{"id":93783,"date":"2026-03-11T14:52:35","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/byus-dybantsa-nets-freshman-record-40-in-big-12-tourney-win\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T14:52:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:52:38","slug":"byus-dybantsa-nets-freshman-record-40-in-big-12-tourney-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubirataonline.com.br\/en\/byus-dybantsa-nets-freshman-record-40-in-big-12-tourney-win\/","title":{"rendered":"BYU&#8217;s Dybantsa nets freshman-record 40 in Big 12 tourney win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-meta\"><span class=\"timestamp \">Mar 10, 2026, 10:17 PM ET<\/span><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/252\/byu-cougars\">BYU<\/a> forward <a data-player-guid=\"38a12eab-4c0d-3984-95c6-6bb5a14d90f9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5142718\/aj-dybantsa\">AJ Dybantsa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/150\/duke-blue-devils\">Duke<\/a> standout <a data-player-guid=\"da7388f4-9ebf-3817-b810-a0711c384656\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5041935\/cameron-boozer\">Cameron Boozer<\/a> and fellow freshman <a data-player-guid=\"98c9be44-26fe-32a9-b11d-542800eb8e5b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5041955\/darryn-peterson\">Darryn Peterson<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/team\/_\/id\/2305\/kansas-jayhawks\">Kansas<\/a> have made it clear this college basketball season that they intend to be the first three players selected in the NBA draft this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Dybantsa wants to prove during the postseason that he deserves to be No. 1.<\/p>\n<p>He got off to quite the start Tuesday night, pouring in 40 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists, and willing his No. 10-seeded Cougars to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/recap\/_\/gameId\/401851285\">105-91 victory<\/a> over No. 15 seed Kansas State in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today I was just trying to focus on a win,&#8221; Dybantsa said. &#8220;Whatever it took to just get the win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Dybantsa set the Big 12 tournament scoring record for a freshman, passing the mark <a data-player-guid=\"dc324fde-eee8-98e2-09ac-d31d8ad9909e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/3202\/kevin-durant\">Kevin Durant<\/a> (37) established when Texas played Kansas in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>But the highlights didn&#8217;t stop there. Among them:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 He scored the second-most points in a Big 12 tournament game (Texas Tech&#8217;s Mike Singletary scored 43 in 2009).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 He made 15 field goals, a Big 12 tournament record.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 He became the fourth Division I freshman in the past 30 seasons with 40 points in a conference tournament game.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It was his sixth 35-point game this season, breaking a tie with Oklahoma&#8217;s Trae Young and Kansas State&#8217;s Michael Beasley for most in Big 12 history.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 He scored or assisted on 54 points, the most &#8220;points created&#8221; in a game in Big 12 tournament history.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 And he became the first player with 35 points and five assists in a Big 12 tournament game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What he was doing was impressive because I thought he was scoring every way possible,&#8221; BYU coach Kevin Young said. &#8220;I think it was probably one of his most complete games &#8212; outside of the lob he threw short to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5262601\/khadim-mboup\">Khadim [Mboup]<\/a> at the end. But I thought it was just a full display of his skill set. I think he&#8217;s the most skilled player in college basketball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dybantsa nearly matched his career high of 43 points set in a win over Utah in January.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The main goal is to get to a championship,&#8221; Dybantsa said. &#8220;If I have to score 43, I&#8217;ll try to do that, but I&#8217;m not trying for a record.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He might need to set some records to win a championship.<\/p>\n<p>Some late-season struggles brought on in part by a season-ending knee injury to floor leader <a data-player-guid=\"89c20a68-9086-3fe9-81af-3888275e8e47\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5105462\/richie-saunders\">Richie Saunders<\/a> left the Cougars (22-10) losing out by a tiebreaker for seeding and dropping all the way to 10th for the tournament. And they had that lead only because of a turnover that led to his buzzer-beating dunk; <a data-player-guid=\"37c18106-793b-34e3-ac0a-910848638246\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5060709\/robert-wright-iii\">Robert Wright III<\/a> had an open dunk of his own but waited to give Dybantsa the easy points instead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something we&#8217;ve been really on our guys about all year,&#8221; Young said. &#8220;We have talent, obviously, and we just try to make simple plays and play together, and sometimes that&#8217;s easier said than done. I thought AJ made a lot of unselfish plays as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When BYU needed a basket, though, Dybantsa was fine with being a little bit selfish.<\/p>\n<p>After the Wildcats closed within 64-57, he scored on back-to-back trips down the floor. When <a data-player-guid=\"da67f243-d3a4-327d-973a-bb997e2434a3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/_\/id\/5106266\/taj-manning\">Taj Manning<\/a> hit a 3-pointer to get Kansas State within 68-63, the freshman threw down a dunk for BYU. And when Manning scored moments later, and BYU was clinging to a 73-67 lead, Dybantsa converted an acrobatic three-point play for some breathing room.<\/p>\n<p>The only cloud on the night was the fact that BYU didn&#8217;t pull away from Kansas State until late, and Dybantsa wound up playing all but 3\u00bd minutes.
