\n\u201cWild,\u201d the latest album by Ashley McBryde, collects songs she had written over the years but never released.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

NEW YORK \u2014 A few years ago, Ashley McBryde fell off the horse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a figure of speech, sadly,\u201d the country star told The Associated Press. \u201cI was really, really badly hurt, and it was a bad enough injury that there was a chance that I wouldn\u2019t have been able to perform ever again.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was 2021. She was riding in Montana, and fell, landing on her head. The accident \u2014 so severe that she ended up in an emergency room \u2014 resulted in a concussion and stitches to her scalp. At the time, she couldn\u2019t walk without assistance.<\/p>\n

In the years since, McBryde thought about all of the songs she and her band rip through on stage but hadn\u2019t yet committed to record. \u201cWhat if I keep letting them not be on records? What if something had happened and now somebody never hears \u2018Water in the River\u2019? Somebody never hears \u2018Rattlesnake Preacher.\u2019 Somebody never hears \u2018Creosote\u2019 because I let myself be discouraged in this way or that way from putting those on the record?\u201d<\/p>\n

And so \u201cWild\u201d \u2014 her new album produced by John Osborne and recorded with her live band Deadhorse \u2014 became their home.<\/p>\n

Heading into the \u201cWild\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The live tracks that gave birth to \u201cWild\u201d are barn burners, a rowdy good time. So, McBryde knew she needed to find a way to strike some balance. She pursued divination practices like reading runes, going to a tarot reader, doing anything and everything she could to have her fifth album reveal itself to her. The answer was in the experimentation, a \u201cplayful, curious\u201d writing process with her band.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more we looked at the songs that we had felt like playing \u2014 and doing a good job of delivering \u2014 (we found they) were true stories about my life,\u201d she recognized. \u201cIt\u2019s terrifying to be known.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s also cathartic \u2014 as is the realization that \u201cwhatever it was that I was going through, I\u2019m not unique. There\u2019s nothing I\u2019ve been through that most of us haven\u2019t been through or are going to go through,\u201d McBryde explains. \u201cIt\u2019s not about me, it\u2019s about us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Getting deep<\/strong><\/p>\n

McBryde\u2019s last album, 2023\u2019s \u201cThe Devil I Know,\u201d had a rebellious streak to it \u2014 as does \u201cWild\u201d and the bulk of her discography. When critics said something \u201cwas too rock, we turned that up. They said something that was too country, then we put a toothpick in its mouth. And I think by the time we got to \u2018Wild,\u2019 I didn\u2019t care anymore. It was that level of defiance,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s none of my business. My job is to make sure these songs get heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

She calls this album her most rock \u2018n\u2019 roll \u2014 sonically, like what is found on the first four tracks \u2014 and emotionally, embodying her fiery spirit on the cutting treatise on domesticity, \u201cLines in the Carpet,\u201d the heartfelt mission statement of the title track and everywhere in-between.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes the wild call out to you from a distance?\u201d she starts her first chorus on \u201cWild.\u201d Then, the revelation: \u201cDo you miss the fire and the freedom? \/ When there wasn\u2019t anything keeping \/ You from being wild.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people out there with natural ability and there are people that dedicate every waking hour to honing their craft. Ashley is both,\u201d Osborne said in a press statement. \u201cNever settling. Always reaching. The perfect combination of vulnerable and fearless.\u201d<\/p>\n
