{"id":139516,"date":"2026-05-26T00:28:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T03:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/magnitude-6-0-earthquake-on-hawaii-island-shakes-the-state-no-tsunami-generated\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T00:28:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T03:28:24","slug":"magnitude-6-0-earthquake-on-hawaii-island-shakes-the-state-no-tsunami-generated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/magnitude-6-0-earthquake-on-hawaii-island-shakes-the-state-no-tsunami-generated\/","title":{"rendered":"Magnitude 6.0 earthquake on Hawaii island shakes the state; no tsunami generated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">HONAUNAU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; No tsunami is expected following a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that occurred about seven miles to the east-southeast of Honaunau in the South Kona area of Hawaii Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 9:46 p.m. It was centered about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napoopoo area along the western flank of Mauna Loa, at a depth of 14 miles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was generated by the earthquake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A second, weaker magnitude 3.2 earthquake occurred six minutes later, just to the northwest of the first about 13 miles beneath the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the earthquakes were not directly related to volcanic activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe depth, location, and recorded seismic waves of the earthquake suggest that it was caused by stress due to bending of the oceanic plate from the weight of the Hawaiian island chain,\u201d HVO said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The USGS also said there have been several more aftershocks, but smaller than magnitude 3. More aftershocks will be possible in the coming days but are unlikely to be large enough to be felt or cause damage. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-item | figure media-item-image article-image w-100\">\n<div class=\"figure-wrapper img-wrapper figure-img\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"figure-caption mt-1 px-1\"><span class=\"caption-text\">This USGS map shows where residents felt the earthquake, with some reporting very strong shaking near the epicenter.<\/span><span class=\"caption-credit\">(USGS)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The HVO also said more than 2,500 residents and visitors submitted \u201cfelt\u201d reports to the<a href=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/hv74966427\/tellus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/hv74966427\/tellus\"> USGS website for the event<\/a> by 11 p.m. Friday. That number grew to more than 5,800 responses by 2 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Former Hawaii News Now reporter Lacy Deniz described the violent shaking and damage inside her home in Honaunau on Hawaii Island \u201clike something out of a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt was quite terrifying. It was very violent,\u201d Deniz said. \u201cOur house was literally shaking from side to side, and I think the scary part was the duration too. It lasted for quite a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Deniz said the shaking was so strong, her mother had to shield her young son as glass came out of cabinets and fell to the floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThank goodness my mom was here,\u201d she said. \u201cMy son was crawling on the floor, so my mom had to stand over my son and shield him because all the glass was coming out of the cabinets and falling on the floor. So she literally was getting hit by all of our dishes and trying to protect my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Deniz said she and her family ran out of the home and, aside from some cuts, no one was seriously hurt. But walking through the house, the damage was significant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cEverything is on the floor. Glass is broken, all of our cabinets are open, our toilet cracked, armoire with our clothes, shelves, drawers, it just, it\u2019s on its side and just toppled over,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Hawaii News Now received reports of strong shaking felt across the state as far away as Omao and Hanalei on the island of Kauai.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Residents also reported strong shaking on Oahu in Kailua, Ewa Beach and Kapolei, and HNN received calls from Makawao and Wailuku on Maui.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The U.S. Geological Survey says in the last 50 years, there have been 35 other earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater within 60 miles of Friday night\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">There also have been larger earthquakes, including a 7.7 Kalapana earthquake in November 1975. The quake and a resulting tsunami claimed two lives and injured 28 people, and caused $4.1 million in property damage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">More recently, the magnitude 6.7 earthquake beneath Kiholo Bay off the northwest coast of Hawaii island in October 2006 was felt statewide. It caused minor injuries, damaged roads and at least 1,000 buildings and triggered landslides. Geologists said this was also a deep lithospheric earthquake caused by the weight of the islands. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><i>Copyright 2026 Hawaii News Now.
