\n\tOlivia Rodrigo<\/a> just lived out the ultimate teenage fantasy: First you sing a song for Robert Smith about how miserable you are, then he gives you a hug. The pop queen and the Cure legend teamed up for a shocker duet at her surprise weekend set at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, doing their collaboration from her new album, with the very Robert Smith title, \u201cWhat\u2019s Wrong With Me?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat a beautiful moment of cross-generational goth bonding. The Eighties gloom god was positively beaming with pride and joy, standing beside her to sing this great new tune he helped inspire. Who hasn\u2019t dreamed about making a list of all your problems so you can ask Robert Smith what\u2019s wrong with you? And who hasn\u2019t dreamed of Robert singing your words back to you, assuring you that it\u2019s gonna be okay? Here\u2019s to Olivia for making that fantasy real. You seem pretty sad for a goth so in love.<\/p>\n

\n\tOlivia obviously wasn\u2019t kidding when she kept saying how deeply her new tunes were inspired by the Cure. At Primavera, she sang her superb Number One hit \u201cDrop Dead,<\/a>\u201d with the line, \u201cYou know all the words to \u2018Just Like Heaven,\u2019 and I know why he wrote them,\u201d then she sang a duet with the man who wrote them. And oh yeah \u2014 in between, she did another song literally called \u201cThe Cure<\/a>.\u201d What a righteous rock-star friendship this is. It\u2019s the grooviest thing, it\u2019s a perfect dream.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Robertrigo duet was a sequel to their moment last summer at England\u2019s Glastonbury Festival<\/a>, almost a year ago. \u201cHe\u2019s probably the best songwriter to come out of England!\u201d Liv announced, as Smith strolled onstage, a surprise that nobody saw coming. After they sang, she called him \u201cthe coolest, nicest, most wonderful man ever.\u201d They did \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d and \u201cFriday I\u2019m in Love,\u201d while she wore a t-shirt that said, \u201cYou know all the words to \u2018Just Like Heaven\u2019\u2026or do you\u201d? It would take everyone nearly a year to figure out where that line was headed, when she dropped \u201cDrop Dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIf you\u2019re relatively new to the Cure, it\u2019s key to keep in mind that Robert Smith almost never<\/em> does things like this. Not in the Eighties, not in the Nineties, not now. It just doesn\u2019t happen. He\u2019s always been generous and gracious with younger artists, but he shies away from public cosigns like this. Seeing him get up at a damn festival and sing somebody else\u2019s song? A shock to behold. But it\u2019s a measure of his respect and admiration for Rodrigo as an artist.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s Wrong With Me?\u201d sounded just right for these two melancholy voices. \u201cI went to the doctor and she said I was fine,\u201d they sang. \u201cTried meditation with a bottle of wine\/It\u2019s like somebody put a weight on my chest\/I should talk to a friend, but I can\u2019t get out of bed\/My head is spinning and my stomach is sick.\u201d Yeah, this girl has definitely been listening to the Cure. The whole vibe of the song is basically, \u201cYou know all the words to \u2018Disintegration,\u2019 and I know why he wrote them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs always, Rodrigo gets the tiny details right. Love the way she sings about how she can\u2019t leave her bed, which is a very Robert Smith dilemma, since he\u2019s always been so fond of lines like \u201cI wish I\u2019d stayed asleep today\u201d or \u201cmust have been asleep for days.\u201d Indeed, her symptoms are so close to his in \u201cClose to Me,\u201d this duet amounts to a consultation with a specialist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOver the years, Smith has done only a select handful of collaborations with his acolytes, such as Chvrches, the Twilight Sad, Crystal Castles, Gorillaz, and Tweaker. He appeared on a Billy Corgan solo record to sing a bizarre Bee Gees cover; he also did a guest spot for Blink 182, proof of his sense of humor. And Mick Jagger just announced that Smith sings back-up on the new Rolling Stones album, Foreign Tongues<\/em> \u2014 probably the only thing the Stones album will have in common with Olivia\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut these Robertrigo duets are a rare and touching sight. She\u2019s a lifelong Cure obsessive \u2014 who can forget the footage of her in the car, rocking out to \u201cBoys Don\u2019t Cry\u201d? She\u2019s a worshipful fangirl who\u2019s always looked up to Robert Smith, gazing at him onstage in awe. Yet when they teamed up at Glastonbury, for longtime Cure fans, the strangest part was how happy he was, grinning from ear to ear\u2014not something you see every day. It was so poignant to see him having so much fun. After Glastonbury, she posted a photo of them backstage\u2026downing shots. It was the last sight you\u2019d ever expect, which is why it was awesome.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut a year later, they were back to do her<\/em> song. \u201cIt\u2019s my first collaboration!,\u201d she told the Primavera crowd on Saturday, letting the tension build before revealing her guest. \u201cI am just so proud of it \u2014 I can\u2019t believe that this song exists, with the person it exists with. I\u2019m just so fucking overwhelmed!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tNobody knew it was Robert until he came out to sing the second verse, although we all should have guessed from the in-joke when she sings \u201cI\u2019m staring at the ceeei-<\/em>ling.\u201d (The Cure\u2019s greatest-hits CD was Staring at the Sea<\/em>.) It\u2019s the fourth new song she\u2019s teased from the eagerly awaited album she\u2019s dropping this week, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love<\/em>. It\u2019s a first-time feature for her, but equally unusual for him. Smith was already at Primavera to play \u2014 The Cure headlined the festival on Friday, their first show since their 2024 magnum opus Songs of a Lost World<\/em>, one of their best albums ever. Their Primavera set was full of rarities like the ace 1996 single \u201cMint Car,\u201d which they haven\u2019t touched in a decade, along with hits like \u201cPictures of You,\u201d \u201cFascination Street,\u201d \u201cThe Lovecats,\u201d and yes, damn right, \u201cJust Like Heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of the many Robert Smith paradoxes is how he was always the ultimate depressive, sniffly Brit-goth moppet, yet he found his truest believers in the Eighties new wave girls of Southern California. His ballads of rainy English angst went over big in the land of sun and surf. \u201cI remember on the Kiss Me<\/em> tour we were in Los Angeles,\u201d Smith told Rolling Stone in 2004. \u201cAnd there were girls taking their clothes off and lying down in front of the bus to stop us from driving away. And I remember thinking, \u2018This isn\u2019t really what I imagined I would be doing with this band.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Robert always had the most profound respect for this audience, even when it would have been way more fashionable for him to scoff at these fangirls. The Kids in America discovered the Cure with the 1982 synth-pop banger \u201cLet\u2019s Go To Bed,\u201d about a couple staying up all night to argue when really all they need is some chamomile tea and a few hours of sleep. As Smith recalled, \u201cSuddenly \u2018Let\u2019s Go To Bed\u2019 was turning into a big hit, on the West Coast particularly, and we had a young, predominately female, teenage audience. It went from intense, menacing, psychotic goths to people with perfect white teeth. It was a very weird transition, but I enjoyed it. I thought it was really funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSo it makes sense to see him pass the torch to Olivia, who epitomizes the SoCal new wave fangirl. She\u2019s always had a passion for this music, as you can hear in Eighties-style bangers like \u201cSo American,\u201d \u201cDeja Vu,\u201d or \u201cLove Is Embarrassing.\u201d Or \u201cDrop Dead\u201d \u2014 that song would fit right on Blue Sunshine<\/em><\/a>, the absolutely perfect goth makeout album from Smith\u2019s side band the Glove. (Bet \u201cPunish Me With Kisses\u201d was on the jukebox at that bar.) Yet Olivia has crossed the line from fan to collaborator, with \u201cWhat\u2019s Wrong With Me?\u201d It\u2019s quite a vote of confidence, from the teen-angst poet who gave us Seventeen Seconds<\/em> and The Head On The Door<\/em>. But he takes Rodrigo and her music seriously, just as he always took his female audience seriously. He really did show her how to do that trick.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also knows the humor as well as the pain of melancholy sad songs. One of my all-time fave live Cure moments was a couple years ago<\/a> at Madison Square Garden, when they did \u201cLovesong,\u201d which had everyone in the room singing along with the chorus, \u201cI will ALWAYS love youuuu!\u201d<\/em> As soon as it was done, he announced, \u201cThis next one is called, \u2018And Nothing Is Forever.\u2019\u201d Oh, Robert. Never stop.<\/p>\n

\n\tSome of us were hoping he might stick around with Olivia on Saturday to sing \u201cHappier\u201d or \u201cFavorite Crime,\u201d but alas, it was not to be. (So\u2026that Sour<\/em> covers project? Still happening or what? It began auspiciously with David Byrne doing \u201cDrivers License,\u201d then pfffft<\/em>.) The more Olivia songs he sings, the better. These two should keep on singing together\u2014imagine how great it would be to hear, say, a mash-up of \u201cDrop Dead\u201d and \u201cThe Hanging Garden\u201d?\u00a0 (\u201cPressed up in the bathroom line\/Cover my face as the animals cryyyy<\/em>\u201d?) Olivia\u2019s bond with Robert might have already reached \u201cWhy Can\u2019t I Be You?\u201d levels, but more power to her. For most of us who love the Cure, Robert Smith is someone we turn to with our adolescent despair, a confidante and a mentor, and somehow, we believe unto our souls that he understands us. We go to him with our saddest secrets. Seeing him stand side by side with Olivia to sing her<\/em> secrets to the world? It\u2019s goth intuition. Robertrigo forever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
