Coastal areas could see wind chills drop below zero into the minus teens through Feb. 8.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>The outbreak is being driven by a weakened polar vortex, allowing frigid air to surge south, according to AccuWeather and NOAA\u2019s Weather Prediction Center. Strong winds \u2014 potentially gusting over 50 mph \u2014 could worsen conditions and lead to isolated tree damage and power outages, particularly across the Appalachians, Mid\u2011Atlantic and interior Northeast.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>Brief bursts of heavy snow, including snow squalls and blowing snow, are also possible Feb. 6-7.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">What is a polar vortex?<\/h2>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/safety\/cold-polar-vortex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polar vortex<\/a>\u00a0is an area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds the North and South poles, according to the National Weather Service. The area always exists near the poles, but it becomes weaker in summer and stronger in winter.<\/p>\n<p>Under normal conditions, the polar vortex will spin around the Arctic, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-the-polar-vortex-can-bring-arctic-blasts-to-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scientific American<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the polar vortex can often expand and send cold air south, often referred to as an arctic blast, a phenomenon that occurs regularly at this time of year. The phenomenon can send chilly temperatures to regions and areas in the south that don&#8217;t usually experience the cold.<\/p>\n<p>The polar vortex isn&#8217;t new, according to the weather service. The term has become more popular, drawing greater attention to the weather phenomenon.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>While it isn&#8217;t new, the Northern Hemisphere could experience more blasts of cold air in the coming years, despite the region warming more than usual, according to a study published by the journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/2752-5295\/ad93f3\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Environmental Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2026\/02\/04\/polar-vortex-february-cold-weather\/88507492007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Keep that winter jacket handy, another polar vortex is coming<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Will Tennessee be impacted by the polar vortex?<\/h2>\n<p>According to National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Husted, Middle Tennessee will experience only a brief blast of colder air. The chill will be most noticeable on Feb. 7, when highs drop into the 30s and 40s.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Warmer temperatures are expected to return on Feb. 8, with highs rebounding into the 50s and climbing into the 60s by Feb. 9, Husted said in an email to The Tennessean.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will not be nearly as cold, so really, we&#8217;re missing out on this cold blast this time,&#8221; added Husted. &#8220;I think we&#8217;ll all be happy about that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">What conditions can Tennessee expect in February?<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/weather\/2026\/02\/04\/what-will-february-nashville-weather-be-like-after-2026-winter-storm\/88493731007\/\">warming period is expected to continue<\/a> through the middle of the month, Husted previously told The Tennessean. There are no major cold outbreaks currently in the forecast, he said, unlike the system that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/weather\/2026\/02\/06\/nashville-winter-storm-major-disaster-declaration-trump\/88507214007\/\">devastated the region in January<\/a>, though conditions are being closely monitored.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Climate Prediction Center\u2019s February temperature outlook, much of Tennessee has a 33% to 50% chance of experiencing below\u2011average temperatures.
