Harrison Ford<\/a>, Henry Winkler, Tom Brady, Lindsey Vonn and Eric Church, who all delivered commencement speeches at college graduations this spring.<\/p>\nHoda shared lessons she has learned from her own humble beginnings in television, recalling how she persevered in the face of rejection and made the most of opportunities when they presented themselves to her, as she scratched her way into the business when she still had a lot to learn.<\/p>\n
She ended her speech by playing Frank Sinatra\u2019s \u201cTheme from New York, New York,\u201d reminding graduates that, like the song says, if they can make it there, they can make it anywhere.<\/p>\n
Read on for a transcript of Hoda\u2019s full speech.<\/p>\nHoda Kotb delivered Fordham University’s 2026 commencement address. <\/span>TODAY<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nI\u2019m so happy to be here. I am so happy to be here. I want to say thank you to (Fordham) President (Tania) Tetlow. I love Tania deep in my soul. I\u2019ve known her for many, many years, and I\u2019m so happy to be here with you, distinguished faculty, families, loved ones, and students, the graduating Class of 2026. Hey-oh! <\/em><\/p>\nOK, I\u2019m proud of you. I looked back, and I was trying to remember who my commencement speaker was. No idea. I mean, maybe I was hot, like all the people sitting on the side. Maybe I was a little hungover. I don\u2019t know what it was, but I do not remember who they were. But the truth is I\u2019m going to try to give you guys a couple of life lessons to take with you, alright?<\/em><\/p>\nNo. 1: Raise your hand if you have a job. Showoffs! OK, good for you, good for you. Raise your hand if you do not have a job. OK. I want to say something to you guys: Do not worry, OK? When I graduated college, I did not have a job. I had a single interview. All my friends were bragging about benefits, vacation time. I had none of that.<\/em><\/p>\nMy plan was: I was going to drive an hour from my house to a television station close by in Richmond, get a job, come home, pack my stuff. So I said to my mom, \u201cMom, can I borrow your car? I\u2019m going to drive to Richmond. I\u2019m going to get a job.\u201d She goes, \u201cGo for it.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\nI roll up to Richmond, I meet the news director. I\u2019m like, \u201cYou know what, I\u2019m going to work here. I can feel it.\u201d I hand him my resume tape. He puts it in the machine. He plays it and he stops it. He says, \u201cHoda, my God, you are so not ready for Richmond. I mean, you are green and inexperienced. You know, good luck, bye bye.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nAnd as I was walking out, I was like, \u201cWow, this is not good.\u201d And the guy says, \u201cWait, wait, wait. I got a buddy of mine who\u2019s hiring in Roanoke, Virginia, three hours from here. If you drive now, I bet you he\u2019ll hire you. Do you want me to call him and tell him you\u2019re coming?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\nAnd I said, \u201cYes, call him and tell him I\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nI called my mom. \u201cHow is Richmond?\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cMom, I don\u2019t want Richmond. Man, I want Roanoke. I am driving to Roanoke.\u201d I drove three hours, got to Roanoke. The news director took my tape, put it in the machine, played it, stopped it, and said, \u201cHoda, you are so not ready for Roanoke.\u201d I was like, \u201cWho in the hell is not ready for Roanoke? My God, but OK.\u201d He\u2019s like, \u201cI want to wish you good luck.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nAnd as I was leaving, he said, \u201cI have a buddy of mine who\u2019s hiring in Memphis, Tennessee. If you leave now and catch him, I bet you he\u2019ll hire you.\u201d I drove across the great state of Tennessee. I handed my tape to that guy. He put it in, he stopped it, and he said, \u201cI don\u2019t know why they sent you here. You are so not ready for Memphis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nI was in the car, driving, getting rejected over and over and over. I got rejected in Birmingham, ABC, NBC, CBS. Does anyone know where Dothan, Alabama is? OK, good for you. I got rejected in Dothan, too, and then throughout the whole southeastern United States, OK? At the end of it, 27 rejections, 10 days, and my mom needed her car back, so I started driving home depressed. <\/em><\/p>\nI had messed my life up, chose the wrong major. You know how they say God gives you a sign? It was a sign that said, \u201cGreenville, our eye is on you, CBS,\u201d with like a CBS eye. I was lost in Mississippi, and I was going to go to that station, get a map after my rejection, and go home. <\/em><\/p>\nI walked in that place. It was a short little guy named Stan Sandroni, and he said, \u201cHey, I\u2019m Stan Sandroni, I\u2019m news director. You know. I was sports director yesterday, and they promoted me.\u201d I was like, \u201cOK.\u201d He\u2019s like, \u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d I go, \u201cHoda.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\u201cCome on in, Hilda, let\u2019s look at that tape.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\nHe took my resume tape, he played it, and he watched it. He watched the worst tape in the history of the universe, and when it was over, Stan looked at me, and he said, \u201cHilda!\u201d And I said, \u201cYes.\u201d He said, \u201cI like what I see.\u201d And I exploded in tears and realized this first life lesson, guys: You don\u2019t need everyone to love you, you just need one. Find your Stan, find the one person who believes in you. OK, you\u2019re going to find Stan. <\/em><\/p>\nLesson No. 2: If you\u2019re not ready and an opportunity knocks, take the opportunity anyway, OK? I was working in Mississippi, working on a story. Girl Scouts need more leaders. And Stan came in and he said, \u201cWho has a blazer?\u201d \u201cSay what?\u201d \u201cWho has a jacket?\u201d I go, \u201cOh, I do.\u201d \u201cGood, because you need to anchor the news, because Ann is sick.\u201d Like, OK. So the litmus test for who anchors the news in Greenville, Mississippi, is whoever showed up to work with a blazer. I\u2019m like, \u201cOK, I got it.\u201d I had never done it before. I was ill-prepared. I was not ready.<\/em><\/p>\nThe teleprompter read this: \u201cGood evening, I\u2019m Hoda Kotb. Ann Martin is out sick.\u201d Ann was the queen of Greenville. I was terrified. I\u2019m sitting there, I\u2019m like, \u201cCome on, girl, you can do it.\u201d All of a sudden, the red light flashes, and I read, \u201cGood evening, I\u2019m Ann Martin.\u201d I was like, \u201cOh, shoot, I just said I wasn\u2019t my very own name to this group.\u201d I went through that newscast, worst in history, and at the very end of it, I thought to myself, \u201cWell, that\u2019s it, I\u2019m fired, and it\u2019s over.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nI walked to the grocery store to get something to eat, Ho Hos, Twinkies, fill your soul. As I was there, this lady came running at me, and she looked at me, and she said, \u201cOh my god, I just seen you on TV. I felt so sorry for you.\u201d I was like, \u201cOh my god, this is the worst ever.\u201d I went back the next day, expecting to get fired, and Stan said to me, \u201cWell, I saw what you did. It was horrible, but Ann is sick again, so, you want to give it one more go?\u201d I was like, \u201cOne more go.\u201d If you\u2019re not ready, do it anyway.<\/em><\/p>\nLesson No. 3: Figure out what you love and find a way to get paid for it. Simple. Figure out what you love and find a way to get paid for it, OK? Here\u2019s a case in point here. There was this guy named Ken Bering, and he wanted to make a lot of money and buy a lot of stuff. He made a lot of money. He bought a house. He bought a car. He bought jewels for his wife. After a few months, he was unhappy again. He said, \u201cYou know what I need? I need more stuff.\u201d So he said, \u201cOK.\u201d So he bought a bigger house, a bigger car, bigger stuff. A few months later, that wore off. He wasn\u2019t happy then, either. So he\u2019s like, \u201cYou know what I need? I need different stuff.\u201d This guy bought the Seattle Seahawks football team. He was on the field, fist bumping, and just being all up in there, and after six months he realized he was still not happy.<\/em><\/p>\nThen something happened. A friend of his said, \u201cCome with me to Bosnia. I\u2019m going to deliver a bunch of wheelchairs. Do you want to come?\u201d And he said, \u201cSure.\u201d So he goes to Bosnia. They are setting up wheelchairs, and one by one, they are hoisting these disabled people, and putting them in the chairs, one by one. So he picks up one person, a third one. The fourth one grabs his wrist, and Ken says to the young man, \u201cAre you OK?\u201d And the man says, \u201cYeah, I just want to memorize your face, so that the next time when I see you in heaven, I can say thank you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nIt was in that moment that Ken Baring found his purpose, his truth. So, lesson No. 4: Work for a cause greater than yourself. And I know you guys are doing that. <\/em><\/p>\nLesson No. 5: Don\u2019t use your phone as an alarm clock. Don\u2019t do it. You know why? This is you: (Yawns). \u201cOh my god, the world\u2019s falling apart.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s on sale.\u201d \u201cOh my god, look at my friend.\u201d Don\u2019t do it. Go to Best Buy, buy an alarm clock, take your shower, brush your teeth, get your coffee. Let the world in when you are ready The world\u2019s trying to break into your life, right? Let it in when you\u2019re ready.<\/em><\/p>\nLesson No. 6. Your trip\u2019s not someone else\u2019s trip. Don\u2019t worry about who\u2019s next to you. Don\u2019t worry about if they get promoted before you. Don\u2019t worry about if they get a house first. You run your race, OK? All of my blessings happened after 50. I know it sounds weird, all of them. I got the job of my dreams at the TODAY show. I got the family I\u2019ve dreamt of. I have two kids now. Your blessings come when they come, and they come right on time. Some people get all their blessings in their 20s. So sad, but some people get them later, so wait, because your blessings are definitely coming. <\/em><\/p>\nLesson No. 7: Life is where you fix your gaze. Whatever you look at, that\u2019s what you\u2019re going to be.<\/em><\/p>\nI interviewed Sheryl Lee Ralph, who is this great actress. Girl, \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d? I love her. Don\u2019t you love her? OK, so Sheryl Lee Ralph says this to me. She won an Emmy, star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, all that stuff. And she told me a story about when she was a young actress, and she said Robert De Niro said this to her, these words. He said, \u201cSheryl Lee Ralph, you are a magnificent actress. It\u2019s too bad there are not roles for black women. I mean, what a shame. What a pity.\u201d And I said, \u201cOh God, that must have hurt.\u201d And she goes, \u201cWhy?\u201d I said, \u201cBecause of what Robert De Niro said.\u201d And she said, \u201cRobert De Niro said I was a magnificent actress.\u201d Full stop. Where do you fix your gaze?<\/em><\/p>\nLesson No. 8: Learn the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness is going to the club. Happiness is \u201cIt\u2019s my birthday.\u201d Happiness is in Tahiti. Joy is when you open your eyes in the morning, and you\u2019re at peace with who you are, where you\u2019re going, and who\u2019s with you. Remember, try to always find joy. <\/em><\/p>\nAlright, guys. Lesson No. 9, we\u2019re bringing it home. Lesson No. 9. Look at your hands. Graduates, look at your hands. Those are the hands that your parents held when you were learning to walk. Those are the hands that held the handlebars of your first bike. They\u2019re the hands that held the crayons and the pencils and the pens and the backpacks. They\u2019re the hands that moved all your stuff into Fordham, and those are the hands that are going to hold the diploma soon. So, do me a favor. Yeah. Turn around, just blow a kiss to your loved ones back there with that hand, blow a kiss to your moms, your grandmas. I saw lots of grandmas and grandpas here today, your aunts and uncles, and then when you carve out your new life, guys, use those hands to do something else.<\/em><\/p>\nWhen you\u2019re in your own apartment, you\u2019re in your own city, use those hands to dial the phone and call the people who brought you, whether it\u2019s your mother, your dad, your grandma, your aunts \u2014 call them because they\u2019ve been standing on the sidelines with two pom poms your whole life. Just let them know how you\u2019re doing. <\/em><\/p>\nOur last lesson, kids, is this: Believe in your ability to make it anywhere. You belong in every boardroom, every mountaintop, every C suite. There is a song. How does it go? What is it? Oh, if you can make it there, you\u2019ll make it anywhere. Hold on, hold on. Come on, girl, let me find it. Spotify is not as easy as it used to be.
