The hospital tested the patient for the most common form of the virus connected to almost all previous outbreaks in the DRC, the Zaire strain, but the tests <strong>were negative<\/strong>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000s3b6ucc9h81ia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The patient died <strong>May 5.<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000t3b6umgd1yq5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unaware that the patient had Ebola and that exposure to the body could make people sick, the DRC\u2019s health ministers told reporters Saturday that mourners thought the death was caused by a mystical illness and gathered for a funeral.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000u3b6umgqfd2r6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mourners in the region traditionally touch the dead as part of the grieving ritual. The family will also typically wash the body and dress it for burial. The body had been transferred back to Mongbwalu from the hospital and put in a coffin for burial, but more people were exposed when the family chose to go without a coffin, Ancia said. Often, coffins are in limited supply, and the person will be wrapped in a traditional cloth instead, according to local custom. \u201cThey changed the coffin. And then there was the funeral, and it\u2019s from there it started,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000v3b6u1cv3to3m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It wasn\u2019t until later, when the patient\u2019s samples were sent on to Kinshasa, that <strong>additional tests<\/strong> showed that they had been sick with the Bundibugyo strain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000x3b6un4c0k3ea@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first cases of Ebola disease were identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ebola\/outbreaks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">in 1976<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercycorps.org\/blog\/ebola-outbreaks-africa-guide\/chapter-2\" target=\"_blank\">two concurrent outbreaks<\/a> that started in Sudan and in the DRC, then known as Zaire. Scientists believe that humans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercycorps.org\/blog\/ebola-outbreaks-africa-guide\/chapter-2\" target=\"_blank\">first got sick<\/a> with Ebola after being exposed to infected animals like fruit bats and monkeys, often by eating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ebola\/media\/pdfs\/2024\/05\/Bushmeat-FactSheet-h.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbushmeat,\u201d<\/a> raw or minimally processed meat from wild animals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000y3b6u7y3of0dk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The largest outbreak was in West Africa in <strong>2014-16. <\/strong>More than 28,600 cases were reported, but only 15,261 were confirmed; there were more than 11,000 deaths.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj000z3b6u73d9np17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There was another large outbreak in the DRC in <strong>2018-20,<\/strong> with 3,481 cases and 2,299 deaths in the DRC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/situations\/Ebola-2019-drc-\" target=\"_blank\">according to WHO.<\/a> A few cases were also reported across the border in Uganda.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj00103b6uggn6ui2l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The DRC has officially had 17 outbreaks since 1976, with the most recent being last year.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj00123b6u2nk52rdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although it\u2019s rare, scientists consider Ebola a severe and often fatal disease that affects humans and primates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj00133b6ultgn2o00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The case fatality rates vary from <strong>25% to 90%,<\/strong> according to WHO. With the first known outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain <strong>in 2007,<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/democratic-republic-of-congo\/news\/democratic-republic-congo-confirms-new-ebola-outbreak-who-scales-upsupport\" target=\"_blank\">case fatality rate was 32%<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj00153b6uzmjs6gl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People in this outbreak are testing positive for the Bundibugyo strain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj00163b6uyo3qyfae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are <strong>six known strains<\/strong> in the genus Ebolavirus, <strong>three<\/strong> of which have caused large outbreaks. Scientists first identified the Bundibugyo strain <strong>in 2007<\/strong> in Bundibugyo district of Western Uganda, a region along the border of the DRC. Bundibugyo is known to have caused <strong>two other documented outbreaks: <\/strong>the 2007 outbreak and a second in the DRC in 2012.<strong><em\/><\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpd9jbrj00173b6ulibj6l7m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bundibugyo is believed to <strong>replicate more slowly<\/strong> and appears to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0042682210001881\" target=\"_blank\">slower<\/a> to disable immune cells than other strains, research shows, and that may account for why outbreaks related to this strain have been <strong>less lethal<\/strong>.
