\n\tJeff Probst<\/a> would be lying if he said he didn\u2019t know Mike White<\/a> being cast<\/a> on the 50th season of Survivor<\/a><\/em> was going to cause such<\/em> a commotion. Still, the host and executive producer admits he \u201cwas a little surprised at how<\/em> much attention\u201d the news drew in when CBS unveiled its slate of returning players.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe thing that\u2019s most interesting about Mike playing for the second time is there is no hiding that he is the biggest writer, director, show creator in the world right now, and he wanted to come back and play Survivor<\/em>,\u201d Probst tells The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cSo I can understand why people had a reaction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHollywood can\u2019t seem to understand why<\/a> White would want to trade in his star-studded life as the writer, director and creator of HBO\u2019s smash hit The White Lotus<\/a><\/em> for a second spin on the remote reality show. (Not to mention, he stepped away to compete on Survivor<\/em> right in the middle of Emmys campaign season<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tProbst knows that \u201csome people are really excited to see him play,\u201d whereas most of his A-list peers \u201ccan\u2019t believe he said yes.\u201d Instead of posing the question, \u201cWhy would you go do it?\u201d the host thinks people \u201cshould be asking, \u2018Why are<\/em> you doing it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m surprised people aren\u2019t asking, \u2018Why is one of the greatest writers in the history of Hollywood so interested in Survivor<\/em>?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cWhat is it that Mike is learning about humans and behavior and situational ethics that he applies to his craft? Because I think that\u2019s part of why he does it \u2014 he\u2019s out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what\u2019s going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play Survivor<\/em>, you can study it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd when you watch White Lotus<\/em>, what are you watching? You\u2019re watching human behavior all day. I think that\u2019s part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don\u2019t understand that, maybe you\u2019re asking the wrong question,\u201d Probst adds.<\/p>\n

\n\tLike his career in the entertainment industry, The White Lotus<\/em> creator had an impressive run on the show\u2019s 37th season that aired in 2018. Entitled David vs. Goliath<\/em>, Mike was labeled the latter (due to his profession), and finished as runner-up a mere three years before White Lotus<\/em> hit TV screens with season one.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd he isn\u2019t the only one making a reality TV<\/a> homecoming on the show, as Survivor<\/em> 50, which airs in the spring of 2026, enlists a cast of former Survivor<\/em> players. (Survivor<\/em> 49 premieres Sept. 24.) White will compete against a few fellow second placers and even two winners \u2014 though his competitors aren\u2019t behind a 66-time Emmy-nominated series<\/a>, making him an obvious outlier that Probst says will be \u201cfun\u201d to watch play out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s really going to be fun is to watch Mike integrate with these people that he knows in his study,\u201d he adds. \u201cHe wanted to come back and step away from his Hollywood career for a moment and play this game that he loves to see how it will go. \u2018Now that everybody is more aware of me now that I\u2019m a little more successful, how will I fare?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt will be interesting to see how the players react to White on Survivor<\/em> 50, because, truthfully speaking, who wouldn\u2019t want to be responsible for his exit from the show? That could surely win a player the whole season. <\/p>\n

\n\tHis Emmy-winning status will either greatly harm or help him, with some fans speculating the latter as he notoriously invites contestants from his season to appear in cameos on White Lotus<\/em>. Forget fabricating the master plan to kick White off the Survivor<\/em> island \u2014 if you form a close enough bond with him, you could land yourself a small role in his show. (Natalie Cole, Carl Boudreaux and Christian Hubicki are some of the Survivor<\/em> alums who had brief White Lotus<\/em> cameos.)<\/p>\n

\n\tProbst doesn\u2019t say if any castaways catered to the writer-director for a cameo in the already renewed season four, but he does assert that he wouldn\u2019t want to appear in the show himself (even when asked if he\u2019d be interested in doing so if the upcoming season was set in Fiji<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo, Mike should never put me on White Lotus<\/em>,\u201d Probst argues, while still admiring the experience he offers Survivor<\/em> alumni.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI really love the cameos and how he uses people. And I think that, too, speaks to Mike as a person,\u201d he notes. \u201cHe\u2019s able to be one of the Hollywood elite, in terms of show creators, but he\u2019s also able to do the show with people who are not from Hollywood, and then invite them into his world and say, \u2018Why don\u2019t you come experience what it\u2019s like to be on the set of White Lotus<\/em> for a day?\u2019 and, \u2018I\u2019m going to put you in the seat.\u2019 That\u2019s incredible confidence and incredible generosity of spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite once said<\/a> \u201cnow that Probst knows I can get to the end [of Survivor<\/em>], I don\u2019t think he wants there to be a chance of that happening again,\u201d so what changed? It appears to be his public campaign<\/a> to return to Survivor<\/em>, combined with the fact that, well, everyone wants to see what The White Lotus<\/em> creator is going to accomplish on his second go-around.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter years of stubbornly turning him down, Probst finally had a change of heart, and he\u2019s \u201cso grateful\u201d White agreed to return for Survivor<\/em> 50.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s arguably the single best storyteller we\u2019ve ever had on Survivor<\/em>,\u201d Probst adds. \u201cMike is one of the most peculiar and loving people I\u2019ve ever met. He\u2019s so authentic. He does exactly what he wants on his terms, and the results clearly speak for themselves. And honestly, I\u2019m grateful to consider him a friend, because I learn from Mike every day. You\u2019re talking [about] one of the best of all time, and the fact that he said yes to Survivor<\/em> still brings a smile on my face.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
