He will succeed former President Michael Schill, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2025\/09\/04\/campus\/university-president-michael-schill-resigns-amid-painful-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">resigned from the position<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in September 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interim President Henry Bienen, who first served as University president <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2025\/09\/24\/campus\/from-trouble-at-home-to-global-expansion-a-glimpse-inside-henry-bienens-first-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from 1995 to 2009<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2025\/09\/09\/top-stories\/henry-s-bienen-announced-as-interim-president-of-northwestern-following-schill-resignation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">returned after Schill stepped down<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will remain in the role until the end of June, the release stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chiang has been the president of Purdue University, a fellow Big Ten research institution, since January 2023. A first-generation immigrant, Chiang is set to be NU\u2019s first Asian American president, according to the release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have long admired Northwestern for its dedication to interdisciplinary scholarship, artistic creation and impactful research, its tremendous healthcare system, and its palpable school spirit,\u201d Chiang said in the news release.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chiang graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering and mathematics, as well as a master\u2019s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From 2017 to 2023, he served as dean of Purdue\u2019s College of Engineering. He was also Purdue\u2019s executive vice president for strategic initiatives from 2021 to 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before his tenure at Purdue, Chiang spent 14 years<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at Princeton University, becoming one of the school\u2019s youngest chair professors.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He chaired the Princeton Entrepreneurship Council and served as director of the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both Bienen and Schill also have Princeton ties. Bienen previously served as dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schill graduated from Princeton with an AB in Public Policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMung has his sights set on advancing and enhancing Northwestern among the world\u2019s great research institutions,\u201d Board of Trustees Chair Peter Barris<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said in the news release. \u201cThrough his stellar academic and administrative leadership at multiple institutions, Mung has demonstrated his ability to harness opportunity and momentum while embracing the breadth and depth of a university.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Purdue, Chiang\u2019s initiatives included securing $3.9 billion in investments to construct an artificial intelligence memory chip packaging facility. He also helped design and implement the 2022 federal CHIPS and Science Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chiang was the first engineer to serve as science and technology adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State, a nonpartisan position to which he was appointed in 2020,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to the release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NU <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2025\/12\/17\/campus\/northwestern-launches-search-for-universitys-18th-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced the launch of its search<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the University\u2019s 18th president in December. Board of Trustees Vice Chair Steve Cahillane chaired the Presidential Search Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn my many conversations with Mung through the search process, he consistently has emphasized how he views Northwestern as one of the world\u2019s most eminent comprehensive universities, at which the interdisciplinary culture drives innovation and new ideas,\u201d Cahillane said in the news release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chiang\u2019s appointment comes after a year in which NU faced intense federal scrutiny, culminating in a November <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2025\/11\/28\/campus\/northwestern-strikes-deal-with-trump-administration-to-restore-federal-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">deal with the Trump administration to restore research funding<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after the government <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailynorthwestern.com\/2025\/04\/08\/top-stories\/federal-government-freezes-790-million-in-funding-for-northwestern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">froze $790 million in April 2025<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NU\u2019s interdisciplinary nature is what attracted Chiang to the University, he said in the release.
