{"id":137208,"date":"2026-05-23T08:36:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T11:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/burned-out-gen-z-and-millennials-are-taking-adult-gap-years\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T08:36:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T11:36:15","slug":"burned-out-gen-z-and-millennials-are-taking-adult-gap-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/burned-out-gen-z-and-millennials-are-taking-adult-gap-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Burned-out Gen Z and millennials are taking adult gap years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>They\u2019re packing their bags and leaving hustle culture behind. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGap years,\u201d once taken solely by college grads who yearned for an intentional break between graduation and full-time work to figure out their lives, are being redefined by today\u2019s burned-out Gen Z and millennials, who are desperately seeking an out from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/31\/lifestyle\/gen-z-loses-it-nyc-workers-flee-9-to-5-for-cry-rooms-and-nap-pods\/\">corporate grind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With some strategic planning and saved-up money, working young adults, like Julia Fei, 29, are swapping the<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/10\/lifestyle\/gen-z-is-ghosting-their-jobs-and-ditching-bosses-survey-finds\/\"> grindset mindset <\/a>for \u201cadult gap years\u201d or \u201cmini-retirements\u201d to keep their sanity. <\/p>\n<p>The stressed-out data scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/31\/lifestyle\/gen-z-loses-it-nyc-workers-flee-9-to-5-for-cry-rooms-and-nap-pods\/\">was over the 9-5 grind<\/a> as soon as she was flung into it seven years ago. She quickly saw how rapidly her industry was changing, driven by advances in AI, and she wanted out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of changes at work with AI and with tech movement, and I saw a vision for myself and an opportunity to do something and build something of my own,\u201d the former Manhattanite shared with The Post. \u201cI really did like my job, but it just felt like a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe only have five to 10 years left of a tech job as we know it today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Julia Fei is one of many young adults taking breaks from the daily grind.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After carefully budgeting and squirrelling away money for the last several years, the 29-year-old \u201ctook a leap of faith\u201d two months ago and quit her cushy, well-paying job without a backup plan.<\/p>\n<p>Fei said she also took her gap year to be closer to her parents, who retired in Guangzhou, China. \u201cI do support their retirement, and the cost of living is so much cheaper there,\u201d she pointed out. \u201cI\u2019m here right now just spending time with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She dips into her savings when needed, but living with her parents and subleasing her pricey NYC studio apartment keeps her expenses to a minimum.<\/p>\n<p>Although the company Fei worked for was \u201cvery supportive\u201d of her plan, she said she\u2019s hesitant to return to the rat race but plans to spend her time off conceptualizing her own tech product while growing as a content creator, a side hustle that has now become her primary source of income.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Fei is hoping to create something of her own while spending time with family during her \u201cadult gap year.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While this break from the humdrum grind most adults have no choice but to deal with might sound luxurious from afar, it comes with its challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The ex-tech worker struggles with the lack of routine she once loathed. She said that taking online grad school classes helps, but any adult who has moved back in with their parents knows how stifling it can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just little things where I\u2019m obviously very independent at 29, living by myself, but they treat me like a kid,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n<p>And as an \u201cimpatient person,\u201d Fei said she\u2019s anxiously waiting to see what comes of her life in this next chapter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I need to prove something out of this gap year\u2026 right now I think there\u2019s just a lot of internal pressure from myself to perform,\u201d she confessed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Fei spent years preparing for this massive life change.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s that mindset shift that\u2019s like, this is scary, and I don\u2019t know how to operate in such an ambiguous environment. Now I\u2019m in full control of what I\u2019m doing and where I\u2019m going,\u201d Fei explained to The Post. \u201cBut I\u2019m excited to be a little bit bolder and riskier. At the end of the day, I want to say I gave this my best shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Risky is exactly what taking an adult gap year is \u2014 but financial strategist and founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beyondthegreencoaching.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond The Green Coaching<\/a>, AJ Schneider, believes that with some planning, anyone can do it.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cGetting your finances in order\u00a0is so you can\u00a0take huge leaps of faith in your life. It is not only so you can retire, buy a home, and make money in your sleep. It\u2019s so you can say,\u00a0\u2018I am unhappy, and I\u2019m\u00a0safe to leave,&#8217;\u201d she told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>To take an adult gap year, Schneider advises to \u201cStart making cuts to your daily lifestyle to increase savings.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery dollar you save\u00a0is going to fund you in the future, get\u00a0excited about what you\u2019ll be able to do with that money,\u00a0versus\u00a0feeling like your instant needs are more important,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of how much you should save?  \u201cFigure out where you want to go, work with ChatGPT on how much you think it\u2019ll cost you based on flights, accommodations,\u00a0food,\u00a0activities and\u00a0divide that amount by\u00a0how many\u00a0months you have to save.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fei is among a slew of people her age who are seeking a life reset. Astaggering 74% of Gen Z and millennials admitted to experiencing moderate to high levels of burnout, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/research\/publications-reports\/survey-reports\/the-2024-nami-workplace-mental-health-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/adultgapyear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#adultgapyear<\/a> on TikTok has thousands of videos of youngsters ranting about hustle culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHustle culture is going to be the downfall of this generation,\u201d one creator pointed out in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sneaknurse\/video\/7294400672152177962?q=hustle%20culture&amp;t=1779398671640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viral video<\/a>. While another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@gracie_norton\/video\/7158898994691771691?q=hustle%20culture&amp;t=1779398671640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that she used to view being busy as \u201can aspirational status symbol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tammy Armstrong, 31, a former medical secretary, used to have this same warped mindset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been working in my job for 10 years and it was becoming increasingly monotonous. I felt like I was living the same day on repeat,\u201d the Scotland-native told The Post.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Tammy Armstrong ditched her demanding job at her local hospital for a life of exploration and travel. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Tammy Armstrong<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to feel freedom again\u2026 I wanted to be pushed out of my comfort zone and hopefully come to some realization of what I want to do with my life,\u201d she explained. \u201cI also wanted to calm my nervous system and live more slowly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To embark on her gap year in January 2025, Armstrong worked extra hours and followed a strict budget, sacrificing her social life and her beloved beauty treatments. <\/p>\n<p>She told The Post that she finds part-time jobs wherever she temporarily calls home and stays in budget-friendly hostels, hotels and campsites, as well as local accommodations when traveling with volunteer groups.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Armstrong\u2019s gap year has allowed her to slow down.  <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Tammy Armstrong<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While working, \u201cevery day was urgent, but urgent for matters that aren\u2019t of my own,\u201d she explained, but these days, Armstrong allows herself to stop and smell the roses. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been hard to let go of a routine and not to feel guilty for having slower days.
