From her breakout role on Outer Banks<\/em> to stealing I Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em> with her comedic chops, she\u2019s gone from Netflix ing\u00e9nue to someone more self-possessed. Fresh off Day Drinker<\/em> with Pen\u00e9lope Cruz and Johnny Depp, she\u2019s calling the shots. But first, a catch-up with bestie Lukas Gage<\/a> that\u2019s equal parts chaos, comedy, and codependence.<\/p>\n \u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n FRIDAY 4 PM OCT. 10 , 2025 NYC<\/strong><\/p>\n MADELYN CLINE: Oh, my god.<\/p>\n LUKAS GAGE: I\u2019m doing the DMK face mask in your honor. You\u2019re the one who told me about this.<\/p>\n CLINE: [Laughs] Lukas, I\u2019m fucking dead.<\/p>\n GAGE: My skin is pulsing.<\/p>\n CLINE: It\u2019s going to get so itchy.<\/p>\n GAGE: It\u2019s getting itchy already.<\/p>\n CLINE: It\u2019s really, really bad.<\/p>\n GAGE: I can\u2019t move. Madelyn Cline.<\/p>\n CLINE: Lukas Gage, my love.<\/p>\n GAGE: First question is, what did you do last summer?<\/p>\n CLINE: [Laughs] Not you, unfortunately.<\/p>\n GAGE: That lavender marriage is going down.<\/p>\n CLINE: I love us.<\/p>\n GAGE: Do you remember what you did last summer for real though, besides make this beautiful movie?<\/p>\n CLINE: I was in Barcelona, and we just missed each other.<\/p>\n GAGE: By a week, right? I remember I had the same crew as you on my movie in Barcelona. Every day, the driver would drive by the bingo place, and he would say, \u201cMadelyn Cline loves Barcelona bingo.\u201d<\/p>\n CLINE: That was my stomping grounds. I love bingo. You know what I loved about it?<\/p>\n GAGE: What?<\/p>\n CLINE: Because I don\u2019t speak a lick of Spanish, going to the bingo palace was a fever dream because they would say the numbers really fast, and I didn\u2019t know what they were saying. [Laughs] It was almost a humiliation ritual for me. Then, if you get a line, you say, \u201cL\u00ednea.\u201d I would refuse to leave until I got bingo. I had gotten bingo five times, but I didn\u2019t know because I didn\u2019t speak Spanish.<\/p>\n GAGE: You\u2019re huge in the bingo community in Barcelona, just so you know.<\/p>\n CLINE: I\u2019ve got my bingo wings.<\/p>\n GAGE: Well, I\u2019ve learned a lot from you, Miss Kahn. A lot about not taking things too seriously and only having a certain amount of fucks to give. I wanted to know, was that always in Miss Madeline Kahn, or was that something you had to make a conscious effort to adopt?<\/p>\n CLINE: I put the \u201cKahn\u201d in conscious. You know this about me because you met me\u2014<\/p>\n GAGE: Eight years ago?<\/p>\n CLINE: Almost nine.<\/p>\n GAGE: You were a little shy.<\/p>\n CLINE: I was so shy.<\/p>\n GAGE: What changed? How did you get that to shift?<\/p>\n CLINE: Honestly, just embarrassment.<\/p>\n GAGE: I love that.<\/p>\n CLINE: Also, the older you get, the less you care, and I just stopped caring. I think I learned from you because you\u2019re one of the freest people I know, and that\u2019s how I want to be.<\/p>\n GAGE: We\u2019re like a mirror for each other.<\/p>\n CLINE: You\u2019re my Gemini sister.<\/p>\n GAGE: God, I really fucking am, for life. I know this is about you, but what about me? What was your impression of me on set eight, nine years ago for that movie?<\/p>\n CLINE: I had the biggest crush on you.<\/p>\n GAGE: Are you serious?<\/p>\n CLINE: Yes.<\/p>\n GAGE: I\u2019m such an idiot.<\/p>\n CLINE: I thought you were so funny.<\/p>\n GAGE: Shut up. I thought you were so cool. I thought you were such a serious actor. I remember you had a crying scene, and you had to take 15 minutes and get in the zone. I remember I watched you do a single tear, and I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s a real actress.\u201d<\/p>\n CLINE: Just the one tear?<\/p>\n GAGE: One-Tear Cline.<\/p>\n CLINE: That was before I knew that people put Vicks in their eyes.<\/p>\n GAGE: Before the tear sticks?<\/p>\n CLINE: Yeah.<\/p>\n GAGE: You worked so hard to get to those tears.<\/p>\n CLINE: I had no idea, and then I learned about it, and I was like, whoa.<\/p>\n GAGE: People are like, that\u2019s cheating, but that\u2019s bullshit. When you do it, your body doesn\u2019t know that you\u2019re lying, so then you actually start crying for real.<\/p>\n CLINE: It\u2019s one of those things where the nervous system can\u2019t tell the difference. If I\u2019m dried out, and we\u2019ve been doing take after take after take after take, I\u2019m like, \u201cYou know what? For continuity\u2019s sake\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n GAGE: Give me that tear stick.<\/p>\n CLINE: I\u2019ll put it on my eyeball. [Laughs]<\/p>\n GAGE: Tell me, what is the ugliest quality in a friend or a partner?<\/p>\n CLINE: I would say jealousy, when it\u2019s invasive. Let people live. Let people enjoy things. You\u2019re not the boss of me.<\/p>\n GAGE: Reminds me of somebody.<\/p>\n CLINE: Love don\u2019t pay the bills, honey.<\/p>\n GAGE: [Laughs] If you had to pick a John from a list, would it be John A, John B, or John C?<\/p>\n CLINE: For posterity, I\u2019ll pick John B, but I like John C a lot.<\/p>\n GAGE: John C\u2019s hot. John B or Topper?<\/p>\n CLINE: Maybe I\u2019ll rile people up and say Topper.<\/p>\n GAGE: Fuck yeah.<\/p>\n CLINE: Let\u2019s activate Topper Nation real quick.<\/p>\n GAGE: Conrad or Jeremiah?<\/p>\n CLINE: Conrad. Connie.<\/p>\n GAGE: I\u2019m the only person out there that\u2019s team Jeremiah.<\/p>\n CLINE: You? No, really?<\/p>\n GAGE: I mean, look what Conrad has done.<\/p>\n CLINE: What did he do?<\/p>\n GAGE: He\u2019s done some kind of fucked-up things.<\/p>\n CLINE: They all did fucked-up things. He cheated on her in Cabo.<\/p>\n GAGE: But also Jennifer Lawrence said that she was Team Jeremiah, so now I am.<\/p>\n CLINE: What?! Okay. So Ross or Joey?<\/p>\n GAGE: Joey.<\/p>\n CLINE: I agree.<\/p>\n GAGE: I\u2019m a Phoebe all the way.<\/p>\n CLINE: One hundred percent. Phoebe and Rachel forever.<\/p>\n GAGE: Those were my rapid-fire ones, but I have some philosophical ones I want to run by you.<\/p>\n CLINE: [Laughs] Beam me up, Scotty. You look like you\u2019ve gotten so much Botox in your face because you can\u2019t move it.<\/p>\n GAGE: It\u2019s literally like I fucking got chemicals thrown on my face.<\/p>\n CLINE: I love it.<\/p>\n GAGE: Do you think fame changes people, or do you think it reveals them?<\/p>\n CLINE: I think both. It whittles you down to your core, and it makes it harder to hide.<\/p>\n GAGE: Yeah.<\/p>\n CLINE: I think it holds up a mirror to people, too. I was just talking with Sam [Lansky] about the Johari Window. Have you heard about that?<\/p>\n GAGE: No.<\/p>\n CLINE: Let me look it up. It\u2019s a psychological tool that improves interpersonal understanding by mapping self-knowledge. You have known to others and known to self; known to others, not known to self; not known to others, known to self; not known to others, not known to self. What\u2019s really interesting about fame is that it puts on blast not known to others and not known to self, which is a complete unknown because you\u2019re just being observed all the time. It feels like a social experiment, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n GAGE: I like this. Okay. Experiencing fame and stuff, what do you think is the first thing people misunderstand about you?<\/p>\n CLINE: I get a lot of, \u201cYou\u2019re a lot nicer in person.\u201d<\/p>\n GAGE: You are nice.<\/p>\n CLINE: But people assume I\u2019m not.<\/p>\n GAGE: What comes to mind for me is people don\u2019t know how funny you are.<\/p>\n CLINE: That\u2019s nice. Thank you.<\/p>\n GAGE: That\u2019s why I love I Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em>, because people could see how fucking hilarious you are. You\u2019re one of the funniest friends I have. It\u2019s not fair that you\u2019re this hot and also have this good of a personality.<\/p>\n CLINE: [Laughs] I had to. I was homeschooled.<\/p>\n GAGE: But I feel like most homeschooled people don\u2019t have personalities.<\/p>\n CLINE: I had to, otherwise, I wasn\u2019t going to survive. I was probably going to go like cha-cha real smooth on the 101. [Laughs]<\/p>\n GAGE: Oh my god. Have you ever genuinely thought about quitting the industry or doing something else?<\/p>\n CLINE: Yes.<\/p>\n GAGE: What job did you have this thought on?<\/p>\n CLINE: I can say with my entire chest, every single one I\u2019ve ever done. I\u2019m on set a lot, when I\u2019m swimming with rats or yesterday, we were\u2014oh, I can\u2019t say anything. I\u2019ll just say they put us in the elements. Yesterday I was soggy, and there was a lot of wind, and I was cold.<\/p>\n GAGE: Water scenes are really difficult.<\/p>\n CLINE: And I didn\u2019t even have the worst of it. I was standing there like a wet rat, really uncomfy. I think I have athlete\u2019s foot now. [Laughs] I definitely have an amoeba. I was just like, this is a torture ritual. I\u2019m not complaining. I\u2019m very grateful. On very physical jobs sometimes you have to put yourself through the wringer, and like any job, there\u2019s some days you just don\u2019t want to do it.<\/p>\n GAGE: One hundred percent.<\/p>\n CLINE: Then there\u2019s other jobs where it\u2019s a little bit more of an emotional thing, where you put yourself into some sort of mindset or mental space to be empathetic towards a situation or a character that\u2019s actually really, really difficult to be in. You come home at night, and you\u2019re just restless because you\u2019ve disassociated from yourself for the day, and you need to come back. That\u2019s hard.<\/p>\n GAGE: Look, we\u2019re very lucky and have great jobs. But the physical aspect and the emotional spiral that we can get into when we\u2019re away from home for so long\u2014you and I have been anchors for each other when we\u2019re in the middle of the Mojave Desert on month four, and we\u2019re like, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019m going to get through this.\u201d<\/p>\n CLINE: I\u2019m so grateful because I feel like our friendship is one of the constants of my life that has kept me sane. But let\u2019s face it, neither of us are sane. [Laughs]<\/p>\n GAGE: No, we\u2019re both very unwell people. We are not well women, but I feel like you are my go-to person for a crash out, which is really sweet. I\u2019ve known you for longer than most people in this industry, and to have you as that anchor is nice.<\/p>\n CLINE: I know. It\u2019s so nice to have a safe space for a crash out, because some crash outs are not valid. But the worst is when you look at the time, and you\u2019re in another country, and you\u2019re like, \u201cThere\u2019s no one for me to call right now.\u201d I can say with almost certainty that you will answer the phone, and you\u2019ll probably be in a crash out, too.<\/p>\n GAGE: I feel like we trade off on who\u2019s crashing out, but it\u2019s a lonely existence. That\u2019s a misconception that people don\u2019t get.<\/p>\n CLINE: It can be really lonely. It\u2019s one of the trade-offs for just how lucky we are.<\/p>\n GAGE: What do you want to do after Outer Banks<\/em>? What\u2019s the Madeline Kahn goal? We probably should explain at some point where Madeline Kahn came from?<\/p>\n CLINE: Madeline Kahn comes from our friend Phoebe. Her mother calls me Madeline Kahn, like the actress who is iconic, and it\u2019s just stuck.<\/p>\n GAGE: Madeline Kahn.<\/p>\n CLINE: So I call her Joanna Kahn. Everyone\u2019s last name is Kahn. What do I want to do? I want to go to work, and I want to laugh. I want to work with my friends. I want to work with you. I want to be around the people that help me feel grounded and shoot in places where we feel at home. I want to shoot in New York and I want to produce, so if we want to do a half day, we\u2019ll be like, \u201cSelf-wrap. Everybody enjoy your afternoon.\u201d [Laughs]<\/p>\n GAGE: How was shooting Day Drinker<\/em>, and can you give us a little sneaky secret about it?<\/p>\n CLINE: That was a really emotionally intense one. I actually just heard some really wonderful feedback about it, so that\u2019s exciting.<\/p>\n GAGE: Amazing.<\/p>\n CLINE: It\u2019s a crime thriller, but it also exists in its own world. It\u2019s Pen\u00e9lope and Johnny, and [the director] Marc Webb. The opportunity to be in another situation where I\u2019m watching these legends work and learning from them is absolutely priceless.<\/p>\n GAGE: I\u2019m sure 12-year-old Madeline Kahn would\u2019ve been losing her shit.<\/p>\n CLINE: Oh, yeah. Watching Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em>, being like, \u201cHuh??\u201d<\/p>\n GAGE: Another thing we have in common is that we both love love. What\u2019s your love language?<\/p>\n CLINE: I really need quality time and words of affirmation.<\/p>\n GAGE: Interesting. I wouldn\u2019t expect words of affirmation from you.<\/p>\n CLINE: I need it because I love love, but I get nervous. I know you love me, but do you like me? You know what I mean?<\/p>\n GAGE: I get that.<\/p>\n CLINE: Also, I need communication. Communication makes me feel like, okay, you are still in it like I am. Once I\u2019m in, I\u2019m 100 percent in. I\u2019m a loyal bitch.<\/p>\n GAGE: You\u2019re a very loyal friend, too. You\u2019ve had my back.<\/p>\n CLINE: Through anything. No one can tell me shit about you.<\/p>\n GAGE: You are the biggest Lukas apologist in the world.<\/p>\n CLINE: [Laughs] I really am, and what about it?<\/p>\n GAGE: I love you. What\u2019s your friendship love language?<\/p>\n CLINE: Whoa.<\/p>\n GAGE: Let me answer it. I think it\u2019s gift giving. No, I think it\u2019s acts of service. You are a friend that does things for other people.<\/p>\n CLINE: I one hundred percent agree. People know if I love them, I would literally do anything. Not to be dramatic, but I would stand in front of a train for my friend. Also just the bi-weekly check-ins on FaceTime.<\/p>\n GAGE: Bi-weekly? Bi-daily.<\/p>\n CLINE: Well, for you.
