{"id":148852,"date":"2026-06-25T04:35:29","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T07:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/lausd-bans-screen-time-before-second-grade\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T04:35:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T07:35:30","slug":"lausd-bans-screen-time-before-second-grade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/lausd-bans-screen-time-before-second-grade\/","title":{"rendered":"LAUSD bans screen time before second grade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>The Los Angeles Unified School District will ban classroom screen time before second grade and has enacted limited use for older students, under a pioneering policy approved Tuesday by the school board that reflects growing backlash from parents and educators who are concerned about an over-reliance on computers and technology in K-12 learning.<\/p>\n<p>Grassroots coalitions have pushed for limits in California and nationwide as parents have become alarmed over how digital activities are replacing hands-on learning and peer interaction. <\/p>\n<div class=\"corrections\" data-with-aside=\"true\">\n<p class=\"revisions-label\">For the record:<\/p>\n<p class=\"revision\"><span class=\"revision-date\">6:51 p.m. June 23, 2026<\/span><span class=\"revision-text\">An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the screen time guidelines for second through fifth grade. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Beginning in August, district guidelines will prohibit in-school screen time from preschool through first grade. It will restrict daily screen time to 20 minutes  \u2014 including homework assignments \u2014 in second and third grade and 30 minutes in fourth and fifth grade beginning in November. Middle school students will be limited to one hour of screen time spread throughout the week in each class, for a total of six hours weekly to account for a variety of class schedules. We think this is going to become a gold standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"expert-guidelines-and-shifting-classroom-tech-use\" class=\"subhead\">Expert guidelines and shifting classroom tech use<\/h2>\n<p>In New York City, city council members have pushed for a moratorium on artificial intelligence as the public school system figures out more \u201crigorous guardrails\u201d for its use in the classroom. States including Alabama and Utah have sought to implement statewide limits on screen time by age level and others have sought to more thoroughly vet educational technology.<\/p>\n<p>Across California, some school districts have limited student access to outside websites such as YouTube and have shifted away from take-home devices.<\/p>\n<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends families prioritize non-digital activities such as play and social interaction for children 5 and under. Experts have linked excessive screen time to language, cognitive and social-emotional delays in young children. The surgeon general\u2019s office issued screen time restrictions in May that recommended limiting children between ages 1.5 and 6 years old to one hour of screen time a day and children between 6 and 18 to two hours of screen time a day.<\/p>\n<p>Still, technology can be helpful to learning if it is used and designed intentionally.<\/p>\n<p>LAUSD\u2019s new policy calls for prioritizing teacher-led instruction over using ed-tech platforms for learning. The district is now turning to face-to-face tutoring, for example, that will be teacher-led.<\/p>\n<p>Computer learning will, in essence, turn somewhat retro with classes using alternative options such as laptop carts or computer lab models. One exception to the daily screen time limits will be periodic online standardized state and district tests, including on i-Ready.<\/p>\n<p>How teachers use technology in the classroom will also change. Schools will have to limit students\u2019 exposure to advertising and commercial promotion and technology use will be limited to educational purposes, meaning that teachers will be encouraged to avoid showing background videos and instead focus on curriculum-aligned media. <\/p>\n<p>Websites such as YouTube, social media and streaming platforms will be blocked for students.<\/p>\n<p>Some families were opposed to the district\u2019s decision to implement strict screen time guidelines, calling for balance so that students with limited access to technology could still learn to use computers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask you, please, to be careful,\u201d said one parent. \u201cSometimes a policy that has the intention of helping maybe has consequences that can harm children, especially for students in low income families.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"next-up-an-ai-moratorium-debate\" class=\"subhead\">Next up: An AI moratorium debate<\/h2>\n<p>Amid discussion of the finalized policy, parents have their sights on a new frontier: artificial intelligence use in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers pushed for the board to implement a moratorium on the use of generative artificial intelligence in the classroom. Currently, students 13 and older are permitted to use the technology, but parents want to stop its use entirely while the district\u2019s AI committee creates new guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot just expect kids not to use AI,\u201d said Katie Pace, whose children attend LAUSD, at the board meeting. \u201cThese devices are like candy, and AI is just giving them their fixes faster. We have to be the adults in the room, the ones that take it away from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Board member Tanya Ortiz Franklin acknowledged parent concerns over Google Gemini, which is enabled on school devices.
