data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The sentences at the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus are the first against Assad or members of his inner circle since the Assad family\u2019s five decades in power <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/08\/middleeast\/syria-anniversary-bashar-al-assad-fall-intl\">came to an end<\/a> 20 months data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBashar Assad used state agencies to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity,\u201d said Also sentenced to death in the same case was Assad\u2019s maternal cousin Atef Najib, who was convicted of overseeing a crackdown in the southern province of Daraa that led to the uprising and later Amid tight security, Najib stood inside a cage wearing a prisoner\u2019s uniform as the judge read the sentence. Syria\u2019s new rulers have asked Russia to hand the Assads over.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoh9flk001a3b6rodxgj8sb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Najib, who was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury in April 2011, was later detained and is one of the highest-ranking officials to be put on trial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoh9flk001b3b6rr9xpr3p8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Najib is a former Syrian army brigadier general who was head of the Political Security Branch in southern Syria\u2019s Daraa province under Assad in 2011.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoh9flk001c3b6rxi07cjzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During his tenure, more than a dozen teenagers who scrawled anti-government graffiti on a school wall in Daraa were arrested and tortured.
