Photo by Glenn Russell\/VTDigger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Updated at 4:08 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An attorney who handles discipline for lawyers in Vermont is seeking the \u201cimmediate suspension\u201d of Addison County State\u2019s Attorney Eva Vekos\u2019 law license.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-page filing from Jon Alexander, disciplinary counsel for the Vermont Professional Responsibility Board, cites Vekos\u2019 conviction for drunken driving late last year after police said she drove to a suspicious death scene intoxicated in January 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Vermont Supreme Court, which oversees the discipline of all judicial officers and attorneys, is set to take up the matter at a hearing on March 19.<\/p>\n<p>The filing submitted last week to the Vermont Supreme Court also points to interactions Vekos had with police on the night of her arrest as well as after the incident as reasons for the suspension request.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cState\u2019s Attorney Vekos committed her crime during the course of her law practice and performance of her public duties,\u201d Alexander wrote in the filing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an effort to avoid prosecution for her DUI,\u201d Alexander added, \u201cshe also committed additional and related professional misconduct of abusing her public office, attempting to improperly influence police officers and interfering with the administration of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander wrote in his filing he is seeking the immediate suspension of Vekos\u2019 law license pending disciplinary proceedings before a panel for the Vermont Professional Responsibility Board.<\/p>\n<p>Vekos did not immediately respond to an email Wednesday seeking comment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>David Sleigh, Vekos\u2019 attorney, said Wednesday that he plans to submit a filing opposing the request for the \u201cimmediate\u201d suspension of his client\u2019s law license.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if the court found that a (DUI) conviction violates the conduct rules \u2014 and I think there\u2019s a question about that \u2014 the sanction for such a violation would likely be no more severe than a public reprimand,\u201d Sleigh said.<\/p>\n<p>Vekos <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2025\/12\/16\/addison-county-states-attorney-eva-vekos-receives-deferred-sentence-after-no-contest-plea-in-drunken-driving-charge\/\">pleaded no contest<\/a> in December to a charge of drunken driving and received a six-month deferred sentence. A deferred sentence allows the conviction to be cleared from her record provided she does not commit any violations during that six-month period.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension request comes as Vekos, a Democrat, has <a href=\"http:\/\/scott\/\">faced calls to resign<\/a> from the leaders of the Vermont Democratic and Progressive parties as well as Republican Gov. Phil Scott.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Those calls for Vekos\u2019 resignation came after <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2025\/12\/08\/these-vermont-sexual-assault-survivors-sought-justice-instead-one-victim-said-the-prosecutors-approach-was-like-a-screw-you\/\">a VTDigger story<\/a> in December about ethics complaints brought against Vekos. The complaints stemmed from how crime victims said she treated them.<\/p>\n<p>Vekos has challenged the allegations and has maintained that she has no plans to step down.<\/p>\n<p>Also, last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vermontpublic.org\/local-news\/2026-02-25\/addison-county-states-attorney-eva-vekos-investigation-significant-failures\">Vermont Public reported<\/a> on an internal investigation conducted by a law firm hired by the Vermont Department of State\u2019s Attorneys and Sheriffs that found Vekos had shown \u201csignificant failures\u201d related to ethical and legal responsibilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Vekos\u2019 arrest in 2024, her law license was temporarily suspended, with Alexander claiming that Vekos\u2019 failed to cooperate with his investigation into her paid medical leave that followed the drunken driving charge.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-4    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>The Vermont Supreme Court lifted Vekos\u2019 suspension after roughly three weeks, ruling that she had since come into compliance with the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander\u2019s filing with the Vermont Supreme Court earlier last week seeking the immediate suspension of Vekos\u2019 law license centers primarily on the drunken driving case. It does not include any information regarding any allegations of misconduct included in the report conducted by the law firm hired by the state Department of State\u2019s Attorneys and Sheriffs.<\/p>\n<p>The timing regarding Alexander\u2019s petition is not clear. Many of the allegations raised in it relate to Vekos\u2019 DUI arrest more than two years ago and her eventual conviction about three months ago. Alexander did not respond to a phone message Wednesday seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>Vekos was <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2024\/02\/07\/cant-you-just-have-a-friend-come-and-get-me-prosecutor-asked-trooper-during-dui-probe-documents-reveal\/\">arrested<\/a> on the night of Jan. 25, 2024, on the drunken driving charge after she drove to the scene of a suspicious death investigation in Bridport and troopers claimed she was intoxicated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-5    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Vekos refused to do field sobriety tests or take a breath test at the state police barracks in New Haven where she was taken for processing, according to charging documents. She told police she had only one gin and tonic earlier in the evening of her drunken driving arrest before being called to the suspicious death scene, according to court records.<\/p>\n<p>Vekos, in the days after her arrest, took part in <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2024\/01\/31\/i-no-longer-feel-safe-around-law-enforcement-prosecutor-says-in-email-a-week-after-her-dui-arrest\/\">an email exchange<\/a> with law enforcement officials in Addison County, in which she said she no longer felt safe around police and mocked their intelligence and grammar abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander wrote in his filing to the Vermont Supreme Court seeking Vekos\u2019 immediate suspension that drunken driving was a \u201cserious crime\u201d that included aggravated factors in the case. Vekos, Alexander wrote, tried to \u201cpersuade\u201d a trooper to \u201cshirk his duty\u201d to investigate her for drunken driving and to let her leave the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Before she was taken to the barracks, Vekos could be heard <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2025\/05\/20\/state-police-release-arrest-recordings-of-addison-county-states-attorney-on-drunken-driving-charge\/\">on video footage<\/a> from the scene telling the trooper, \u201cAre you serious, Ryan?
