Europe<\/a> sweltered through a punishing heatwave.<\/p>\nHeat stress \u2013 the name given to the hazardous build-up of body heat caused by soaring temperatures, humidity and other factors \u2013 is one of the most common ways that weather kills people.<\/p>\n
The new study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change on Monday, tracked how heat stress levels surged between the 1970s and 2024.<\/p>\n

Fifty years later, the rate has risen to 22%.<\/p>\n

In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/france\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">France<\/a> a nuclear plant in the south-west near <strong>Toulouse<\/strong> switched off a reactor because cooling water drawn from a nearby river had got too warm, a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In other developments:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In south-east France, <strong>first responders were unable to resuscitate two children, aged two and four<\/strong>, who were found unconscious by their mother in \u200bthe family car outside their home on Monday, a prosecutor in Carpentras said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The deaths followed those of three elderly people<\/strong>, aged between 80 and 95, who died \u2060near Bordeaux over the weekend as a result of health problems caused by the extreme temperatures, an official said.
