RICHMOND, Va. \u2014 Two people were killed and seven others injured in a shooting early Saturday morning in Richmond\u2019s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, police said. The gunfire was reported around 2:47 a.m. on North 18th Street.<\/p>\n
According to Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, an officer was already in the area and saw \u201ca large commotion.\u201d He said the officer saw what appeared to be a fight in the street with cars speeding away. She responded within seconds and found an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
That woman has been identified by family as 23-year-old Genesis Jones, Crime Insider Jon Burkett reported.<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019s older brother, Zekiah Jones, told CBS 6 the family had come to Shockoe Bottom from Petersburg to celebrate their younger brother\u2019s birthday. <\/p>\n
He said Genesis was simply walking down the street when she was struck by gunfire.<\/p>\n
Zekiah said he initially didn\u2019t think much when he heard the shots because, sadly, \u201cpeople shoot all the time in Shockoe Bottom.\u201d <\/p>\n
Moments later, friends arrived to tell him his sister had been killed.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s more so shocking\u2026 She was so young, 23. She didn\u2019t have a chance to really live life yet,\u201d Zekiah said. \u201cShe\u2019s still a baby\u2026 our baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

We, as the people \u2014 no matter race or gender \u2014 have to come together. The violence has to stop. Not only is my family affected, but there were other victims and families affected. No family should have to feel this, especially during this time of year. They were all in the middle of the street\u2026 in the 0\u2013100 block of North 18th Street.\u201d<\/p>\n He called the incident \u201cfrustrating,\u201d noting it had been a relatively quiet night until the shooting.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re carrying firearms, you can\u2019t engage in a normal fight, because it escalates like it did tonight.
