US-based <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MU\/\">Micron Technology<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SNDK\/\">SanDisk<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> have each advanced 141% and 156% in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Central to the thesis underpinning the bull run in memory stocks is the belief that the industry has shaken off its past cyclicality, whereby demand for storage fluctuates significantly while supply remains largely fixed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/11\/memory-stocks-ai-chips-demand.html\">Executives have argued<\/a> that AI has upended the industry&#8217;s history of boom and bust, and a structural supply shortage means that prices could stay high for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108309533\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108309533\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000413480\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>William de Gale, portfolio manager at BlueBox Asset Management, told CNBC&#8217;s Europe Early Edition on Wednesday that the industry tends to have &#8220;enormous ups and downs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the long run it&#8217;s a pretty dreadful industry,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I suspect that&#8217;s still the case every time people make an argument that the memory cycle is gone, and it&#8217;s now a long-term value-creating industry \u2013 just before it all goes horribly wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108311594\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108311594\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000413910\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108311609-Thumbnail_Explain_AI_Stock_Boom_V7.jpg?v=1779687926&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Why the AI boom is reshuffling the global stock market hierarchy\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>New innovations<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Though memory chip<strong> <\/strong>supply is extremely constrained at present, Alphabet&#8217;s Google on March 24 unveiled TurboQuant, a new compression method, which it says could reduce the amount of memory required to run large language models by six times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is designed to make AI models more efficient, a major goal of the leading labs.<\/p>\n<p>Such developments have the potential to slash demand for AI memory chips, which have been a critical component to train up huge LLMs from companies like Google, OpenAI and Anthropic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deutsche Bank wrote in a Tuesday note that investors should &#8220;continue to brace themselves for continuous AI-related disruption&#8221;, as evidenced by TurboQuant, which caused a sharp decline in the share price of the biggest memory providers upon its release.<\/p>\n<p>The analysts added, however, that it &#8220;remains to be seen&#8221; whether the TurboQuant technique will create a structural shift in demand.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Cunliffe, head of investment office at wealth manager JM Finn, told CNBC that there is scope for production to increase meaningfully over the next three years, easing supply constraints, &#8220;especially if AI demand grows at a more normal pace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s share prices assume that prices stay high for a long time, companies stay very disciplined about not over\u2011investing, and profit margins remain much better than in the past,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d also highlight that the sector has experienced a high degree of momentum crowding in recent weeks, which has made it vulnerable to a shakeout.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though forecasting when memory supply could exceed demand is an impossible task, investors must exercise caution when investing in an industry with &#8220;historically average returns on capital that is priced to make very high returns in future&#8221;, according to Andrew Lapping, chief investment officer at Ranmore Fund Management. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A leopard does not often change its spots,&#8221; Lapping said of the potential for a structural shift in the memory sector. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>South Korean concentration risk<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Samsung and SK Hynix are responsible for sending South Korea&#8217;s Kospi to stratospheric heights across 2025 and 2026.
