The globe was left stunned in 1998 when devastating news emerged that Phil Hartman had been murdered at just 49 years old.<\/p>\n

The Saturday Night Live<\/a> comedian, who was also known for lending his voice to various Simpsons<\/a> characters, was gunned down while sleeping by his spouse, Brynn, who subsequently ended her own life shortly after the killing.<\/p>\n

During the tragic incident<\/a>, the couple’s two young children, Sean, then 9, and Birgen, then 6, were sound asleep in their rooms.<\/p>\n

Phil’s wife of 10 years fired three shots at her husband using his. 38 caliber handgun.<\/p>\n

He was struck at point-blank range twice in the head and once in his right side, succumbing immediately to the gunshot wounds, reports the Mirror US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On the night of May 27, 1998, Brynn had spent the evening with her friend, television producer Christine Zander.<\/p>\n

Christine revealed the pair “didn’t talk about any problems” and had even arranged to meet again the following weekend.<\/p>\n

Upon Brynn’s return home, she allegedly became embroiled in an argument with her husband, believed to center around Brynn’s substance abuse issues.<\/p>\n

Steven Small, a close friend of Phil’s, later revealed that the entertainer had made it crystal clear that if she resumed using drugs, he would end their marriage.<\/p>\n

Following their heated exchange, Phil retired to bed, and just before 3 a.m. the following morning, Brynn shot him dead.<\/p>\n

One of the couple’s children, Sean, reportedly told authorities he heard noises resembling “the slamming of a door,” according to a source who spoke with People.<\/p>\n

After the shooting, Brynn contacted her friend Ron Douglas, then drove to his residence, where she confessed to killing her husband – a claim her friend initially refused to believe. The pair made their way back to the Hartman residence, where Ron made the horrifying discovery of Phil’s lifeless body and immediately contacted authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As Ron spoke with police dispatchers, Brynn barricaded herself inside the bedroom containing her husband’s remains.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement personnel reached the Encino, California<\/a> home, and moments later, Brynn ended her own life while positioned on the bed beside Phil’s corpse approximately four hours following her husband’s death.<\/p>\n

The couple’s children were safely removed from the property by officers before further tragedy unfolded.<\/p>\n

The New York<\/a> Times disclosed that Brynn had consumed alcohol, cocaine, and antidepressants on the evening of the murder-suicide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She had battled substance abuse issues previously but had resumed drinking after nearly ten years of sobriety.<\/p>\n

According to the ABC documentary ‘The Last Days of Phil Hartman,’ during the same year he died, Phil reflected in an interview, “I think in my old age, I’ve come to realize just how precious everything is and I try to value the many blessings that have been bestowed upon me.<\/p>\n

“But there’s also this sense of vulnerability if fortune took a turn for the worse, and that you live with the awareness that anything could happen in this world.”<\/p>\n
