The <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US30Y\/\">30-year Treasury<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> yield briefly topped 5.19% on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/19\/treasurys-yields-inflation-traders-fed-interest-rates.html\">for its highest level in nearly 19 years<\/a>. The\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US10Y\/\">10-year Treasury<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0note yield \u2014 a critical gauge for mortgage and auto loans and credit card debt \u2014 rose to 4.687% at one point, marking its highest level since January 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rate increases come after a series of reports last week showing inflation was revving back up as the war in Iran lifted oil prices. Higher rates on things like credit cards and mortgages rates could curb consumer spending. Meanwhile, the rise in rates could temper long-term economic growth and expose the sky-high valuations seen recently in some chip stocks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bond vigilantes are at play right now,&#8221; said Will McGough,\u00a0chief investment officer at Prime Capital Financial. &#8220;Everybody&#8217;s on to energy prices staying higher, which could lead into inflation that&#8217;s behind the curve a little bit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bond vigilantes are institutional investors who sell off government bonds to signal their disapproval of inflationary U.S. monetary policies. <\/p>\n<p>McGough added that investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/18\/the-fed-will-have-to-raise-interest-rates-in-july-to-appease-bond-vigilantes-yardeni-says.html\">could be sending a message<\/a> that the Federal Reserve is behind the curve on inflation ahead of Kevin Warsh&#8217;s swearing in as chairman of the central bank on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s this narrative that new Fed chairmans tend to get tested by the markets,&#8221; McGough told CNBC. &#8220;You could see the bond vigilantes were obviously testing him here, if you believe that theme.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Crude prices were down slightly on Tuesday after President Donald Trump announced late Monday that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/18\/trump-iran-attack-saudi-uae-qatar-deal.html\">calling off a plan to attack Iran<\/a> after the heads of three regional powers in the Middle East asked him to &#8220;hold off.&#8221; U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@CL.1\/\">West Texas Intermediate\u00a0futures<\/a>\u00a0for June delivery shed 0.82% to settle at $107.77 per barrel. Meanwhile, international <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@LCO.1\/\">Brent crude\u00a0futures<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> for July delivery fell 0.73% and settled at $111.28 per barrel. <\/p>\n<p>Later in the session, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/u-s-seized-iran-linked-oil-tanker-in-the-indian-ocean-704f5f3c\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> seized overnight an oil tanker linked to the Islamic Republic in the Indian Ocean, according to three U.S. officials who spoke with The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-12\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\">Nvidia<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which reports its fiscal first-quarter earnings after the bell on Wednesday, closed down nearly 1%. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-13\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/QCOM\/\">Qualcomm<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> ended the session off nearly 4%, while <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-14\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AVGO\/\">Broadcom<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> pulled back 2%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a well-deserved breather after an epic rally,&#8221; Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, told CNBC.
