Then Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who voted to convict Trump at his 2021 impeachment trial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/16\/politics\/louisiana-senate-primary-results-bill-cassidy-julia-letlow-john-fleming\">finished third in his primary<\/a> Saturday and failed to even make the runoff after the president endorsed a challenger.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo3zfm000d3b6rxz3idn8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now Trump will try to complete the set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/14\/politics\/thomas-massie-kentucky-republican-primary-donald-trump\">by defeating Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky<\/a> in a primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo4bxm000f3b6ry3ovfrr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The race is especially big for a couple reasons.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo4dej000h3b6rmkz1vgdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One is that Trump has targeted Massie with a remarkable amount of vitriol. That\u2019s after Massie played a leading role in forcing the release of the Epstein files, but it also comes after he\u2019s bucked Trump on a number of other issues. For a president like Trump who demands loyalty, defeating Massie would be more than symbolic \u2013 it would likely install one more reliable Republican vote in the House next year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo4ifx000j3b6r9r25vvl9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The race is also looking like it will be the most expensive House primary in history, with pro-Israel groups chipping in to defeat Massie and pushing overall spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/17\/massie-aipac-record-spending-israel-maga-trump-primary-00925375?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it\" target=\"_blank\">north of $30 million<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo4qu6000l3b6rguysuzbe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Massie has proven pretty resilient in the past. He\u2019s regularly been targeted by primary challengers, and they haven\u2019t come close. In the Trump era, there have been a handful of politicians who have been able to craft strong personal brands independent of Trump, and Massie is one of them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo4zx1000n3b6rovgryj03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There probably hasn\u2019t been a Trump-targeted House primary this significant since Liz Cheney\u2019s lopsided 2022 loss. But while Cheney lost a lopsided race, Massie is thought to at least have a shot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo5d1p000r3b6rd3a5u12v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking of people who have crafted successful brands in today\u2019s GOP, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp might be at the top of the list.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo5m1b000t3b6rvogtq8ho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He destroyed Trump-backed Sen. David Perdue by more than 50 points in a 2022 primary after Trump targeted Kemp for refusing to go along with his claims of massive voter fraud.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo5t3x000v3b6reye7mv6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/18\/politics\/brian-kemp-georgia-senate-gop-primary\">Kemp gambled big<\/a> when he decided to endorse former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley, who had never run for office before, for Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo5u6h000x3b6rs3cwbcf2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dooley faces more MAGA-aligned Reps. Mike Collins and Buddy Carter in the primary to face Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. Andy Barr is clearly favored to win the GOP nomination for retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell\u2019s seat after the Trump administration gave one of the other candidates an ambassadorship to get him out of the race. Barry Moore is in a competitive race against Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall in the race for Sen. Tommy Tuberville\u2019s seat. (Tuberville is running for governor.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo7awd001b3b6rnao4jdlu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latter two races could well be headed to runoffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo7h50001d3b6rmy0jxyxl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s very rare that Trump-backed candidates lose primaries. But it can happen. And even as Trump appears to be successfully exacting revenge in other places, it\u2019s notable that some GOP voters don\u2019t seem to be taking their cues from him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo7vov001h3b6rvl8epaih@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While most of the key races Tuesday will be primaries, it\u2019s also worth keeping an eye on a pair of statewide general election races in Georgia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo80cg001j3b6rjnnnyo9b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats will try to flip a pair of state Supreme Court seats by defeating conservative-backed incumbents with liberal challengers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo80cg001k3b6rtn36c3i4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The races are technically nonpartisan, but as in other states like Wisconsin, they\u2019ve effectively become partisan contests. Former President Barack Obama has endorsed the challengers, while Kemp has spent money trying to save the incumbents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo80cg001l3b6rhvttjmrh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The races won\u2019t determine the balance of the court, which currently leans 8-1 conservative, but it could give liberals a chance at flipping it in 2028.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo80cg001m3b6ri5fotdkf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And if nothing else, the races could say something about the national political environment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo80cg001n3b6rwtbswt8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two of the more shocking upsets of 2025 came in November when Democrats flipped a pair of statewide seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo80cg001o3b6r7kcj68ue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They were not only the first statewide constitutional offices Georgia Democrats had won since 2006, but the Democratic candidates won each of them by 26 points.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo8u6t001s3b6r02le4d5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Few Democrats have as much buzz surrounding their name ahead of the 2028 presidential contest as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. And Shapiro\u2019s reelection bid this year is looking likely to be rather uneventful.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo8v20001u3b6rb3y6iyah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So Shapiro isn\u2019t just looking to win; he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/24\/politics\/josh-shapiro-democrats-us-house-races\">looking to help his party to major wins in Pennsylvania<\/a> this year and hopefully to win control of the state legislature so he can notch some signature achievements.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo8v20001v3b6rpjicx3f4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps the biggest test for Shapiro on that front Tuesday is if he can help get firefighter union head Bob Brooks through a competitive and crowded primary field in the swingy 7<sup>th<\/sup> Congressional District, currently held by GOP Rep. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. But Shapiro figures especially large on his campaign \u2013 to the point where a loss would be a significant setback for the governor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo9nrm00233b6rujbo4cu0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, Georgia stood out as perhaps the one state where Republicans like Kemp really stood up to Trump\u2019s false voter fraud claims \u2013 and then, in the 2022 primaries, lived to tell the tale.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo9onq00253b6ro3yx1a4l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kemp, Raffensperger, Carr and then-Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan all declined to toe Trump\u2019s line, and the first three all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/05\/25\/georgia-texas-primaries-takeaways\/\" target=\"_blank\">managed to win primaries<\/a> against Trump-backed opponents. (Duncan didn\u2019t seek reelection.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo9onq00263b6rz9cemawp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it\u2019s looking like all of the big names who stood up to Trump could soon be out of office.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo9onq00273b6r4gati2nb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kemp is term limited. Raffensperger and Carr are polling as also-rans in the GOP gubernatorial primary, and Duncan\u2019s attempt to switch parties and run in the Democratic primary for governor hasn\u2019t exactly gone to plan. He\u2019s a big underdog against former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in a crowded field.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbo9onq00283b6rnd74wzhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kemp could still have a career in front of him, especially if he runs for president. But if these lawmakers can\u2019t even extend their careers in Georgia, that says a lot about what really standing up to Trump does to your political prospects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpboa2c5002c3b6rwuatcur2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking of Bottoms, she appears to be the front-runner in the Democratic primary for governor. The AJC poll showed her with a big lead in the primary over Duncan, former state Sen.
