\n US President Donald Trump<\/a> has once again questioned whether NATO<\/a> allies would \u201cbe there\u201d if the United States \u201cever needed them,\u201d baselessly claiming that the alliance\u2019s troops \u201cstayed a little back\u201d from the front lines in Afghanistan.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019ve always said, \u2018Will they be there, if we ever needed them?\u2019 And that\u2019s really the ultimate test. And I\u2019m not sure of that. I know that we would have been there, or we would be there, but will they be there?\u201d Trump said Thursday in an interview with Fox News in Davos, Switzerland.\n <\/p>\n

\n In the wake of the 9\/11 terrorist attacks, the US became the first and so far only NATO member to invoke Article 5, which states that an attack against one member is an attack against all. For 20 years, NATO allies and other partner countries fought alongside US troops in Afghanistan \u2013 a sacrifice Trump has routinely downplayed.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe\u2019ve never needed them. We have never really asked anything of them. You know, they\u2019ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that. And they did \u2013 they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The president\u2019s comments have rankled US allies in NATO, coming at the end of a week in which he has severely strained the alliance through his repeated threats to seize control of Greenland, an autonomous part of Denmark, another NATO member.\n <\/p>\n

\n While in absolute terms the US lost by far the most troops of any NATO country in Afghanistan, some European countries \u2013 with much smaller populations than the US \u2013 lost almost as many troops in relative terms.\n <\/p>\n

\n Around 3,500 allied troops died in the conflict, of which 2,456 were Americans and 457 were British. Denmark, with a population of around 5 million when the invasion began, lost more than 40 troops.\n <\/p>\n

\n The force dispatched to the southern Helmand province \u2013 a Taliban stronghold and a center of opium production \u2013 initially comprised mostly British and Danish troops, before the US sent reinforcements in 2008. Britain and Denmark suffered most of their casualties in Helmand.\n <\/p>\n

\n On Friday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer sharply criticized Trump\u2019s \u201cinsulting and frankly appalling\u201d comments, and suggested the US president apologize for his remarks.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m not surprised they\u2019ve caused such hurt to the loved ones of those who were killed or injured,\u201d Starmer said. \u201cIf I had misspoken in that way or said those words, I would certainly apologize.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The White House shrugged off Starmer\u2019s criticism and insisted Trump was correct in his sentiments.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cPresident Trump is absolutely right \u2013 the United States of America has done more for NATO than any other country in the alliance has done combined,\u201d Taylor Rogers, a White House spokeswoman, said when asked to respond to Starmer\u2019s comments.\n <\/p>\n

\n Prince Harry, who was twice deployed to Afghanistan, said in a statement provided by his spokesperson that the sacrifices of NATO troops deserve respect.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThose sacrifices deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect, as we all remain united and loyal to the defence of diplomacy and peace,\u201d he said in a statement provided by his spokesperson on Friday.\n <\/p>\n

\n Since the turn of the year, Trump has repeatedly questioned NATO\u2019s willingness to support the US. \u201cI DOUBT NATO WOULD BE THERE FOR US IF WE REALLY NEEDED THEM,\u201d he blasted on Truth Social on January 7. \u201cWe will always be there for NATO, even if they won\u2019t be there for us.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Before Trump\u2019s comments to Fox News, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte<\/a> had pushed back at the president\u2019s previous attempts to diminish the alliance\u2019s willingness to support the US.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere was one thing I heard you say yesterday and today \u2013 you were not absolutely sure that Europeans would come to the rescue of the US if you will be attacked,\u201d Rutte said Wednesday in Davos, sitting next to Trump. \u201cLet me tell you \u2013 they will. And they did in Afghanistan, as you know.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cFor every two Americans who paid the ultimate price, there was one soldier from another NATO country that did not come back to his family,\u201d Rutte said. \u201cThis is important. It pains me if you think it is not.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n British lawmakers across the political spectrum were also outraged by Trump\u2019s comments.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNATO\u2019s Article 5 has only been triggered once. The UK and NATO allies answered the US call. And more than 450 British personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan,\u201d said Defense Secretary John Healey. \u201cThose British troops should be remembered for who they were: heroes who gave their lives in service of our nation.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Emily Thornberry, chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, said Trump\u2019s comments were an \u201cabsolute insult,\u201d while Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, called them \u201cflat-out nonsense,\u201d saying that the allies\u2019 sacrifice \u201cdeserves respect not denigration.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Other members of the Trump administration have also made light of the sacrifices made by NATO allies in Afghanistan. In June, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said his fellow US troops in Afghanistan would joke that the ISAF acronym on their shoulder patches \u2013 which stood for International Security Assistance Force \u2013 actually stood for \u201cI Saw Americans Fighting.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhat ultimately was a lot of flags \u2026 was not a lot of on the ground capability,\u201d Hegseth said, disparaging the efforts of NATO allies.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
