u202fare rolling over in their graves.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n A spokesperson for Freedom 250 told CNN the US has a long history of public prayer, dating to the Second Continental Congress<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n Hegseth in February invited a controversial self-described Christian nationalist pastor who supports repealing women\u2019s right to vote<\/a> and who believes homosexuality should be a crime to lead a worship service at the Pentagon as part of a monthly prayer series he started.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Pentagon is one of several government agencies<\/a> that have moved to open meetings with a prayer, host regular\u202ffaith services, and post Bible verses and Christian imagery on social media since\u202fTrump returned to office last year.\n <\/p>\n

\n In April, Trump, alongside members of his Cabinet and faith leaders, participated\u202fin a\u202fmarathon reading of the Bible<\/a>, as part of a weeklong event\u202foffering<\/a>\u202fwhat its organizers described as a \u201cspiritual celebration\u201d of the country\u2019s 250th anniversary.\n <\/p>\n

\n Earlier that month, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins sent a \u201cChrist is risen\u201d Easter message<\/a> to employees, sparking backlash inside the department, angering some of its\u202fnearly\u202f100,000\u202femployees\u202fand prompting a formal complaint against the secretary.\n <\/p>\n

\n A union\u202frepresenting\u202ffederal employees, including those at the Department of Agriculture, filed a lawsuit<\/a> against the agency and Rollins last week over the Easter email, seeking to prevent the secretary from \u201cfurther communicating proselytizing Christian messages to USDA subordinates.\u201d When asked for comment on the lawsuit, a USDA spokesperson told CNN, \u201cWhile we do not comment on pending litigation, we will keep the plaintiffs in our prayers during this process.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n A spokesperson for Freedom 250 told\u202fCNN\u202fthe\u202fgroup puts on signature events for\u202fthe\u202fnation\u2019s\u202f250th\u202fanniversary using private and public dollars.\n <\/p>\n

\n Last year, Congress\u202fallocated\u202f$150 million toward the 250th\u202fin the \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill Act.\u201d Asked how much money the group is spending on Rededicate 250, CNN was not given a clear answer.\n <\/p>\n

\n While Freedom 250\u2019s setup means that it does not have to disclose its donors, Jeff Reinbold, president and CEO of the National Park Foundation, told lawmakers at a hearing in February that the foundation would disclose any donations to Freedom 250 as part of its normal reporting, unless anonymity is requested by the donor.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAny donations to Freedom 250 follow our normal donation procedures,\u201d he said, adding that the donors\u202fare also vetted by the National Park Service.\n <\/p>\n

\n As the country prepares to turn 250, Robert P. Jones, president and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute, said his research shows Americans are embracing the view of a religiously diverse country.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere is great diversity, not only in the country, but I would say \u2026 within Christianity itself, and I think that\u2019s worth noting, and the thing that\u2019s really quite absent if you look at this event,\u201d Jones said.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
