In it, she looked back at <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/love-actually-cast-where-are-they-now-6116876\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\"><em>Love Actually<\/em><\/a>, the 2003 holiday ensemble film directed by Richard Curtis. Thompson played Karen, who\u2019s married to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/alan-rickman\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">Alan Rickman<\/a>\u2019s Harry. She\u2019s also the sister of Grant\u2019s David, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/hugh-grant-didnt-want-to-do-love-actually-dance-scene-20th-anniversary-special-clip-exclusive\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">the new British Prime Minister<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIt&#8217;s the ultimate ensemble, isn&#8217;t it?\u201d the Oscar winner said of the movie. \u201cWe did sort of get flung into our pieces, one by one.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Then she remembered the conversation she had with Grant, 65, about it. \u201cI do remember opening it in New York, and I&#8217;d just done <em>Wit<\/em> with <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/celebrity\/mike-nichols-dies\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Mike Nichols<\/a>, which is not a romcom at all, and something very serious, you know, and sad,\u201d she said. Time will tell.\u2019 \u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She admitted, \u201cAnd time has told. It holds up because it&#8217;s so full of Richard&#8217;s deep love for humanity.\u201d Though <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/love-actually-is-20-this-year-is-the-cue-card-scene-is-cute-or-creepy-8391168\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">often debated<\/a>, <em>Love Actually<\/em> has remained for many people a yearly Christmas watch, though Grant has admitted <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/hugh-grant-doesnt-know-why-love-actually-still-popular\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">he doesn\u2019t know why it\u2019s \u201cso popular.\u201d<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Thompson told <em>GQ<\/em> that she \u201cworked it out\u201d and thinks she\u2019s starred in more things with Grant than anyone else. \u201cHe&#8217;s been my brother, my lover, my sort of husband person, somebody I&#8217;ve served as a servant in <em>The Remains of the Day<\/em>,\u201d she said. \u201cWe&#8217;ve done so many things together. . . . And it&#8217;s always been a completely different relationship.\u201d In 1995\u2019s <em>Sense and Sensibility<\/em>, they played lovers. They both also appeared in 2025\u2019s <em>Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy<\/em>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Thompson also opened up about one of her biggest scenes in <em>Love Actually<\/em>: when Karen realizes her husband bought jewelry for another woman and gives her just a Joni Mitchell CD. So, it wasn&#8217;t difficult.\u201d\u00a0 She said they did \u201cfour or five\u201d takes and that Curtis was \u201csniveling in the corner\u201d the whole time, which was \u201cvery funny.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIt was just that thing of that I so understand of people crying and then but not wanting to cry and then having to cover it up,\u201d she said. She added that there\u2019s \u201cno woman that doesn&#8217;t know what that&#8217;s like, especially if they&#8217;ve got kids.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Back in 2022, Thompson admitted she is <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/emma-thompson-doesnt-watch-love-actually-every-christmas\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">not one of the people who rewatches <em>Love Actually<\/em><\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;No, it was 20 years ago,&#8221; she told Jimmy Fallon when he askled about it during an episode of <em>The Tonight Show<\/em>. The host asked if it was fun to look back and reminisce, but she joked, \u201cNot really. No, you&#8217;re just saying, &#8216;I don&#8217;t think I was very well paid for that.
