Cubs<\/a>-Brewers clash for control of the National League Central just another series in mid-May?<\/p>\n\u201cThere\u2019s definitely some big series in September,\u201d Cubs outfielder Ian Happ <\/b>said before the three-game set opened Monday night at Wrigley Field. \u201cYou maybe have a group coming in who you\u2019re close to in the divisional race or close in the standings.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut early in the season \u2014 I know there\u2019s going to be a lot made of this series \u2014 it\u2019s another series of baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cubs might think that way, but don\u2019t tell the Brewers, who brought their big bats south to remind everyone they\u2019re still the three-time reigning division champs. With a 9-3 pummeling of their rivals in the teams\u2019 first meeting of the season, they struck a familiar blow \u2014 several, in fact \u2014 against Cubs starter Shota Imanaga<\/b>, bringing to mind the beatdowns they handed out last October when they knocked out the Cubs.<\/p>\n
In Game 2 of the NL Division Series, Imanaga allowed four runs and two homers and was gone after just eight outs. Monday was worse. The Japanese southpaw was tagged for eight runs and nine hits, including a pair of moonshot homers off the right-field video board. He lasted 4\u2009\u201e innings, a rare 2026 clunker.<\/p>\n
\u201cShota just didn\u2019t have a good night,\u201d manager Craig Counsell<\/b> said. \u201cHe just didn\u2019t have real good command \u2014 the command that he usually has. .\u2009.\u2009. It was, frankly, not being able to put the ball where he wanted to put it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through an interpreter, Imanaga gave this assessment: \u201cOverall, their game plan overcame my skills.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hasn\u2019t that so often been the case for the small-market Brewers in their recent matchups with the Cubs? Even with the Cubs\u2019 offseason spending and World Series goals, it was still Brewers on top.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Brewers are the team that\u2019s won the division for the last three years \u2014 that\u2019s what we want to do,\u201d Counsell said. \u201cLast year, they beat us, and they had a fabulous season. We\u2019ve got to improve to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fixing Phil<\/h3>\n
Reliever Phil Maton <\/b>was perhaps the biggest addition as Jed Hoyer\u2019s<\/b> front office remade the Cubs\u2019 bullpen last winter. But so far, he has been a big bugaboo on a pitching staff that already has no shortage of question marks.<\/p>\n
Maton, whose two-year, $14.5 million contract makes him the highest-paid member of the relief corps, coughed up the go-ahead three-run homer Sunday in the eighth inning of the Cubs\u2019 loss to the White Sox, his latest bumpy outing. It was the sixth time in 14 appearances this season he has allowed more than one run.<\/p>\n
The 10-year veteran had figured to be reliable, with a 3.33 ERA across his previous four seasons. Instead, he has a 9.49 ERA midway through his second month as a Cub.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m incredibly frustrated,\u201d Maton said Monday. \u201cYou\u2019re brought over here, and there\u2019s a lot of responsibility to not only pitch well but get the game going in the right direction. And I feel there\u2019s been lots of situations where Craig\u2019s trusted me in tight ballgames and I just haven\u2019t gotten it done. That\u2019s the hardest part.\u201d<\/p>\n
Counsell said it\u2019s a matter of restoring Maton\u2019s confidence so he can deliver in the types of situations the Cubs envisioned when they added him.<\/p>\n
\u201cPhil got burned by some off-speed pitches earlier in the season, and it\u2019s made him a little gun-shy with some of his best pitches,\u201d Counsell said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get him back to full confidence in his full repertoire.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
