Badfinger were a quartet of British musicians whose name and debut single under that moniker \u2014 the Paul McCartney\u2013penned \u201cCome and Get It\u201d \u2014 had been selected by the Beatles themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In early 1971, they were riding high on \u201cNo Matter What,\u201d a top-10 hit in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and several other countries. What they needed was a hit album to follow it up.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"elk-f8940213-5a29-4f6c-96eb-85c689f88b02-2\">The result would be <em>Straight Up<\/em>, the Rundgren-produced album widely regarded as the British quartet\u2019s finest, thanks in great part to its two big hits: \u201cBaby Blue\u201d and \u201cDay After Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-2 pb-0 mb-4\">\n        <span class=\"&#10;            flex&#10;            after:content-[''] after:flex-1 after:ml-4 after:my-[0.7rem] after:border-t after:border-solid after:border-t-[#ccc]&#10;            before:content-[''] before:flex-1 before:mr-4 before:my-[0.7rem] before:border-t before:border-solid before:border-t-[#ccc]&#10;            font-article-heading pb-0 text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,1em)] uppercase sm:text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,0.875em)] font-bold&#10;        \"><br \/>\n            You may like<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>But as Rundgren explains, getting there was anything but straightforward. Emerick had coproduced Badfinger\u2019s previous album, <em>No Dice<\/em>, which included \u201cNo Matter What.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the new sessions failed to satisfy Apple\u2019s American arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently the distributor was not satisfied with it,\u201d Rundgren tells <em>Guitar Player<\/em>. \u201cThey didn&#8217;t think they could promote it, or didn&#8217;t hear a single or something, and said, \u2018Okay, start over.\u2019 So the band started over with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/george-harrison-guitar-legend\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/george-harrison-guitar-legend\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/george-harrison-guitar-legend\">George Harrison<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-PWEE9XDrQXMH4ee8BKdEKA\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-PWEE9XDrQXMH4ee8BKdEKA slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">All the latest guitar news, interviews, lessons, reviews, deals and more, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Harrison approached the project roughly six months after releasing his own landmark solo effort, <em>All Things Must Pass<\/em>. Production began in May, but Harrison was soon swept up in organizing the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/five-storied-guitars-from-george-harrisons-concert-for-bangladesh\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/five-storied-guitars-from-george-harrisons-concert-for-bangladesh\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/five-storied-guitars-from-george-harrisons-concert-for-bangladesh\">Concert for Bangladesh<\/a> after his friend Ravi Shankar brought the humanitarian crisis to his attention.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"elk-b783a9d1-53fb-48bb-b6e7-469acf1aced4\">\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>They got maybe five songs in and George got completely involved in the Concert for Bangladesh. I think we lifted a couple tunes from that,\u201d he says. \u201c\u2018Flying\u2019 was one of them. Then the George Harrison tunes \u2014 we used some of those, although most had to have parts re-recorded. It all sounded like Phil Spector. Do whatever you want with it. Use it or don&#8217;t use it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially he had no time to shepherd it. Although critics were lukewarm at the time, the album would eventually come to be regarded as Badfinger\u2019s finest work. \u201cBaby Blue\u201d would enjoy a a massive cultural resurgence in September 2013 when it was used in the final scene of the hit series <em>Breaking Bad<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their remarkable good fortune to land in the Beatles\u2019 orbit, Badfinger were plagued by disastrous management. Pete Ham died by suicide in 1975, followed by Tom Evans eight years later.<\/p>\n<p>Rundgren didn\u2019t have an opportunity to revisit the album with Harrison in the years that followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had reason to run into him, even though I was spending a lot of time in Hawaii,\u201d he explains. \u201cI would always come out to Kaua\u02bbi, and he lived on Maui, I believe.
