Universal Studios<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\tTheir relationship seems to develop in a deeper, perhaps more intimate, way than it does in the stage show.\u00a0Seeing their courtship pan out on stage is one thing, but it\u2019s a gobsmacking, beautifully unexpected moment on screen.<\/p>\n
\n\tChu says he structured it in such a way because \u201cwhat I didn\u2019t want this to do, was just make it about love. This is not about them getting together,\u201d he says emphatically.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThis was about her figuring out who she is and declaring what she wants in her life. And each of the breaks in their brain are not about each other. They\u2019re actually about looking at the world in a different way. And they\u2019re finding each other in the truth. And so for me, it actually goes deeper. The song\u00a0As Long As You\u2019re Mine<\/em>, I think it feels sensual. Not because they\u2019re like, physical, because actually in the [stage] show, they\u2019re much more physical. They\u2019re together already. From the very beginning. She goes, \u2018kiss me fiercely.\u2019 In this movie they\u2019re actually apart. There\u2019s hesitation. They don\u2019t even know what the other\u2019s going to say. So we really wanted that to have, instead of just a song about them together, it\u2019s a song about will they, won\u2019t they, how are they going to find each other?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tAnd then, through the course of the song,\u00a0\u00a0Fiyero looks at the propaganda proclaiming Elphaba as an evil person, who wants to destroy all of Oz\u2019s citizens. \u201cHe looks at her and it\u2019s like, \u2018Wow, you survived all of this and you\u2019re still kind and you are beautiful.\u2019 And he says, \u2018You\u2019re beautiful\u2019\u2026And I think that intimacy, getting them closer in the song actually makes it feel more sensual. Even though they\u2019re not actually physically doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chu says that he had several discussions with about new numbers with composer and lyricist Steven Schwartz.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWell, we knew the pick points of where we needed something, whether it was a scene or a song. And Steven was like, \u2018I know what that song can be.\u2019 And it was\u00a0No Place Like Home<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\u00a0And then Schwartz would text Chu voice messages featuring music played on the piano.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s interesting. Where are you going with that? Okay, what about this? And what about that?\u2019 But I mean, that\u2019s Steven\u2019s genius of knowing what was needed. But we had always identified through the script the areas that I think we needed help on,\u201d Chu shares.<\/p>\n
\n\tAnd creating\u00a0Girl in the Bubbl<\/em>e, a new number for Grande\u2019s Glinda was a similar process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cI want to see her make this decision. I don\u2019t just want to jump to it. I want to see her struggle. I want to be there with her when she wrestles with it. And so he came up with this song\u00a0Girl in the Bubble<\/em>, and then when he came up with the song, it was like, \u2018How do we visualize this?\u2019 If every word is so important, I\u2019m not going to want to look here. And then we were thinking about, okay, well this movie has a lot of reflections and distortions. We have a lot of that kind of symbolism and oh, what if she\u2019s trapped in the image of herself? We never know what\u2019s the reality, what\u2019s not. It was very highly technical and we\u2019re removing walls and putting walls back in real time of going into all these reflections. But it all sort of connected for us there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAriana Grande is Glinda in \u2018Wicked for Good.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUniversal Studios<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\tThe song\u00a0For Good<\/em>, written for the second act of the stage show, was enhanced for the movie, Chu confirms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cWe added a couple of pieces of dialogue at it\u2019s beginning. So she says, \u2018Look at me, not through your eyes, through theirs.\u2019 That\u2019s new. She used to say, \u2018Look at me. I\u2019m limited,\u2019\u201d he tells us, his voice delivering the song\u2019s lilting harmony.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cNow she says, \u2018Look at me,\u2019 and she pauses. We really wanted to refine the song.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThat was written 20 years ago. Now you have Cynthia Erivo playing this part, and we really have to understand why she\u2019s leaving and what would compel her to leave for this sacrifice. And I think them connecting on this, \u2018Hey, it\u2019s not that you, it\u2019s not your fault. It\u2019s this system that\u2019s in place \u2026\u2019 And Cynthia as Elphaba saying, \u2018Good, can\u2019t just be a word, it has to mean something.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAnd that last line is one of the most powerful in the movie, when I heard it, it struck me as something right out of a classic like Casablanca<\/em>. It goes without saying that these\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0pictures will stand the test of time and, well, they\u2019re classics almost from the moment they\u2019re released.<\/p>\n\n\tChu repeats the phrase for me. \u201c\u2018Good can\u2019t just be a word. It has to mean something. It has to change things.\u2019 And I think that Elphaba\u00a0needed to give Glinda a gift of something that when Glinda makes her final speech, that we hear the echo of Elphaba coming through there. And that phrase helped us connect that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tChu and his collaborators couldn\u2019t know what state the world would be in when they embarked on these movies five and a half years ago because the film does, quite uncannily, reflect a sense of what\u2019s going on in the world around us. People, in this case animals, being ill-treated, having their voices taken away, shunned and driven out of Oz.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI know it\u2019s crazy,\u201d says Chu, shaking his head. \u201cWhen we were making it, there was a vibe in the air. We were coming out of COVID lockdown, and there\u2019s a lot of questions about what we\u2019ve been living in,\u201d he reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And so that\u2019s the power of a timeless story. That\u2019s why\u00a0The Wizard of Oz<\/em>\u00a0has lasted for so long. That\u2019s why\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0has lasted for so long. They tap into something that can feel timely at any time. And hopefully, it\u2019s about humanity, the cycles of humanity. And unfortunately, we are in a cycle that mirrors this. And so it\u2019s more important than ever in a weird way, that that\u2019s the power of movies that we can see ourselves\u2026who are we going to be? Who are we going to choose to be and what do we stand for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tWatching\u00a0Wicked: For Good\u00a0<\/em>with an audience, I could feel the movie binding us, as all great films can- and should.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how the audience feels yet, but I know for us, who made it, it bound us together. Not because of the characters or the songs, but because of what it stood for. Because of the moment that we were in, we needed this movie. We needed to make this movie. We needed each other to make this movie and to process it together. It changed all of our lives even before anyone saw one frame of it. So the fact that then the audience did bring it into their lives, it did affect people. It only feels closer to us and now they are a part of our lives. So yeah, I think there\u2019s something about movies and stories that are really important to how we see our own world, and we are inundated with news and bad news and good news, and sometimes a story can take us away and relieve us of this. And the only time we can get clarity of the world is when we tell a fictional story. But it always brings us back home and allows us to process the information more deeply. Come back home and maybe be changed \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tCynthia Erivo is Elphaba in \u2018Wicked for Good.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUniversal Studios<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\tI\u2019m fascinated by how Chu and his team were able to shoot both at the same time. \u201cOne day we\u2019d be shooting in their dorm room at Shiz and the next day we\u2019d be shooting in the Kiamo Ko [castle], which is set years later.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOne day we\u2019d be shooting,\u00a0What\u00a0Is This Feeling?<\/em>\u00a0And then the next day we\u2019d be shooting,\u00a0As Long as You\u2019re Mine<\/em>. It was weird. We were jumping. It was all about, what set was built first and what schedule? It was all about the logistics. It was just a huge long shoot and we had to have everything prepped before we even went in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cWe rehearsed everything. So we kind of knew the feeling. We had our giant board where I mapped out emotionally where we were. So we all sort of knew. And every day before I\u2019d have to check my map where, and I think it shows the technique of these women. These are not just two women who just did a fun musical. They had to be so precise and technical at the highest levels. It\u2019s not just acting, it is singing, it\u2019s moving. And it had to all tie together. So people think they know what these girls are they\u2019re capable of.But in movie two, you really see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tBut, I ask, how were\u00a0Erivo and Grande able to switch and go so much deeper, as they do in\u00a0Wicked: For Good<\/em>, how did they manage to give such deeply moving performances ?<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cBecause that\u2019s the arc of the characters. And so they were already in the arc. They were living these characters. So I don\u2019t know if there was an intentional like, \u2018Hey, this is movie one. So remember movie one\u2026\u2019 We didn\u2019t think of it as two movies. We thought of it as, \u2018Where are we in the story? Has her brain broke yet? Has she made her first? We always looked at when did they ask their first question of this world? When does it go unanswered? When do they break and when do they make their decision to enter this new phase or whatever? So we knew when her bubble popped, when she thought it popped, she pretended it popped and when it would be there. So we would just track that. And then they did a lot of the in-between work to get there. And then every day when we\u2019re shooting it, we would just nudge at it, nudge it, nudge at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat I don\u2019t know,\u201d he exclaims. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know if they could do it, they didn\u2019t know if I could do it. I think we all didn\u2019t know. There\u00a0was no choice. That\u2019s why I think when people see these girls, it is masterful.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThey are great performances. \u201cThey will forever be Elphaba and Glinda for many, many people,\u201d Chu declares.<\/p>\n
\n\tWas there more time to craft and finesse\u00a0Wicked: For Good,<\/em>\u00a0I ask?<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cYes and no. I mean, yes, we did have more time because we cut both together at the same time. My first 12 weeks after shooting, instead of just showing the studio one movie, I showed both,\u201d he says, startling me.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt was really rough. But we got our whole team to just go really hard because I needed to know the bigger arc. I needed to know where we were headed. And then once we showed the studio, which is very scary, I didn\u2019t have to, but I was like, \u2018I\u2019m just going to force myself to do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAhead of the special double screening, he warned studio executives: \u201cYou guys can\u2019t give any notes. I don\u2019t want to hear any notes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThey saw both versions three months after Chu and his collaborators returned to Los Angeles. \u201dThen we were confident enough because it was still on its legs enough. Then I put movie two away and we didn\u2019t look at it for a year,\u201d he reveals.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd then,\u201d the filmmaker tells us, \u201cI didn\u2019t look back at it until January of this year. We did not open it up. And so having that room to focus on movie one and then open it up in January was very revealing because some choices stuck. And some choices we just had changed. The movie had changed or I had changed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cAlso, with\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0out in the world, there was a sense that audiences understood the characters and the narrative better than anticipated, so we could not maybe do so much setup. And so then we re-edited, and then in March we were like, \u2018I need some lines put in.\u2019 Some of those lines in [the song]\u00a0For Good<\/em>. I really wanted to nail it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\tChu gathered up his crew and returned to the UK last March and \u201cwe went back and shot with the girls\u2026Just to shoot some of those new lines\u00a0For Good<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\n\tAlso, they filmed scenes involving the young Glinda. \u201cWe had that scene in the script and I knew we should have kept it, but we didn\u2019t shoot it at the time because we had a lot of other pressures.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tChu notes that he and producer Marc Platt \u201calways said\u2019 if we need it, we\u2019ll go get it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAround that time, Chu approached a celebrated actor to voice the Cowardly Lion\u2019s lines. He sent the star in question a direct message on Instagram. \u201cI was like, \u2018It\u2019s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time. I know you\u2019re busy. I\u2019ll come to you.\u2019 He was like, \u2018Why the fuck not, let\u2019s go!\u2019 And then we went ahead and recorded the lines.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tLaughing, Chu says, \u201cMan, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion\u2019s voice steps foot on it. It\u2019ll be wild.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tWicked<\/em>\u00a0collected ten Oscar nominations and won two \u2013 Best Costume for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales.<\/p>\n\n

But Erivo and Grande opened it up for me and allowed me to\u00a0hear<\/em>\u00a0it for the first time. I reckon that the work by sound wizard Simon Hayes, and his colleagues, Andy Nelson, Jack Dolman, John Marquis and Nancy Nugent Title, helped enormously.<\/p>\n\n\tChu and his artists have breathed life into it. Even more so for\u00a0Wicked: For Good<\/em>.
