iPhone needs a shakeup. It could get one as soon as September 9, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/26\/tech\/apples-iphone-17-launch-september-9-what-to-expect\">Apple is expected to announce<\/a> an all-new slimmer model of the iPhone, potentially called the \u201ciPhone Air,\u201d alongside the iPhone 17 and new Apple Watch models at its marquee annual event.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey0009356n9olnvcdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That kind of overhaul would be the first dramatic redesign of Apple\u2019s signature product since 2017, when Apple released the iPhone X, the first model without the familiar home button and with Apple\u2019s now-ubiquitous Face ID technology. That shift set the stage for iPhone generations to come.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000a356nntu70jji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the iPhone Air, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-05\/what-apple-is-planning-to-introduce-at-sept-9-awe-dropping-iphone-17-event?srnd=undefined\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg reports<\/a> will be announced at this year\u2019s event, may play a different role. Rather than setting the stage for the iPhone\u2019s future, an iPhone Air could add more variety to the iPhone lineup for customers who want something different, analysts say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000b356ns99gqyal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple needs the help. While iPhone sales have been strong, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/31\/tech\/apple-earnings-iphone-china-ai\">Apple\u2019s most recent earnings report<\/a> indicated in July, consumers are only upgrading when they feel new features are worth it \u2014 and that\u2019s happening less often now, according to market research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000c356n3lt2pyp0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And unlike Android rivals Samsung and Google, which have leaned into artificial intelligence on their smartphone software, Apple Intelligence is expected to take a back seat during Tuesday\u2019s event, even as perceptions continue that the company lags in AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000d356ng10s4woa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple could also set to rest questions of whether tariffs will raise iPhone prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000e356ne3ybdiva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there\u2019s a bigger question looming over all of this: Can Apple\u2019s blockbuster, 18-year-old product still excite consumers?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000f356nc3ua07ld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple did not immediately respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000h356n254z3khc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Google unveiled the Pixel 10 lineup in August, pre-empting Apple\u2019s iPhone announcement, its Gemini assistant was front and center. Rick Osterloh, Google\u2019s senior vice president of platforms and devices, kicked off the launch event with an overview of the company\u2019s vision for Gemini, claiming the digital helper can \u201cunlock so much helpfulness on your phone.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000i356n4homhfbi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the Pixel 10\u2019s hallmark new features is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/20\/tech\/google-pixel-10-ai-features-magic-cue\">a tool called Magic Cue,<\/a> which uses AI to analyze what you\u2019re doing on your phone and suggest the next action.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000j356nxd8od3hw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samsung similarly touted the AI capabilities on the Galaxy S25 \u2014 its flagship phone that competes with the iPhone \u2014 as a major selling point when it unveiled the device in January. The feature would have brought Siri up to speed with more sophisticated AI agents like Google\u2019s Gemini and OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000n356narei4jc4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple said it needed more time to bring the technology up to the company\u2019s \u201chigh quality bar.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000o356neegbxaau@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTaking a step back, we see AI as one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime,\u201d CEO Tim Cook said in his opening remarks during Apple\u2019s July earnings call. \u201cWe are embedding it across our devices and platforms and across the company. We are also significantly growing our investments.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmf7bjaey000p356nofk05mit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, AI isn\u2019t \u201ccompelling users to walk into stores to upgrade,\u201d Nabila Popal, a senior director with the International Data Corporation\u2019s (IDC) data and analytics team, previously told CNN via email.
