.<\/em><\/strong>\n <\/p>\n\n Stephen Colbert is going out with a smile \u2014 and with many jokes at CBS and its parent company Paramount\u2019s expense.\n <\/p>\n
\n Colbert is signing off \u201cThe Late Show\u201d this week as CBS ends the iconic late-night TV franchise.\n <\/p>\n
\n Many \u201cLate Show\u201d fans are disappointed, even angry, about the cancellation, doubting CBS\u2019s rationale for the decision and believing that appeasement politics toward President Trump are at play.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cI have every right to be pissed off,\u201d Colbert\u2019s predecessor, David Letterman, said during a farewell visit to the show last week.\n <\/p>\n
\n But while others are outraged on his behalf, and the audience continues to litigate the show\u2019s end, Colbert remains positive and radiates gratitude.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cI\u2019ve really liked working with CBS,\u201d he recently told The New York Times. \u201cThey\u2019ve been great partners. And I\u2019d like to end it that way\u2026 I feel so much better to be \u2018grateful for\u2019 than to be \u2018mad about.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Colbert\u2019s primary concern, as he has indicated in other interviews, is about the \u201cLate Show\u201d staff, who will be out of work after Thursday night\u2019s finale.\n <\/p>\n
\n The promotional listings for the final week contain some clues about the show\u2019s plans.\n <\/p>\n
\n Monday\u2019s episode will be \u201cthe worst of \u2018The Late Show\u2019 with Stephen Colbert,\u201d according to the CBS press release, which notes that it is \u201cnot a clip show,\u201d meaning Colbert has some new material in store.\n <\/p>\n
\n Tuesday\u2019s episode will feature two A-list stars, Jon Stewart and Steven Spielberg, plus a \u201cspecial performance by David Byrne and Stephen Colbert.\u201d Spielberg is starting a press tour for his new movie \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d and Stewart is a longtime friend and producing partner of Colbert\u2019s.\n <\/p>\n
\n Wednesday\u2019s episode will include a performance by Bruce Springsteen and a special edition of \u201cThe Colbert Questionert,\u201d a recurring Q&A segment on the show.\n <\/p>\n
\n And Thursday\u2019s finale will be a surprise: no guests or segments are being promoted in advance.\n <\/p>\n
\n Colbert\u2019s chief rivals, ABC\u2019s \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d and NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,\u201d will both run reruns on Thursday night.\n <\/p>\n
\n In a podcast taping with Kimmel, Fallon, Seth Meyers and John Oliver last week, Colbert alternated between sentimental and sarcastic about the end of his show.\n <\/p>\n
\n He also shared that \u201cmy son graduates college on the 18th; my show ends on the 21st; my brother gets married on the 23rd. So, I\u2019m kind of sandwiched between things that are, like, a little more important \u2014 like, you know, a little perspective.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Colbert, 62, has said little about his public-facing plans after \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d though he is attached to be a writer on a new \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d movie, a dream gig for one of TV\u2019s biggest Tolkien fans.\n <\/p>\n
\n As for the whodunit aspect of his show\u2019s cancellation, Colbert told The Times, \u201cIt\u2019s possible that two things can be true.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n When CBS announced last July that this season of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d would be the last, the network said it was \u201cpurely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n But the timing raised plenty of eyebrows. At the time, Paramount was trying to win Trump administration approval for its merger with Skydance Media, and the company had just settled President Trump\u2019s lawsuit against CBS News, even though legal experts deemed the suit frivolous. On the air, Colbert likened the settlement to a \u201cbig fat bribe.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Then came news of the cancellation, though it had apparently been in the works internally for weeks. Numerous Democratic officeholders raised questions about whether Colbert was axed for political reasons. After all, it\u2019s nearly impossible to separate Colbert the comedian from Colbert the Trump critic.\n <\/p>\n
\n Trump, of course, celebrated Colbert\u2019s cancellation and hoped Kimmel would be fired next, though ABC has ignored the president\u2019s many pleas to sever ties with Kimmel.\n <\/p>\n
\n When asked about Trump, Colbert told The Times, \u201cAuthoritarians don\u2019t like anybody who doesn\u2019t give them undue dignity. Comedians are anti-authoritarian by nature. And authoritarians are never going to like anybody to laugh at them.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThe Late Show\u201d will be replaced right away: Starting Friday, the time slot will be filled by \u201cComics Unleashed with Byron Allen,\u201d a comedy talk show that bears little resemblance to Colbert\u2019s production.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cComics Unleashed\u201d abstains from topical humor because the episodes are designed to be replayed later. This means the show lacks the political commentary that Colbert fans love.\n <\/p>\n
\n It also lacks a band, a desk or the other trappings of classic late-night TV shows. Instead, the show features Allen and a rotating panel of comedians who tell jokes and riff on more universal topics.\n <\/p>\n
\n Comedians sometimes treat \u201cComics Unleashed\u201d like a punchline. But it already airs after \u201cThe Late Show\u201d on CBS stations, and now it will move to the 11:35 p.m. time slot through a \u201ctime buy,\u201d in which a producer leases a time slot from a network and recoups costs by selling ad time during the show.\n <\/p>\n
\n Allen hasn\u2019t said how much he is paying CBS for the time slot, but he has depicted it as a win-win. He told TheWrap that CBS will save \u201capproximately $150 million+ per year just on production and marketing\u201d by replacing \u201cThe Late Show\u201d with \u201cComics Unleashed.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n In an interview with CNN\u2019s Michael Smerconish, Allen positively cast the evergreen nature of his show, saying, \u201cWe don\u2019t need the politics. I don\u2019t care who you vote for. I don\u2019t care. I\u2019m here to make people laugh.\u201d\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
