He&#8217;s thriving on TV instead."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"flex border-b border-solid items-center justify-between mb-6 pb-5 border-b-neutral-light-charcoal-gray\">\n<div class=\"relative flex items-center gap-2 self-stretch \"><button class=\"audio-paywall-trigger bg-transparent flex gap-2 items-center cursor-pointer\"><span class=\"font-grot10 text-3.5 font-semibold not-italic leading-4 text-primary\">Listen to article<!-- --> <span aria-hidden=\"true\">\u2022<\/span>\u00a0<time>0:00<!-- --> min<\/time><\/span><\/button><button type=\"button\" aria-label=\"Feedback\" class=\"bg-transparent cursor-pointer flex\" aria-expanded=\"false\"\/><audio><track kind=\"captions\" class=\"hidden\"\/><\/audio><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">After <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/avalanche\/news\/erik-johnson-announces-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/avalanche\/news\/erik-johnson-announces-retirement\">retiring from the NHL<\/a> in October, longtime defenseman Erik Johnson almost took a job in the Flyers\u2019 front office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But Johnson, 38, who spent parts of his final two NHL seasons in Philadelphia, knew that general manager <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/danny-briere\">Danny Bri\u00e8re<\/a> and team president <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/keith-jones\">Keith Jones<\/a> would wait a year for him if he wanted, so he decided to  accept an offer  from ESPN, looking at it as a one-year trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">If he hated television, he could start working with the Flyers the next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cKeith Jones actually reached out to me after he heard one of my games, and he said, \u2018Don\u2019t do anything else. You\u2019re right where you\u2019re supposed to be,\u2019\u201d Johnson told The Inquirer. \u201cFor as long as he did TV, that was a good compliment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Johnson\u2019s rise from calling local Colorado college hockey to becoming one of the primary color analysts on ESPN started in 2024 at the NHL\u2019s broadcast boot camp. The training  was a new NHL initiative that year to help teach NHL players the basics of television and introduce them to local and national broadcasters and executives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">NBC Sports Philadelphia\u2019s Ashlyn Sullivan was one of the instructors and led a seminar on becoming a rinkside analyst. Even just from working with Johnson on the Flyers broadcasts, she noticed two things that few did: He always used her name when answering a question, and he would stay put until the interview ended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI\u2019m so grateful [the players] give us our time, period, but normally they just run off, which isn\u2019t the best look on TV because you\u2019re standing there awkwardly,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cE.J. always would stay in place, stay put until we went to commercial break, and hold his gaze into the camera. Read expert opinions and vote.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Even when Johnson was a healthy scratch or playing few minutes for the Flyers, he gave his time to the social media team and to the broadcast, Sullivan said \u2014 although Johnson himself joked that he was always the guy trying to avoid doing media. But Sullivan knew before he started the camp that Johnson had the right personality and approach for TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cYou just know with some players that they\u2019re going to be good at this, and Erik was always that,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cHe was so charismatic. He\u2019s got so much personality. \u2026 He gets it. He gets what hockey is trying to do, which is to add more personality to this and make hockey players more marketable to fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Now, deep into his first year calling playoff hockey, Johnson is a \u201cnatural\u201d on television, said play-by-play man Bob Wischusen. \u201cThere was hardly any learning curve with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Johnson and Wischusen had never met before they were paired together in January as part of ESPN\u2019s NHL coverage. Wischusen said it feels like they\u2019ve known each other for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe can goof on each other, and you very quickly realize that he\u2019s someone that\u2019s going to give it back as good as he gets, so we have laughs in that way,\u201d Wischusen said. \u201cI think it\u2019s accelerated the relationship a few steps down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">As a former player with over 1,000 career games, Johnson has  that ability to break down the action for fans who possibly never played, Wischusen said. But he does it without dumbing down the product too much for those who have played.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI\u2019m asking a lot of questions I already know the answers to, but I have to ask them, because I know a lot of people that are watching don\u2019t know,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThat\u2019s a hard part as well. The No. 1 overall draft pick in 2006, he already was well-known across the league, which provides a level of comfort to players and coaches he\u2019s interviewing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">So it\u2019s no coincidence that Johnson is responsible for some of the best TV moments this season, whether it was him <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/6ErikJohnson\/status\/2043185950235496503?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/6ErikJohnson\/status\/2043185950235496503?s=20\">chirping former Flyers coach John Tortorella<\/a> or getting <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Avalanche\/status\/2017704099391910092?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Avalanche\/status\/2017704099391910092?s=20\">his allegedly fake tan criticized<\/a> by former teammate Nathan MacKinnon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Despite those personal relationships, Johnson said it isn\u2019t hard to separate his friendships from the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI know when a mistake is made \u2014 and I\u2019ve made all those mistakes \u2014 so if I see it, I\u2019m going to say it,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the same time, if they make a great play, I\u2019m going to see it and say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE:<!-- --> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/flyers\/rick-tocchet-coach-exit-interview-matvei-michkov-power-play-20260513.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Rick Tocchet talks power play, Matvei Michkov\u2019s \u2018vengeance tour,\u2019 and more at his end-of-season media availability<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Occasional constructive criticism hasn\u2019t impacted how beloved Johnson is around the league. The difference now is that a new audience of hockey fans gets to see why. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cHe\u2019s the best guy ever,\u201d Flyers defenseman <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/jamie-drysdale\">Jamie Drysdale<\/a> said. \u201cI\u2019d imagine he\u2019s one of the most-liked teammates among the league. He\u2019s got the face for it, he\u2019s freshly got the smile for it, new teeth, new hair, fake tan \u2014 he\u2019s unreal. He\u2019s got the good suits.
