Many workers get none or only a few days, depending on their employer.<\/p>\n<p>In <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/india\/t-18996071\">India<\/a>, paid sick leave is\u00a0often just a few days per year under labor laws. Many short absences are unpaid and rules vary widely by company, sector\u00a0and state.<\/p>\n<p>At home, Germany&#8217;s sick leave system is often criticized by politicians and business leaders as leading to higher absenteeism, which they say hurts productivity and competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s economy is struggling due to rising competition from China, geopolitics and high energy costs, among many issues. Musculoskeletal problems, such as back pain, remain one of the leading reasons for calling in sick.<\/p>\n<p>According to IGES research, which was conducted for health insurer\u00a0DAK-Gesundheit, healthcare workers have the highest rates of sick leave.<\/p>\n<p>Those in data processing and information technology have some of the lowest.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"placeholder-image master_landscape big\"><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"71256657\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/71256657_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"A patient visits a doctor's office in Germany\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/><figcaption class=\"img-caption\">From next year, workers will have to get a sick note in person from their doctor \u2014 not by phone<small class=\"copyright\">Image: Jochen Tack\/imageBROKER\/picture alliance <\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>How does Germany compare with other countries?<\/h2>\n<p>The easiest way to compare is by using data from the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/oecd-organization-for-economic-cooperation-and-development\/t-17437710\">Organization for\u00a0Economic Co-operation and Development<\/a> (OECD).<\/p>\n<p>However, the OECD\u00a0calculates sick leave from 7-day weeks, rather than working days, so it&#8217;s not a direct\u00a0comparison to the IGES data.<\/p>\n<p>According to the OECD data, Germany reached an average of 3.5 weeks, or\u00a024.5 days, last year.
